For over a century, the granite industry played a vital role in Cape Ann’s economy, providing work for men from across New England and around the world, generating profits for those fortunate enough to share in ownership of the region’s many quarries, and contributing to the unique and authentic sense of place that characterizes Cape Ann today. On a broader scale, the industry contributed significantly to building and transportation projects across our nation during a sustained period of growth and expansion. Drawing on the Cape Ann Museum’s extensive holdings of objects and archival materials related to the industry, most of which were gifted to the Cape Ann Museum by historian Barbara Erkkila (1918-2013), Hammers on Stone will explore the history of the granite trade and its impact on the community. The exhibition will examine methods of harvesting, cutting, and finishing stone, as well as how granite was transported from quarry to wharf and further afield. The exhibit will also explore the lives of those involved in quarrying and consider how the industry helped shape Cape Ann’s artistic landscape, inspiring generations of artists to the present day.

Friday, October 31, 2025 10:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Cape Ann Museum Courtyard, Downtown Campus 27 Pleasant St, Gloucester, MA, 01930 $10 for CAM Members, $20 for non-members Registration Required This walking tour provides participants with an architectural overview of Gloucester building styles from the mid-18th to the mid-20th century. On this tour of the area immediately surrounding the Cape Ann Museum’s Downtown Campus, participants will learn about architectural elements and styles that arose out of specific socioeconomic and cultural circumstances during this critical 200-year period in the City’s development. Stroll with a CAM Docent for about 1 1/2 hours as you loop around downtown Gloucester. Please note that some sidewalks on the tour are rugged and uneven and not all fit the width of wheelchairs or walkers. Where to Meet? Though the Downtown Campus is currently closed for renovations until the spring of 2026, the tour will gather at the courtyard attached to the Museum on 27 Pleasant Street. Please note: watercolors, pastels, oils, or acrylics are not permitted on the Museum grounds. A century ago, the name Chaplin was as famous as that of Spielberg, Redford, or Streep. In Hollywood’s early days, he was a comedian, producer, writer, director and composer widely regarded as the greatest comic artist of films—and, according to Encyclopedia Britannica, one of the most important figures ever in motion picture history. On Sunday afternoon, Nov. 2, at 3:30pm a Charlie Chaplin masterpiece, The Gold Rush, will be featured marking the 100th anniversary of this silent-film classic, with live organ accompaniment by maestro Peter Krasinski in the historic 1806 Meetinghouse, home of the Gloucester Unitarian Universalist Church. The Gold Rush is a 1925 American silent film comedy written, produced and directed by Chaplin. It received an Academy Award nomination, and it has since been added to the National Film registry by the Library of Congress for its cultural, historic and aesthetic significance. Silent films aren’t silent at all. Before ‘talkies’ came along the action was augmented by vigorous pianists or skilled organists whose music swelled or swooned to match the action. The Gold Rush will be accompanied by Peter Krasinski, a master of improvised silent movie accompaniment, whose exciting performances delight kids and adults alike. Krasinski will exploit all the tone colors and power of the 1893 Hutchings/Fisk organ, creating music that adds mystery, intrigue and excitement to this notable film. Tickets are available at the door and with more information at www.gloucestermeetinghouse.org. Cost: $20 General, $5 Students, Under 12 free The Gloucester Unitarian Universalist Church is located at 50 Middle Street in Gloucester. Parking is available on the Green in front of the Meetinghouse and at other locations in the Historic District. The side entrance at 10 Church Street offers elevator access. The Gloucester Unitarian Universalist Church started its history as the first Universalist church in America in 1779, a rebellious congregation that played an important role in the quest for religious freedom as enshrined in the First Amendment to the United States Constitution. The architecturally significant building predates lighthouses on Cape Ann and is on the National Register of Historic Places. The Gloucester Meetinghouse Foundation is an independent, secular nonprofit 501(c)(3) corporation dedicated to the historic building’s preservation and its use for and by the Cape Ann community.

But aside from “the greatest hits” in his Dream Song collections, his poems are seldom studied carefully for their intertextual weavings of theme and tone. Are the poems too difficult? Too whacky? Too politically incorrect? This course will dig into Berryman’s work through close reading and class discussion, and attempt to make sense of a difficult, but accessible masterpiece in American poetry. Mike Perrow is the author of Five Sequences for the Country at Night, a poetry collection, and he received an MFA from U-Mass, Amherst. His poems have appeared in The Boston Review, Shenandoah Review, Volt, Harvard Review, The Southern Review, storySouth, Willow Springs Review, and elsewhere. For over a century, the granite industry played a vital role in Cape Ann’s economy, providing work for men from across New England and around the world, generating profits for those fortunate enough to share in ownership of the region’s many quarries, and contributing to the unique and authentic sense of place that characterizes Cape Ann today. On a broader scale, the industry contributed significantly to building and transportation projects across our nation during a sustained period of growth and expansion. Drawing on the Cape Ann Museum’s extensive holdings of objects and archival materials related to the industry, most of which were gifted to the Cape Ann Museum by historian Barbara Erkkila (1918-2013), Hammers on Stone will explore the history of the granite trade and its impact on the community. The exhibition will examine methods of harvesting, cutting, and finishing stone, as well as how granite was transported from quarry to wharf and further afield. The exhibit will also explore the lives of those involved in quarrying and consider how the industry helped shape Cape Ann’s artistic landscape, inspiring generations of artists to the present day.

Begin with conversation, a short presentation, and complimentary coffee at the Carlson Center, then move to the James Center to view the original.  Come learn about Augustus Bühler, a pivotal figure in Gloucester’s rich artistic heritage. Born in New York City to Prussian parents and trained in Boston and Paris, Bühler began summering in Gloucester in 1885 and eventually made it his permanent studio home. His evocative marine paintings, especially those depicting the lives of North Atlantic fishermen, captured both the heroism and quiet dignity of Gloucester’s working waterfront. Best known for his iconic painting Man at the Wheel, which inspired the city’s famed Fisherman’s Memorial, Bühler believed artists were historians of their time—an ethos that shaped his deeply personal portrayals of the sea and its people. The Sawyer Free Library presents Volume One, the first exhibition in its new Monthly Artist Program, featuring Gloucester artists Erin Luman and Laureen Maher Bowie.  On view November 2 through December 29, the show celebrates the creative spirit of the community and the reopening of the Library’s newly renovated Matz Gallery. This vibrant exhibition bridges past and present through color, memory, and place. Twenty-five percent of all sales benefit the Library. The community is invited to the artist reception on Thursday, November 6 from 5:00 to 7:00 pm. Light refreshments will be served. Registration requested at sawyerfreelibrary.org  About the Artists Gloucester-based contemporary artist Erin Luman weaves memory and daily life into evocative scenes that invite viewers to pause and reflect. What began as a fascination with the weathered cottages of Long Beach has evolved into a body of work capturing small, intimate moments—a century-old bathroom sink, beach towels drying in the sun, or glimpses of lived spaces both personal and universal. While her upcoming winter exhibition at Endicott College will spotlight the studios of local makers, Volume One offers a deeply personal collection drawn from the in-between moments that inspire her.  Laureen Maher Bowie, an award-winning local painter and celebrated colorist, captures the beauty and grit of Gloucester in richly layered oils. Her iconic painting, We Dive at Five, depicting local youth jumping off from the Good Harbor Beach footbridge at high tide, will be displayed publicly for the first time at this exhibition. Maher Bowie’s work has been featured in Exhibit Art New England and will appear in the upcoming Rockport Art Association & Museum National Juried Show. Both artists began their creative journeys years ago by exhibiting in the Library’s Monthly Artist Program. Returning now to inaugurate the revitalized Matz Gallery, they reexamine their art through a fresh lens—bridging past and present in this inspiring debut show.

A single poem can be an ecstatic encounter with what Rudolf Otto called the mysterium tremendum. In this five-week seminar we will study sublime examples by Hopkins, Blake, Brigit Pegeen Kelly, and other classic and contemporary poets. Brief in-class writing with prompts and lively open discussion will deepen our own work and aim to bring us closer to that oceanic awe found in poetry alone. Leslie Williams’ most recent of three poetry collections is Matters for You Alone (Slant Books, 2024), just longlisted for the Massachusetts Book Awards. Her work has appeared in Poetry, The Southern Review, Image, Verse Daily, Kenyon Review, America, and elsewhere. Honors include the Bellday Prize and the Poetry Society of America’s Robert Winner Award.

Starting on November 3rd when our tree goes up the names of children in the community will be available to choose to be an elf. Learn how Lane rose from modest beginnings in the pre-Civil War era to worldwide recognition as a marine painter and why, even today, numerous artists journey to Cape Ann to find inspiration in its light and beauty.  Stroll with a CAM Docent for about 1 1/2 hours as you loop around downtown Gloucester. Please note that some sidewalks on the tour are rugged and uneven and not all fit the width of wheelchairs or walkers. Where to Meet? Five, Three or Two-Day Bare Bones Woodcarving Workshops Available! You will learn hand carving techniques, sharpening tools, as well as understanding types pf wood and designing ideas.  We have a lot of fun but this is an intensive workshop to give the beginner enthusiast a solid foundation in woodcarving. No matter what your carving style preference, you need to know these fundamentals of carving technique and you need to know them well. In athletic sports (I consider woodcarving part sport) there is training in body mechanics. The importance of body mechanics is akin to a tennis player who has trained his volley to be "on point" with both efficiency and grace.

For over a century, the granite industry played a vital role in Cape Ann’s economy, providing work for men from across New England and around the world, generating profits for those fortunate enough to share in ownership of the region’s many quarries, and contributing to the unique and authentic sense of place that characterizes Cape Ann today. On a broader scale, the industry contributed significantly to building and transportation projects across our nation during a sustained period of growth and expansion. Drawing on the Cape Ann Museum’s extensive holdings of objects and archival materials related to the industry, most of which were gifted to the Cape Ann Museum by historian Barbara Erkkila (1918-2013), Hammers on Stone will explore the history of the granite trade and its impact on the community. The exhibition will examine methods of harvesting, cutting, and finishing stone, as well as how granite was transported from quarry to wharf and further afield. The exhibit will also explore the lives of those involved in quarrying and consider how the industry helped shape Cape Ann’s artistic landscape, inspiring generations of artists to the present day.

The Cape Ann Artisans are pleased to join the North Shore Arts Association (NSAA) for its Annual Holiday Pop-Up alongside its two final shows of the season.  While NSAA hosts SYNERGY and a New Members Show, seven of the Artisans will display their work to create a festive marketplace for holiday shopping!  Synergy hosts up to 57 artists showcasing a range of artworks, each in their own windows of wall space combining the collaborative nature of group shows with the individuality of solo shows to create an unforgettable exhibition. Alongside these two shows, these Cape Ann Artisans will exhibit their work and invite you to share some festive refreshments to welcome the holiday season!  The exhibiting Artisans include: Jacqueline Ganim-DeFalco, Cape Ann Designs – Sea Glass Jewelry & Hair Accessories John Abisamra, Fine Art Photography Katrina Abbott, Ceramics, printed and knitted goods Sara Wright, Hand Woven and Knit Accessories Beth Williams, Contemporary Art Glass Jewelry and Sculpture Tina Frassica: Quilting Nina Goodick: Functional Pottery The participating artisans are part of the larger group of 14 juried artisans that host the annual Spring and Fall Cape Ann Artisans Open Studios.   The Artisans have been an integral part of the arts seen since their founding 42 years ago.  Over the years, they have often collaborated to host a holiday event under one roof and exhibit their work out of the studio. Registration is required as space is limited. How was butter connected to the quarrying of stone? Learn this and more about the social history and economics of the Cape Ann Granite Industry. Leslie Bartlett is originally from Epsom, NH; he has lived on Cape Ann for nearly 50 years. His fine art photography of granite quarries on Cape Ann was featured in the main gallery of the Cape Ann Museum -October 2007 through January 2008. From Cape Ann he travelled to Barre, VT in 2008 and created a master project based on the lives of the granite sculptors from the 19th century through the 20th century. “Give Me Your Hands – the Legacy of the Barre Stone Sculptors and Their Stone” received a primary featured installation at Michigan State University Law School in 2011. His research on the lives of the stone workers throughout NE forms the basis for his forthcoming title: “BREAK Stone, Water, Heart, the Culture of Cape Ann Granite.” Now in 2025, EKKLESIA—a 9 foot by 30 foot image from a quarry wall in Rockport—has found permanent installation occupying 3 floors at the Sawyer Free Library, titled ‘Cape Ann Quarry Mural Wall.’ Image Credit: Alfred J. The Making of Christmas     with filmmaker Jim Hanon Created by Jim Hanon, "The Making Of Christmas" is a former ad guy's journey to rediscover the humanity of God with us, beyond the God-shaped things or ideas that are often sold to us. Filmed primarily in New England – including Rockport! – over five Christmas seasons, the film highlights local expressions of historical Christmas traditions. Weaving medieval-style animations with contemporary cinematography, the story explores the scriptural references of Jesus before and after his birth, and reflects on what it means for Jesus to be born not only in a manger but also in our hearts. This special Cape Ann Film Festival screening is hosted by writer/director Jim Hanon, who will stay after the show for a Q&A.

Sunday, November 9, 2025 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Babson Boulder Parking Cherry Street, Gloucester, MA 01930 $10 for CAM Members, $20 for non-members  Registration Required On Cape Ann, the name “Dogtown” conjures up many things—vast woodlands and trails; stone walls and cellar holes; tales of witches and widows; an ill-fated bullfighter; pastures, picnics and blueberries; a sea of rocks. Dogtown is all of these things and more. But first, it is a place where proud people once lived and worked, at the center of Gloucester, for nearly 150 years—until it became “Dogtown” and died out.  This tour will take you down the main roads of this early settlement, to meet some of the people, see where they lived and hear their stories. You will learn how Dogtown got its name, why people left, and how it has changed in the 200 years since the last house came down. You will hear about writers and artists who were inspired here, and reservoirs that were built here. Finally, you will see some of the inspirational word-boulders along the trails that are the lasting legacy of entrepreneur and philanthropist Roger Babson (1875-1967), and a symbol of the enduring nature of this special place called Dogtown.  The Historic Dogtown walking tour is almost three miles and will take approximately two hours. The route is over hiking trails that are generally easy, but uneven, with rocks and roots underfoot. The terrain is up and down throughout, over gentle hills. Hiking attire and closed footwear advised; walking poles are useful. Bring water and insect repellent, as they are not supplied. The White-Ellery House, built in 1710 for the Reverend John White, Gloucester’s first settled minister in First Parish, was situated in Gloucester’s Town Green, the center of the community at that time. The house exhibits a certain elegance and refinement while providing for basic needs of its early owners.
