“In The Mood” for swing music? The most popular and sought after big band of all time returns to Beverly for an evening of swing music at The Cabot! On May 7, The World-Famous Glenn Miller Orchestra will perform their greatest hits, including “In The Mood”, “Chattanooga Choo Choo”, “American Patrol”, “A String Of Pearls”, “Little Brown Jug”, “Pennsylvania 6-5000”, Tuxedo Junction”, and of course their theme song “Moonlight Serenade” as they continue their national tour. The 15 member orchestra, their lead singers, and vocal group will perform their catalog of big band classics just the way they would have over 80 years ago when Glenn Miller stood in front of his band. It is a show that continues to transport audiences back in time and is as nostalgic as it is exciting. Touring continuously since 1956, The Glenn Miller Orchestra is featured in over 200 concerts and dances per year. Each performance includes the timeless classics that made them famous the world over in a show that has moved audiences for generations.

Margaret Fitzhugh Browne: Portraits with Style Join us for a deep dive into the life and work of artist, Margaret Fitzhugh Browne, Emily “Bonnie” Browne, The Artist’s Sister. Known mainly as a portraitist, Browne was commissioned to paint the portraits of such turn-of-the-century luminaries as Henry Ford, John Hayes Hammond Sr., Howard Blackburn and King Alfonso of Spain. Here we find Margaret Fitzhugh Browne turning her attention to a more conventional subject, her sister Bonnie.  Join us Thursdays for a unique experience. Led by a CAM docent, these deep dives into a single artwork or object from the Collection will begin with conversation, a short presentation and complimentary coffee at the Carlson Center, followed by a special trip to the James Center to view the object being discussed. No special knowledge needed! LITERARY GLOUCESTER, A WALKING TOUR, began as a project of the Gloucester 400th+ in 2023, and it proved so popular it was picked up by the Gloucester Writers Center in 2024 to keep it going. Now approaching its third year, Phil Storey continues to add rich details to the walks, to be held every second and fourth Saturday morning from May through September 2025, culminating in a Sails & Trails tour on the 27th. Gloucester is known as an endless source of fish tales, but it is also home to a vast literary landscape. T.S. Eliot, often regarded as the most important poet writing in English in the 20th century, summered in Gloucester throughout his childhood. He bought a composition notebook at Proctor Brothers downtown, in which he wrote his early poems, including "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock." Horror writer H.P. Lovecraft set a number of his weird tales in Gloucester such as ?The Shadow Over Innsmouth? featuring the American Legion building on the tour. One of the best-selling American author of the 19th century, Elizabeth Stuart Phelps, summered in Gloucester most of her life. Sadly, she is largely forgotten now, as women artists so often are, but in her time she was so popular she attracted other creatives to the area, including Longfellow, whom she brought to Norman?s Woe, a rocky outcropping which inspired ?The Wreck of the Hesperus.? Judith Sargent Murray, Kipling, Charles Olson, and many others are ready to be re-discovered on a free two-hour walking tour of Gloucester with noted raconteur Phil Storey. Philip Storey is a preeminent historian of the local. A noted raconteur and story-teller, he developed this engaging tour over the course of the Gloucester 400+ and is excited to continue hosting it in partnership with the Gloucester Writers Center.

Explore the specific sites in the area of Gloucester known as Portuguese Hill depicted by renowned American realist painter Edward Hopper (1882-1967). Hopper is known to have painted in Gloucester on five separate occasions in the first decades of the 20th century. His paintings from this period capture the local landscape and architecture in a loosely rendered, light-filled style and are considered by many to be some of his finest works. Also included are watercolors painted by Josephine Nivison Hopper (1883-1968), Hopper’s wife and artist in her own right, whose work gained recognition long before her future husband’s success. Learn how this hillside neighborhood that the Hoppers travelled together inspired their artwork, as well as the role the area plays in Gloucester history. If you have enjoyed one of our Hopper’s Houses Downtown tours, the Portuguese Hill tour takes you to another side of the city to see different views. It’s well worth the experience! Stroll with a CAM Docent for about 1 1/2 hours towards Portuguese Hill and back to downtown Gloucester. This walking tour includes steep stairs and a length of the hill. Where to Meet? Over the course of her twenty five year touring career, Susan Werner has built a reputation as one of the country’s most compelling live performers. With formidable chops on guitar (she began playing at age 5) and piano (she was a guest on Marian McPartland’s Piano Jazz) along with a graduate degree in voice performance, her shows are a one-woman master class in musicianship. Her songs are noted for their poetry and sharp wit, and also for their astonishing stylistic range. She’s written songs in the style of Gershwin and Cole Porter (I Can’t Be New, 2004), gospel music (The Gospel Truth, 2007), traditional Cuban “son” (An American In Havana, 2016), and New Orleans junk piano (NOLA, 2019). In 2014 she composed the music and lyrics to the musical theater score Bull Durham, The Musical (MGM). Like a maple leaf in a gust above the prairies, opener Taylor Abrahamse blissfully glides beyond the borders of song, gender & genre with his/her deftly crafted, hook-laden hammerclaw pop. A Paul Simon/Prince crossbreed and a Kerrville Newfolk Winner – (s)he’ll leave you laughing, inspired, and singing along… if you can reach that high.
