Boundless: The Art of the Book July 17 – August 24 Gallery Hours: Thursday, 12pm-7pm; Friday-Sunday, 12pm-5pm View the online shop and exhibit HERE This dynamic exhibition explores the rich and ever-evolving world of the book as an art form. Featuring artist books, altered books, and book illustration, Boundless showcases imaginative approaches to storytelling, visual poetry, personal narratives, and inventive book structures. Visitors will encounter works that range from the traditional to the avant-garde—books that hang, twist, stand, open like advent calendars, or defy conventional forms altogether. The exhibition presents an array of techniques including letterpress, etching, monoprint, painting, photography, and mixed media. Through these varied practices, artists interrogate themes of memory, imagination, identity, and the contemporary moment. Boundless features contributions from a distinguished group of artists, including local creatives, university faculty, and artists affiliated with book arts communities throughout New England and beyond, including Boston, Philadelphia, New York, New Hampshire, and Maine. Join us every Wednesday morning in July & August for Bubbles and Books on our seaside lawn. Fairytales do come true at castles by the sea! Doors: 10 am / Stories begin about 10:20 am. Start the morning with a bubble party featuring music, crafts, and a light snack. Around 10:20 am, we’ll gather on the ocean-facing lawn for storytime—bring a cozy blanket for your little one to cuddle up on while we enjoy tales by the sea. This season, our Storybook Authors theme brings special guest readers whenever possible! Some of the wonderful books in our lineup include, but are not limited to: -  The Fisherman’s Cat by Cassie Rita Austin -  A Day in Gloucester by S.D. Kelly - The Seagull and the Sea Captain by Sy Montgomery After storytime, we’ll enjoy more bubbles and end the morning with a scavenger hunt around the grounds. Don’t forget sunscreen, and we encourage little ones to come dressed in their favorite crown, cape, or whatever makes them feel magical! Tickets for this event are $10 for ages 8 to adults, and kids ages 7 and under are only $5. Hammond Castle Museum Member savings apply.  We recommend that you arrive 15 minutes early to allow enough time for the walk from the parking lot down to the museum, then for the check-in process and the walk to the lawn. There are many stairs throughout the campus and inside the Museum. Just to let you know, strollers and oversized baby carriers are not allowed in the Museum. This ticket grants you access to the Bubbles & Books program, which will be held on the ocean-facing lawn. If you wish to tour the Museum after this program, ticket holders may purchase Self-Guided Tour tickets in the Museum Shop at a 20% discount.  Little ones 4 and under enjoy FREE admission to guided and self-guided tours!  Rain or Shine. Thursday, August 21, 2025 10:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. Carlson Education Center, CAM Green 13 Poplar Street, Gloucester, MA CAM Members Free, Non-Members $5 Registration required as space is limited Despite having no formal artistic training, Childe Hassam (1859-1935) was a successful illustrator  early in his life, and soon became instrumental in developing Impressionism in the United States in the late 19th century. He spent some summers in Gloucester, joining several major American painters in the region at the invitation of Frank Duveneck (1848-1919). Join us to learn about Hassam’s work, the art colonies he participated in, and his Impressionist view of Gloucester.  You are invited to join us every Thursday for a unique experience. Led by a CAM docent, these deep dives into a single artwork or object from the Collection will begin with conversation, a short presentation and complimentary coffee at the Carlson?Education Center, followed by a special trip to the James Center to view the object being discussed. Rephrasing Curated by Janice Brand Exhibit Dates: August 21 – September 14  Opening Reception: Thursday, August 21, 4-7 pm Closing Reception: Sunday, September 14, 2-5pm  Gallery Hours: Sunday & Monday, 12-5pm; Thursday – Saturday, 12-7pm Rephrasing, an exhibition curated by Janice Brand, encompasses the mixed-media work of Shira Karman, Tobi Klein, Helen Tory, and Patricia Wellenkamp, who utilize the concepts of adaptation and revision. This show, the fifth for the 2025 season at Cove Gallery, takes into consideration memory, family, story-telling, and definitely redefinition, or rephrasing. Shira Karman focuses on fragments that relate to some other time or place, whether known or unknown. She is interested in how these fragments tell a story that she may know or hope to uncover.  Tobi Klein explores mono-printing, collage, and other mixed-media techniques, taking inspiration from the continual shifting of light, color, and pattern of the granite quarries and the sea. She builds a story, inviting viewers to peel back the layers and look below the surface. Helen Tory uses diverse media to express her connection with birds described in her father’s 1930s nature diaries. A variety of paint, mark-making, torn papers, and string elicit each bird’s particular characteristics. Patricia Wellenkamp uses a series of carved linoleum blocks to print on cotton and other fabrics. She incorporates embroidery, paper, and other elements to add ornamentation and complexity to images that might come from an ancestor’s dress, dahlias in her garden or imagined landscapes.

Hammond Castle Museum’s Spiritualism Tours by Candlelight are an opportunity to explore the history of the Spiritualist movement and the occult side of the Museum’s past and to see one of the North Shore's most iconic historical landmarks in a whole new light. From John Hays Hammond Jr.’s attempts to communicate with supernatural entities using a Faraday Cage to Irene Fenton Hammond’s extensive astrological writings under a mysterious pen name, this 55-minute fully guided specialty tour sets the stage for a fun and informative seasonal experience unlike any other—enhanced by the dramatic, Gothic-inspired architecture of the building and the nighttime atmosphere. Electronic candles will be provided for optional use by visitors for the duration of the Spiritualism Tours by Candlelight. Not recommended for children under 13. LITERARY GLOUCESTER, A WALKING TOUR, began as a project of the Gloucester 400th+ in 2023, and it proved so popular it was picked up by the Gloucester Writers Center in 2024 to keep it going. Now approaching its third year, Phil Storey continues to add rich details to the walks, to be held every second and fourth Saturday morning from May through September 2025, culminating in a Sails & Trails tour on the 27th. Gloucester is known as an endless source of fish tales, but it is also home to a vast literary landscape. T.S. Eliot, often regarded as the most important poet writing in English in the 20th century, summered in Gloucester throughout his childhood. He bought a composition notebook at Proctor Brothers downtown, in which he wrote his early poems, including "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock." Horror writer H.P. Lovecraft set a number of his weird tales in Gloucester such as ?The Shadow Over Innsmouth? featuring the American Legion building on the tour. One of the best-selling American author of the 19th century, Elizabeth Stuart Phelps, summered in Gloucester most of her life. Sadly, she is largely forgotten now, as women artists so often are, but in her time she was so popular she attracted other creatives to the area, including Longfellow, whom she brought to Norman?s Woe, a rocky outcropping which inspired ?The Wreck of the Hesperus.? Judith Sargent Murray, Kipling, Charles Olson, and many others are ready to be re-discovered on a free two-hour walking tour of Gloucester with noted raconteur Phil Storey. Philip Storey is a preeminent historian of the local. A noted raconteur and story-teller, he developed this engaging tour over the course of the Gloucester 400+ and is excited to continue hosting it in partnership with the Gloucester Writers Center.

Saturday, August 23, 2025 11:00 a.m.—5:00 p.m. White-Ellery House, CAM Green 13 Poplar Street, Gloucester, MA  Free and open to the public.  Parking is first come first served.   Visit the White-Ellery House to experience The Resurrection of Judy Rhines, a site-specific drawing installation by Gabrielle Barzaghi (drawings) and Peter Littlefield (dramaturgy). It is comprised of a series of cardboard dioramas and texts that recount a fictional story about Judy Rhines who, in 1796, suddenly disappears after being accused of witchcraft. Some say she died by throwing herself off a Rowan tree. But there have been rumors of sightings of her in the Dogtown Woods.  A radio play, The Beginning of the End (of Judy Rhines) by Peter Littlefield, accompanies the installation. The play is a mystery set in the 1940s. Judy Rhines is a secretary, until one day, losing her job and just about everything else, she learns the ways of a witch. Cast includes Phoebe Potts, Sarah Hickler, Michael McNamara, and Evan Lurie. Recorded and edited by Michael LaMarche. Music by Evan Lurie.  Kathleen Adams will perform her original song, “Judy’s Lament,” with words by Peter Littlefield, at 2pm on Saturdays, August 23 and 30.    Artist Bios: Gabrielle Barzaghi is a visual artist whose work explores the absurdity, tragedy, and beauty of the world. Her imagery is evocative of places just beyond the edge of normal experience and has an often otherworldly sensibility about the nature of time and being. Her work is in public and private collections, including the Cape Ann Museum. She graduated from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, and taught drawing at Suffolk University for over 30 years. Barzaghi is represented by Matthew Swift Gallery. Recently her work was shown in the exhibition Lines of Thought / Contemporary Women Artists Draw at Jane Deering Gallery. Curator Judith Tolnick Champa included Barzaghi’s work in the exhibition Reseeding the City / Ethnobotany in the Urban at the Rhode Island State House. Barzaghi’s recent solo show Fear Game was exhibited at the Matthew Swift Gallery.  She also made a gigantic drawn backdrop for Peter Littlefield’s staging of the play Dogtown Common.  Peter Littlefield is a stage director, playwright, and dramaturg. He recently staged Percy MacKaye’s Dogtown Common at Windhover, co-produced by the Gloucester 400+. The backdrop was created by Gabrielle Barzaghi. He adapted and co-staged James M. Barrie’s Peter Pan for the Fisher Center at Bard with director Christopher Alden and stage designer Marsha Ginsberg. He co-directed Handel’s Partenope with Mr. Alden at the English National Opera, winning the Laurence Olivier Award. His work has appeared at the New York City Opera, Glimmerglass Opera, Spoleto Festival, San Francisco Opera, Theater Basil, Prague National Theater, and other companies in the United States and Europe. He began his career in New York’s downtown. He helped start The Pyramid Club where he staged many original shows. His trilogy of short films, What She Learned from Plants, made with Roy Rallo, screened at the Gloucester Writers Center. He leads a playwrighting workshop there each summer. Around 10:20 am, we’ll gather on the ocean-facing lawn for storytime—bring a cozy blanket for your little one to cuddle up on while we enjoy tales by the sea. This season, our Storybook Authors theme brings special guest readers whenever possible! Some of the wonderful books in our lineup include, but are not limited to: -  The Fisherman’s Cat by Cassie Rita Austin -  A Day in Gloucester by S.D. Kelly - The Seagull and the Sea Captain by Sy Montgomery After storytime, we’ll enjoy more bubbles and end the morning with a scavenger hunt around the grounds. Don’t forget sunscreen, and we encourage little ones to come dressed in their favorite crown, cape, or whatever makes them feel magical! Tickets for this event are $10 for ages 8 to adults, and kids ages 7 and under are only $5. Hammond Castle Museum Member savings apply.  We recommend that you arrive 15 minutes early to allow enough time for the walk from the parking lot down to the museum, then for the check-in process and the walk to the lawn. There are many stairs throughout the campus and inside the Museum. Just to let you know, strollers and oversized baby carriers are not allowed in the Museum. This ticket grants you access to the Bubbles & Books program, which will be held on the ocean-facing lawn. If you wish to tour the Museum after this program, ticket holders may purchase Self-Guided Tour tickets in the Museum Shop at a 20% discount.  Little ones 4 and under enjoy FREE admission to guided and self-guided tours!  Rain or Shine. But visitors to the Cape Ann Museum have often asked, “What exactly is a Schooner?”  This presentation will provide an easy-to-remember definition of a schooner and will show its evolution from a small inshore fishing boat to an extreme racing type. Ship models from the Museum’s collection and photos will illustrate the presentation.     You are invited to join us every Thursday for a unique experience. Led by a CAM docent, these deep dives into a single artwork or object from the Collection will begin with conversation, a short presentation and complimentary coffee at the Carlson?Education Center, followed by a special trip to the James Center to view the object being discussed. Navigating Art & Science Curated by: Cynthia Roth, Marge Rack, and Ronda Faloon August 28 – October 13 | An Invitational show Opening Reception: Sunday, September 14, 4-6pm Gallery Hours: Thursday-Sunday, 12-5pm Navigating Art & Science featuring eight artists who are deeply involved in scientific inquiry and activism. While local scientists search for ways to help ocean species be more resilient to survive the rapidly changing marine environment, these artists, alert to the predicament, are creating art with urgent messages for stewardship and action. The exhibit coincides with a city-wide initiative STAND UP for Art & Science, coordinated by Gloucester Marine Genomics Institute volunteers. While all the work in the exhibition has been created in response to human impact on the environment, in addition, several of the artists have been inspired by expeditions to the Arctic Circle and Greenland and residencies in marine laboratories on Cape Ann and beyond. The seven-week exhibit shows how art can transform the impact and implications of science into something concrete, visible and personal. Related Events The public is invited to celebrate Navigating Art & Science at the Opening Reception on Sunday September 14, 4–6pm. Hammond Castle Museum’s Spiritualism Tours by Candlelight are an opportunity to explore the history of the Spiritualist movement and the occult side of the Museum’s past and to see one of the North Shore's most iconic historical landmarks in a whole new light. From John Hays Hammond Jr.’s attempts to communicate with supernatural entities using a Faraday Cage to Irene Fenton Hammond’s extensive astrological writings under a mysterious pen name, this 55-minute fully guided specialty tour sets the stage for a fun and informative seasonal experience unlike any other—enhanced by the dramatic, Gothic-inspired architecture of the building and the nighttime atmosphere. Electronic candles will be provided for optional use by visitors for the duration of the Spiritualism Tours by Candlelight. Not recommended for children under 13. The Sound of Memory, an evening of choreographic and musical meditations on time, loss, and the fragile beauty and wonder of life. Featuring dances created and performed by former lead dancer with the Paul Taylor Company, Annmaria Mazzini, along with Jennifer Chin, Jennifer Mabus, Brynt Beitman, and Amanda Stevenson. Music created and performed by Paula Jeanine Bennett and Brittani Nearing. Lighting Design by Bridget Welty. Performed at The Windhover Center for the Arts; Thursday, August 28 and Friday, August 29, 7 PM. A brief discussion and question and answer session with the artists will take place immediately following the performance.   Annmaria Mazzini curates an evening of choreographic and musical meditations about the passage of time, caregiving, loss, and moving through life with a sense of awe. Featuring the collective works of a small company of dancers and musicians renowned for their capacity to provoke thought and generate healing, 'The Sound of Memory' explores questions of where in the body memory resides, what haunts us, and what sustains us.
