We will have a journaling exercise which will be sealed/placed inside. Each artist will receive a piece of rose quartz for their box as a symbol of self-love. We learned so much from Helen the last time she spoke with us, we had to have her back! This time, she'll be discussing her book, "Spymaster: The Man Who Saved MI6". Discover the untold story of Thomas Joseph Kendrick, a senior spymaster who saved lives and shaped history during WWII, blending daring spy networks and daring rescues in Nazi Germany, all while operating in the shadows of MI6 secrecy. This program is at 2pm ET. We will NOT be recording this session. About Spymaster: Thomas Kendrick (1881–1972) was central to the British Secret Service from its beginnings through to the Second World War. Under the guise of “British Passport Officer,” he ran spy networks across Europe, facilitated the escape of Austrian Jews, and later went on to set up the “M Room,” a listening operation which elicited information of the same significance and scope as Bletchley Park. Yet the work of Kendrick, and its full significance, remained largely unknown. Helen Fry draws on extensive original research to tell the story of this remarkable British intelligence officer. Kendrick’s life sheds light on the development of MI6 itself?he was one of the few men to serve Britain across three wars, two of which while working for the British Secret Service. Fry explores the private and public sides of Kendrick, revealing him to be the epitome of the “English gent”?easily able to charm those around him and scrupulously secretive. This is a virtual program via Zoom.  Participants must register in order to get the Zoom link emailed to them beforehand. We all know the ditty "Lizzie Borden took an axe...." but few people know the actual facts! 40 Whacks: The Lizzie Borden Case is a one hour in depth retelling of the famous double homicide. Extensive research utilizing archival materials, period newspapers and period photographs has been done to create an entertaining, fascinating, and informative presentation about America's favorite "Who done it?" The story begins on that fateful day in August 1892 with a striking description of the day’s events leading up to and including the murders of Andrew and Abbie Borden. The police investigation is then recounted, the evidence described and examined. Then the focus will shift to the suspicion placed on Lizzie and her conflicting stories on her whereabouts in the house during the day of the murders. Following will be a summary of the Grand Jury hearings and the trial using actual testimony and newspaper accounts to illuminate the proceedings. In the end different theories on the murders will be set forth and the question of "Who done it?" will be put to the audience for further discussion and conjecture.  The Speaker: Christopher Daley has been captivating audiences across New England for over 30 years with engaging presentations on historical topics. Over the past three years, he has expanded his reach nationally, delivering virtual lectures via Zoom to audiences throughout the United States. His talks have been featured at libraries, historical societies, schools, and various clubs and organizations. Chris holds both a B.A. and an M.A. in Political Science and History from Bridgewater State University. He has held several notable positions in the field of history, including serving as President of the Pembroke Historical Society and Chairman of the Pembroke Historical Commission. Additionally, he worked as a docent and Coordinator of Educational Outreach at the John Alden House Historic Site. After a 25-year career teaching history at the Silver Lake Regional School System in Kingston, Massachusetts, Chris recently retired to focus on his historical endeavors. As a writer, Chris has contributed numerous articles on diverse historical topics to local publications and authored the book Murder and Mayhem in Boston: Historic Crimes in the Hub. His expertise has also been sought for television, including serving as a historical consultant on the Sacco-Vanzetti case for the Travel Channel's Time Traveling with Brian Unger and appearing as a historian in two episodes of Kindred Spirits focusing on the Lizzie Borden case. Chris collaborates with his wife, Cathy, who serves as DaleyHistory's professional photographer and fellow researcher. Feminist philosopher Dr. Lindsey Stewart’s book, The Conjuring of America: Mojos, Mermaids, Medicine, and 400 Years of Black Women’s Magic, tells the stories of Negro Mammies of slavery; the Voodoo Queens and Blues Women of Reconstruction; and the Granny Midwives and textile weavers of the Jim Crow era. These women, in secrecy and subterfuge, courageously and devotedly continued their practices and worship for centuries and passed down their traditions. Conjure informs our lives in ways remarkable and ordinary—from traditional medicines that informed the creation of Vicks VapoRub and the rise of Aunt Jemima’s Pancake Mix, to the original magic of Disney’s The Little Mermaid (2023), and the true origins of the all-American classic blue jean. From the moment enslaved Africans first arrived on these shores, conjure was heavily regulated and even outlawed. Now, Stewart uncovers new contours of American history, sourcing letters from the enslaved, dispatches from the lore of Oshun and other African mystics. The Conjuring of America is a love letter to the real magic Black women used, their herbs, food, textiles, song, and dance, used to sow rebellion, freedom, and hope.
