As we close out 2025, Discover Gloucester is planning The Tourism & Business Summit, a reimagined gathering designed to bring Gloucester’s tourism and business community together for a morning of insight, collaboration, and connection.   This dynamic event brings Gloucester’s tourism, business, and creative community together to explore economic impact, tourism trends, and visitor spending, while creating space for meaningful conversation across sectors. We are pleased to welcome Mayor Paul Lundberg, who will kick off the morning following breakfast. You’ll hear from Nancy Gardella, Executive Director of the North of Boston Convention and Visitors Bureau, who will share updated data from the Massachusetts Office for Travel and Tourism, including refined visitor spending insights. Sam Bevins, CEO of the Greater Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce, will also present key findings on lodging tax data, CATA usage, and beach parking revenue.   Industry Roundtables – Your Voice Matters A key part of this year’s Summit happens before we gather in February. Discover Gloucester will be hosting Industry Roundtables throughout January to hear directly from our tourism and business community about challenges, opportunities, and priorities for the year ahead. To stay up to date on the latest Summit news, RSVP for roundtables, and help us with planning, we encourage you to complete the Google Form linked below. If you’re unable to attend a roundtable, we still want to hear from you and would be happy to schedule a phone call or meeting to gather your feedback.  Breakout Sessions Tailored to You The Summit will also feature breakout sessions focused on timely, relevant topics with practical takeaways you can apply to your business or organization. Crys Matthews, a bright star of the new generation of social justice music-makers, will appear at the Old Sloop Presents performing arts series Friday, February 6. Aquinnah Wampanoag tribe member Thea Hopkins will open the show. Hailed as “the next Woody Guthrie,” Nashville resident Crys Matthews is a powerful lyricist whose songs of compassionate dissent reflect her lived experience as what she lightheartedly calls “the poster child for intersectionality,” Justin Hiltner of Bluegrass Situation called Matthews’s gift “a reminder of what beauty can occur when we bridge those divides.” Matthews hopes to take her place alongside some of her heroes in the world of social-justice music like Sweet Honey in the Rock and Holly Near. ASCAP VP & Creative Director Eric Philbrook says, “By wrapping honest emotions around her socially conscious messages and dynamically delivering them with a warm heart and a strong voice, she lifts our spirits just when we need it most in these troubled times.” Performing songwriter Thea Hopkins calls her music “Red Roots Americana”. She has been described as a “standout writer” by the Washington Post. The New York Stage and Film Fund selected Hopkins as a 2025 and 2024, “Indigenous Voices of The Northeast” artist resident in support of her play, “An American Ghost Dance”. October 2024 saw Thea at WOMEX Manchester (UK), as a Western Arts Alliance US artist delegate. In Spring 2024, she was selected to attend the First Nations gathering and the ISPA Congress in Perth, Australia as a Western Arts Alliance artist delegate.

This presentation by John D. Clemson is based on research and field observation of the historic School Street Neighborhood during 2024-2025, funded by the Town of Manchester with a matching Survey and Planning Grant from the MA Historical Commission. The survey used MA Historical Commission methodology to record and document 113 buildings and other cultural resources within the neighborhood. Discussion will include selected buildings that were recorded for this project, including their architecture, histories and historic context within the broader history of Manchester and the North Shore region of Boston. John has over 30 years of experience in historic preservation, researching and documenting historic buildings and their social history since earning an M.A. from Boston University’s Preservation Studies Program in 1991. Light refreshments begin at 6, presentation begins 6:30.
