Join us as author and former Clerk-Magistrate of the Wrentham District Court, Eddie Doherty, discusses his new book Laughs, Lies & American Justice. About the book: Laughs, Lies & American Justice is a peek into the Massachusetts Court System. Written by retired Clerk-Magistrate of the Wrentham District Court, Eddie Doherty recounts his experience working in the district courts. The book is a compilation of different stories, anecdotes, and encounters told from Doherty’s insider point of view. In Laughs, Lies & American Justice, Doherty brings a sense of humor to the oftentimes stressful court environment and highlights the hardworking, honest people working in our justice system. About the author: Eddie Doherty fished the East End of the Cape Cod Canal so often that other fishermen started calling him East End Eddie. Thus, a nickname became a pen name. Doherty is a graduate of Dominican Academy, Attleboro High School and the University of South Florida. He worked for almost 37 years in the Massachusetts Court system where he became the youngest Assistant Clerk-Magistrate in the state at age 25 for the Attleboro District Court before being appointed 18 years later to the lifetime position of Clerk-Magistrate of the Wrentham District Court by His Excellency, A. Paul Cellucci, Governor of the Commonwealth. He was honored to be chosen as the recipient of the Amicus Curiae Award by the Norfolk County Bar Association, founded in 1797. He heard evidence on everything from speeding to murder, but now in retirement is hearing the sound of his grandchildren giggle and of striped bass breaking the surface of the ocean.  The author has fished the warm currents of the Gulf of Mexico as well as the powerful Atlantic surf pounding the rugged coast of Maine. He has surf cast along the striper coast all the way down to the clear tropical inlets of the Florida Keys. His cousins in Ireland took him from Ballyjamesduff to the River Shannon where he wet a line in the same water that had sustained his ancestors with fish during the potato famine long ago. He has been privileged to have fished Sakonnet with Charley Soares, Chappaquiddick with Janet Messineo and the Cape Cod Canal with State Representative Patrick Kearney. Doherty is the author of SEVEN MILES AFTER SUNDOWN Surfcasting for Striped Bass Along the World-Famous Cape Cod Canal which was announced as the #1 New Release in Fishing on Amazon and was voted as an Award-Winning Finalist in the Sports Category at the 2019 International Book Awards in Los Angeles. He wrote a weekly column for the Falmouth Enterprise and has been published in Cape Cod Magazine, On The Water, The Fisherman Magazine, Cape Cod Times, The Boston Globe, The Sun Chronicle, Cape Cod Life, Coastal Angler Magazine and the Congressional Record. He has been a member of the Canal Sportsman’s Club, fished in the Stan Gibbs Cape Cod Canal Fisherman’s Classic and his striped bass entry won the shore division in his first Buzzards Bay Anglers Club Fall Derby. Doherty does a monthly cable segment on Bourne TV and his weekly video Canal Report for The Fisherman magazine reaches over 60,000. His second book, LAUGHS, LIES & AMERICAN JUSTICE, which was published in August of 2023 and released on Lulu Press, details stories from his years in the court system, police stations, family, politics and more including a chapter on fishing. Doherty has spoken to audiences in many venues including Mohegan Sun, the Rhode Island Convention Center, Bass Pro Shops and the Massachusetts State House. He lives close to the Cape Cod Canal in Mattapoisett with his wife Joanne. It is also a story of hope—hopes for animals that have been rediscovered, hope in the form of newly-discovered animals, and hope that we might hear the warning call and act to preserve the amazing biodiversity of our fragile planet for future generations to come. You’re invited to grab your family and friends and join us as Smithsonian scientists highlight information found in the Smithsonian’s book, Extinctopedia: Discover what we have lost, what is at risk, and how we can preserve the diversity of our fragile planet. In this talk, you will discover: Animals that are no longer with us Endangered animals at risk of extinction Organizations that aim to protect animal life Strategies for preserving biodiversity Extinctopedia provides a fascinating catalog of life on earth and encourages the reader to find ways of preserving the incredible diversity of species, so we may all thrive and life itself can endure on this amazing and beautiful planet. About the Presenters: Brian Gratwicke is a conservation biologist and leads the amphibian conservation programs at the Smithsonian's National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute. Brian’s focus is building capacity to conserve amphibians in Appalachia and Panama, developing outreach and educational programs and exhibits to build public support for amphibian conservation, and research to develop tools to reintroduce amphibians back into the wild. At SCBI, Brian collaborates with Panamanian conservation biologists and zoo partners to build an ex-situ amphibian facility in Panama. The Panama Amphibian Rescue and Conservation Project based at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute in Gamboa maintains and grows captive assurance populations of species most heavily affected by the deadly amphibian chytrid fungus. One major research focus is developing applied solutions for the amphibian chytrid fungus, including research into the area of beneficial skin bacteria and identifying genetic traits associated with resistance to the disease. He also conducts research into emerging diseases and the effects of climate change on Appalachian salamanders. Gratwicke grew up in Zimbabwe and began his conservation work researching the impacts to freshwater fish in Africa. In 2000, he was awarded a Rhodes scholarship that took him to Oxford, where he studied marine fish communities in the British Virgin Islands for his doctorate. After completing his doctorate, Gratwicke moved to Washington, D.C., where he worked as a program administrator and then assistant director of the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation's Save the Tiger Fund. Dr. Gina Della Togna is a researcher and conservationist, currently serving as the Executive Director of the Amphibian Survival Alliance and a Research Associate at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute. Dr. Della Togna earned her Ph.D. in Biological Sciences, with a specialization in Molecular and Cell Biology, from the University of Maryland, USA. Her groundbreaking research focuses on the reproductive biology of amphibians and the development of Assisted Reproductive Technologies for endangered species facing challenges in reproduction. As the co-Chair of the IUCN SSC Amphibian Specialist Group ARTs and Biobanking working group since 2017 and co-author of the Amphibian Conservation Action Plan (ACAP), Dr. Della Togna plays a vital role in advancing conservation efforts for amphibian species worldwide. Additionally, she is part of the IUCN SSC ASG Atelopus Task Force and member of the Atelopus Survival Initiative, co-chairing the Ex Situ Working Group. Dr. Della Togna serves on the Advisory Board of the Mohamed bin Zayed Species Conservation Fund, further showcasing her commitment to species preservation. Her dedication to amphibian conservation extends to her involvement in global, regional, and local initiatives, where she fosters collaborations and spearheads innovative projects to safeguard amphibian populations. History: The Foxboro Short Film Festival is a brain child of two-time Emmy nominee, Jaden Onwuakor, 13. Jaden is a co-host of NESN Clubhouse, appeared in many commercials, movies, TV, including Don’t Look up acted with Oscar Winning Sir. Mark Rylance, Written, Directed by Oscar Winning Adam McKay, with A list stars, worked with Hally Bailey, Liam Nesson, Zendaya for her 2024 movie Challengers as her brother. He has modeled for big brands including Hasbro, Converse, Cannon, and many more since the age of three. Jaden is a proud member of Ahern Middle School NJHS (National Junior Honor Society) member. He was suggested to direct/write his own movie for the Boston 48 hr. film project by her mother Juri Love who had participated in the competition for 5 years, then instead of creating one, he decided to create an opportunity for other filmmakers to showcase their talent. Jaden dreams to be a member of the Coast Guard in the future and prior to his college, he wants to make this Film Festival as an annual event in Foxboro, MA and wants to inherit his legacy as a founder of Foxboro Short Film Festival to next generations and young leaders to come. Mission of the Foxboro Short Film Festival: To create an opportunity for filmmakers for both youths and adults and to showcase their short films under 10 minutes and celebrate their films at our award ceremony in Foxboro, MA.
