The St. Peter's Fiesta has long attracted visitors from all over the country. It is an annual celebration in Gloucester, MA taking place on the weekend closest to the Feast Day of St. Peter, June 29. The event is sponsored by the Italian-American fishing community of Gloucester. The St. Peter's Fiesta of recent years provides a varied program certain to be of interest to all. The entire Italian-American section of Gloucester is decorated with flags, bunting, colored lights and streamers. Some fifty archways are erected over the streets, their colored lights presenting an awe-inspiring sight when viewed at night. An enormous altar and double bandstand several stories high form the focal point of the decorations. The life-sized statue of St. Peter is centered on this altar, lavishly decorated with hundreds of flowers. From the bandstand two concert bands alternate in entertaining every evening of the Fiesta. Sunday morning is the annual open air Mass at the Alter at St. Peter's Square. Hundreds of people gather to take part in this religious ceremony. Following the mass is a procession composed of several bands and floats, hundreds of men and women participants, and the statue of St. Peter carried on the shoulders of eight fishermen. Later in the afternoon the crowds witness the blessing of the Italian-American fishing fleet. The fleet of almost one hundred fishing vessels, all gaily decorated with signal flags, presents a most impressive panorama. After the Bishop blesses the fleet, the vessels' fog horns are blown. These blasts can be heard all over Cape Ann. Various sporting events are held each afternoon during the procession. The Greasy Pole is a contest where brave soles run across a grease covered pole trying to capture a flag. The other event is the Seine Boat Races. Here, twelve man crews prove strength and stamina by rowing against each other in old seine boats in a grueling mile long race.     Seine boat races  Seine Boat Racing is the highlight of the Fiesta sporting activities, dating back to the first city-wide celebration ever held in Gloucester. It is a true test of strength, endurance and team work. Three boats, the Nina, Pinta and Santa Maria are manned by twelve member crews. Starting at Pavilion Beach, each boat must row out a half mile, turn around a flag and then row back. The first to hit the beach is declared the winner. Saturday is the elimination race. The top two finishers get to face the defending champs on Sunday. There are also women and junior races. Each crew is made up of ten rowers, a helmsman and a coxswain. Each job is equally important. A small lapse in concentration can mean the difference between first and third place. The rowers provide the strength that propels the boat. Each stroke must be long and smooth. Rowers must be able to endure the grueling mile course without tiring. The helmsman's responsibility is to steer the mighty craft. Many times a crew was the first to the turning point but the helmsman could not negotiate the turn properly. Valuable seconds were lost and so was the race. The coxswain's job is to make sure all the rowers stay in sync. If even one rower is out of sync then the boat is not moving at optimum speed and which be costly. The seine boat was a common method used long ago by the fisherman to haul in fish that were captured in their floating nets. The fish and seine boat were then loaded onto a larger vessel and when the boat reached it capacity, it headed for port. Since most of Gloucester's fishing fleet stayed in port during the Fiesta, the seine boats were available for competitive racing. large enough to hold most of the crew of a fishing boat, the seine boats were used to settle race challenges issued between boat crews, each boasting the best and the strongest men in the fleet.   Greasy pole     The Greasy Pole is a most unique contest indeed. It takes place 200 feet off Pavilion Beach. A forty-five foot telephone pole is attached to a platform and extends out over the water. A red flag is nailed to a stick at the end of the pole which is then heavily greased. Then, one by one contestants take their turn trying to tear off the makeshift flag pole before slipping and and falling into the water. Some contestants sprint out like racehorses hoping momentum will carry them to the end of the pole. Others take a very slow approach, one step at a time, always trying to maintain their balance. It is not uncommon for these daring individuals to come away with scrapes, bruises or even broken ribs. The first round is considered the courtesy round. Nobody is allowed to capture the flag. This allows all contestants to participate in the event. Once the first round is complete the contest officially begins and each individual gets his chance to walk. The event usually takes two to four rounds for someone to win but sometimes it can go as long as six or seven rounds. Once a contestant captures the flag he then swims to the beach with all the other contestants. He is then lifted onto to the shoulders of his fellow walkers and paraded around the town. The Greasy Pole contest takes place on Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Pavilion Beach immediately following the Seine boat races. The Friday and Saturday contest are for those lucky enough to get their names on the select list of walkers. The Sunday walk is composed of only of the previous day's winner, past champions and protégés who walk for former champions.

Windhover Performing Arts Center, Rockport, MA welcomes the New Hampshire-based Saving Grace Dance Ensemble, led by Artistic Director Robyn Movsessian, to its outdoor stage this June.  This inspiring and collaborative evening of dance will feature: Douglas Davis Ballet (NH), Solo artists Michael Dascomb (NH) Emily Lutts (ME) and Maille Zelko (NH), Miss Kelsey’s Dance Studio (NH), Maine Dance Company (ME), NSquared Dance Company (NH/NYC), Russian Ballet Academy (NH), Safe Haven Ballet (NH), Speaking in Taps (Greater New England), Saving Grace Dance Ensemble will present several new works at Windhover. “Redeemer” is a modern duet by guest choreographer Steve Rooks of The Martha Graham Dance Company, and Artistic Director Robyn Movsessian will showcase three new works. Included in the program will be Saving Grace’s contemporary ballet “Jubi”, short for jubilee; the art of celebration! This vibrant and joyous ballet explodes with bright blue leotards and hot pink sparkling tutus to the music of Michael Torke.  On a more somber note, this program also includes a special tribute to Movsessian’s nephew who died of fentanyl poisoning in 2023. “Going Dark” devotes movement to music by Johann Johansson and Rachmaninoff’s “Vespers” to tell the story of a mother and her son, the pain of loss and the peace of ethereal resolve. This walking tour provides participants with an architectural overview of Gloucester building styles from the mid-18th to the mid-20th century. On this tour of the area immediately surrounding the Cape Ann Museum’s Downtown Campus, participants will learn about architectural elements and styles that arose out of specific socioeconomic and cultural circumstances during this critical 200-year period in the City’s development. The Manchester-Essex Rotary Club's annual Red White & Blue Breakfast is on June 28th, 2025, at Tuck's Point starting from 7:30 am to 11:30 am.  There will be pancakes with all the fixings, eggs, bacon, coffee, pony rides & face painting for the kids, plus musical entertainment! A 50/50 Raffle to benefit the Manchester-Essex Rotary Club Scholarship fund will be drawn at 11:30 am. The Rockport Garden Club presents our annual Rockport in Bloom Garden Tour on Saturday, June 28th, 2025, 10 AM-4 PM (rain or shine.) Twelve south of downtown NEIGHBORHOOD GEMS gardens will be highlighted with the majority of the gardens within walking distance from the Rockport Public Schools on Jerdens Lane.  All the gardens offer free curbside parking. Free parking is also available to tour visitors in the parking lot of the  Performing Arts Building at the school complex. Included on this tour is a unique collaboration among four gardens that share a common stream and backyard space. As in previous years, we happily welcome Artists in the Gardens with an Artist Reception (4:00 PM- 6:00 PM), location to be determined. We are delighted this year to collaborate with Heath's Tea Room  located at 43 South St. for two luncheon seatings.   Information regarding purchasing tickets for the tour and ordering lunch will be available in April on the garden club website (https://rockportgardenclub.org/garden-tour)

LITERARY GLOUCESTER, A WALKING TOUR, began as a project of the Gloucester 400th+ in 2023, and it proved so popular it was picked up by the Gloucester Writers Center in 2024 to keep it going. Now approaching its third year, Phil Storey continues to add rich details to the walks, to be held every second and fourth Saturday morning from May through September 2025, culminating in a Sails & Trails tour on the 27th. Gloucester is known as an endless source of fish tales, but it is also home to a vast literary landscape. T.S. Eliot, often regarded as the most important poet writing in English in the 20th century, summered in Gloucester throughout his childhood. He bought a composition notebook at Proctor Brothers downtown, in which he wrote his early poems, including "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock." Horror writer H.P. Lovecraft set a number of his weird tales in Gloucester such as ?The Shadow Over Innsmouth? featuring the American Legion building on the tour. One of the best-selling American author of the 19th century, Elizabeth Stuart Phelps, summered in Gloucester most of her life. Sadly, she is largely forgotten now, as women artists so often are, but in her time she was so popular she attracted other creatives to the area, including Longfellow, whom she brought to Norman?s Woe, a rocky outcropping which inspired ?The Wreck of the Hesperus.? Judith Sargent Murray, Kipling, Charles Olson, and many others are ready to be re-discovered on a free two-hour walking tour of Gloucester with noted raconteur Phil Storey. Philip Storey is a preeminent historian of the local. A noted raconteur and story-teller, he developed this engaging tour over the course of the Gloucester 400+ and is excited to continue hosting it in partnership with the Gloucester Writers Center.

Explore the specific sites in the area of Gloucester known as Portuguese Hill depicted by renowned American realist painter Edward Hopper (1882-1967). Hopper is known to have painted in Gloucester on five separate occasions in the first decades of the 20th century. His paintings from this period capture the local landscape and architecture in a loosely rendered, light-filled style and are considered by many to be some of his finest works. Also included are watercolors painted by Josephine Nivison Hopper (1883-1968), Hopper’s wife and artist in her own right, whose work gained recognition long before her future husband’s success. Learn how this hillside neighborhood that the Hoppers travelled together inspired their artwork, as well as the role the area plays in Gloucester history. If you have enjoyed one of our Hopper’s Houses Downtown tours, the Portuguese Hill tour takes you to another side of the city to see different views. It’s well worth the experience! Sunday, June 29, 2025 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Babson Boulder Parking Cherry Street, Gloucester, MA 01930 $10 for CAM Members, $20 for non-members  Registration Required On Cape Ann, the name “Dogtown” conjures up many things — vast woodlands and trails; stone walls and cellar holes; tales of witches and widows; an ill-fated bullfighter; pastures, picnics and blueberries; a sea of rocks. Dogtown is all of these things and more. But first, it is a place where proud people once lived and worked, at the center of Gloucester, for nearly 150 years – until it became “Dogtown” and died out.  This tour will take you down the main roads of this early settlement, to meet some of the people, see where they lived and hear their stories. You will learn how Dogtown got its name, why people left, and how it has changed in the 200 years since the last house came down. You will hear about writers and artists who were inspired here, and reservoirs that were built here. Finally, you will see some of the inspirational word-boulders along the trails that are the lasting legacy of entrepreneur and philanthropist Roger Babson (1875-1967), and a symbol of the enduring nature of this special place called Dogtown.  This walking tour is three miles and will take approximately two hours. The route is over hiking trails that are generally easy, but uneven, with rocks and roots underfoot. Hiking attire and footwear advised; also, walking poles if you use them. Bring water and insect repellent. The tour will start at the main entrance to Dogtown, off Cherry Street. Meet at the parking lot a short distance up Dogtown Road, on the right. There is parking for a few cars in the lot; otherwise, park along the right side of the road, after the parking lot, or along Cherry St. Please arrive 10 minutes early. Overview Manchester’s annual salute to America is a wonderful tradition, complete with stirring music, precision marching bands, imaginative home made floats, antique cars, and just about everything else that represents the pride and patriotism we all share for our country. Simply stated, Manchester’s Fourth of July Celebration is small town America at its very best!

2025 Parade Details The parade will be held on Friday, July 4, 2025 at 10 AM, rain or shine. The Manchester Police Department will close roads on a rolling basis so plan ahead. Temporary parking restrictions will apply along the parade route.

Rockport, Massachusetts, is known for its spirited Independence Day celebrations, and this Fourth of July will be no exception. The day is packed with exciting events, including the Firemen's Parade, a Legion Band concert, and Rockport's unique grand finale - a spectacular bonfire at Back Beach. Event Schedule Rockport Firemen's Parade: 6 pm Legion Band Concert: Approximately 8 pm Bonfire Lighting: Around 9 pm Parade Route The parade kicks off at 6 pm, starting from the school complex on Jerden's Lane. The route continues down South Street to Dock Square, proceeds up Main Street to Beach Street, and concludes at the American Legion bandstand near Back Beach. Bonfire Following the parade, enjoy the Legion Band concert at around 8 pm. As dusk falls, typically around 9 pm, the traditional bonfire made from stacked wooden pallets will be ignited at Back Beach, providing a thrilling end to the festivities. Join us for a day filled with celebration, music, and community spirit, organized by the Rockport Firemen's Association.
