Our Aerial Lyra (Hoop) and Trapeze classes are designed to help you build strength, confidence, and body awareness while exploring the art of aerial movement. Perfect for beginners, you'll learn essential techniques, conditioning, graceful entries and exits, foundational shapes, and smooth transitions. As you progress, you'll discover new ways to move, challenge yourself, and unlock what your body can do in the air. WORKSHOP #1 WOODCUT/REDUCTION JUNE 22-26 The first five-day summer workshop will focus on single or multi-color reduction woodcut, your choice. Participants will have the opportunity to develop their own designs, explore cutting techniques, and learn to use and maintain a printing press. There are presently two of the six spots available. We invite participants of all skill levels. The cost is $475 and covers basic materials, including oil-based printing inks, newsprint, an initial supply of paper, and shared studio cutting tools. New cutting tool sets are available for purchase. A $100 deposit will secure your spot, with the remaining balance due at the first class. The St. Peter's Fiesta has long attracted visitors from all over the country. It is an annual celebration in Gloucester, MA taking place on the weekend closest to the Feast Day of St. Peter, June 29. The event is sponsored by the Italian-American fishing community of Gloucester. The St. Peter's Fiesta of recent years provides a varied program certain to be of interest to all. The entire Italian-American section of Gloucester is decorated with flags, bunting, colored lights and streamers. Some fifty archways are erected over the streets, their colored lights presenting an awe-inspiring sight when viewed at night. An enormous altar and double bandstand several stories high form the focal point of the decorations. The life-sized statue of St. Peter is centered on this altar, lavishly decorated with hundreds of flowers. From the bandstand two concert bands alternate in entertaining every evening of the Fiesta. Sunday morning is the annual open air Mass at the Alter at St. Peter's Square. Hundreds of people gather to take part in this religious ceremony. Following the mass is a procession composed of several bands and floats, hundreds of men and women participants, and the statue of St. Peter carried on the shoulders of eight fishermen. Later in the afternoon the crowds witness the blessing of the Italian-American fishing fleet. The fleet of almost one hundred fishing vessels, all gaily decorated with signal flags, presents a most impressive panorama. After the Bishop blesses the fleet, the vessels' fog horns are blown. These blasts can be heard all over Cape Ann. Various sporting events are held each afternoon during the procession. The Greasy Pole is a contest where brave soles run across a grease covered pole trying to capture a flag. The other event is the Seine Boat Races. Here, twelve man crews prove strength and stamina by rowing against each other in old seine boats in a grueling mile long race.     Seine boat races  Seine Boat Racing is the highlight of the Fiesta sporting activities, dating back to the first city-wide celebration ever held in Gloucester. It is a true test of strength, endurance and team work. Three boats, the Nina, Pinta and Santa Maria are manned by twelve member crews. Starting at Pavilion Beach, each boat must row out a half mile, turn around a flag and then row back. The first to hit the beach is declared the winner. Saturday is the elimination race. The top two finishers get to face the defending champs on Sunday. There are also women and junior races. Each crew is made up of ten rowers, a helmsman and a coxswain. Each job is equally important. A small lapse in concentration can mean the difference between first and third place. The rowers provide the strength that propels the boat. Each stroke must be long and smooth. Rowers must be able to endure the grueling mile course without tiring. The helmsman's responsibility is to steer the mighty craft. Many times a crew was the first to the turning point but the helmsman could not negotiate the turn properly. Valuable seconds were lost and so was the race. The coxswain's job is to make sure all the rowers stay in sync. If even one rower is out of sync then the boat is not moving at optimum speed and which be costly. The seine boat was a common method used long ago by the fisherman to haul in fish that were captured in their floating nets. The fish and seine boat were then loaded onto a larger vessel and when the boat reached it capacity, it headed for port. Since most of Gloucester's fishing fleet stayed in port during the Fiesta, the seine boats were available for competitive racing. large enough to hold most of the crew of a fishing boat, the seine boats were used to settle race challenges issued between boat crews, each boasting the best and the strongest men in the fleet.   Greasy pole     The Greasy Pole is a most unique contest indeed. It takes place 200 feet off Pavilion Beach. A forty-five foot telephone pole is attached to a platform and extends out over the water. A red flag is nailed to a stick at the end of the pole which is then heavily greased. Then, one by one contestants take their turn trying to tear off the makeshift flag pole before slipping and and falling into the water. Some contestants sprint out like racehorses hoping momentum will carry them to the end of the pole. Others take a very slow approach, one step at a time, always trying to maintain their balance. It is not uncommon for these daring individuals to come away with scrapes, bruises or even broken ribs. The first round is considered the courtesy round. Nobody is allowed to capture the flag. This allows all contestants to participate in the event. Once the first round is complete the contest officially begins and each individual gets his chance to walk. The event usually takes two to four rounds for someone to win but sometimes it can go as long as six or seven rounds. Once a contestant captures the flag he then swims to the beach with all the other contestants. He is then lifted onto to the shoulders of his fellow walkers and paraded around the town. The Greasy Pole contest takes place on Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Pavilion Beach immediately following the Seine boat races. The Friday and Saturday contest are for those lucky enough to get their names on the select list of walkers. The Sunday walk is composed of only of the previous day's winner, past champions and protégés who walk for former champions.

We kick off the season on June 24th with a morning flow to welcome the longest days of the year — early summer at its best, right on the water, with one of the most stunning backdrops on the North Shore. Framed by the Atlantic coastline on one side and Hammond Castle towering above on the other, this is one of those classes you remember. All levels welcome. Come as you are. As tensions rise and consequences escalate, we learn that these women have more that connects them than what meets the eye. Bad Books explores the first impressions and raucous debates that divide us while forcing audiences to consider what it really means to care for our children.  Sharyn Rothstein’s poignant drama opens the 2026 Season with cunning humor and heartfelt dialogue in this regional-premiere directed by M. Bevin O’Garaº. Running from June 4 to 27, all performances are at the Natti-Willsky Performance Center – 267 East Main Street, Gloucester. Showtimes are Wednesdays – Saturdays at 7:30pm, with matinees Saturdays & Sunday at 2:00pm.

From stick figure doodlers to first-rate talents, join us for a seaside, Plein Air sketch class with Sue Wheeler of Arts Abound in Magnolia. All skill levels are welcome! The three-class series offers a 30-minute beginner sketch lesson with an hour and a half of independent sketching time. All you need to bring is a sketchbook, pencils, a ruler, and an eraser. Please note: watercolors, pastels, oils, or acrylics are not permitted on the Museum grounds. Attendees who wish to tour the Hammond Castle Museum after any of the classes class are entitled to a 20% discount on a self-guided tour. Tour tickets may be purchased in the Museum Shop before 2:30 pm on the day of this class. Fridays Summer Sketch Series En Plein Air classes: 9:30 am- 11:30 am. June 12, 19 & 26.   These classes are weather-dependent; in the event of inclement weather, this class will be rescheduled with Sue. This series is $75. Registration closes on the morning of the first class. Museum Member savings apply.   About Sue Wheeler: Sue has a lifetime of making art through various mediums from delectable pastries to abstracts in pastels, watercolor, and acrylics. She enjoys using her creative flair in quilting and interior design as well.   Sue graduated from the University of Denver with a Bachelor’s in business with a focus on hospitality management and earned an associate’s degree from the Culinary Institute of America. Following her tenure as a pastry chef in New Hampshire, Sue returned to school for a certificate in graphic design and put her talents to use as a designer in the book publishing and art publishing industries in Vermont. In early 2019, Sue opened her own gallery and studio, Arts Abound in Magnolia Village, MA, as an artistic haven for local artists. Through the gallery, over 30 artists featured their creative works, ranging from paintings, hand-painted silk scarves, silver jewelry, and more. Sue also ran many workshops and classes featuring many of the artists. Often, Sue would work late into the night, painting in her Arts Abound studio. After closing the gallery in 2022, Sue continued to offer the often sold-out painting classes, taught by some of the Arts Abound artists.   Sue has studied under numerous artists to learn watercolor, acrylic painting, cold wax & oil, and collage. Her goals for the Hammond Castle Museum sketch classes are to engage those who are new to the world of art and reinvigorate those who haven’t picked up a blank canvas or sketch pad in a long time. Sue’s philosophy on the creative process encourages you to be less concerned about the final product and instead to enjoy the journey of creativity and get lost in the moment. Once you find yourself in your work, you may just be surprised!

Join noted raconteur Phil Storey for this "fun filled" Phil Facts about Gloucester's deep literary past! Phil Storey is a local local historian, noted raconteur, and master storyteller. He developed this engaging literary walking tour during Gloucester’s 400+ celebration and is excited to continue hosting it in partnership with the Gloucester Writers Center. Gloucester has long been home to remarkable writers and literary voices. From early pioneers like Judith Sargent Murray and her groundbreaking feminist writings, to Nobel Prize-winning poet T.S. Eliot, who spent many summers of his boyhood in Gloucester, the city’s connection to literature runs deep. Gloucester’s landscape, harbor, and sea life have inspired generations of writers and poets. The tour also explores the rich poetic dialogue between Charles Olson and Vincent Ferrini in the twentieth century, as well as the many visiting authors who came to Gloucester seeking inspiration. These include Rudyard Kipling, author of Captains Courageous; Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, whose poem The Wreck of the Hesperus was inspired by the region; and horror master H.P. Lovecraft, whose The Shadow Over Innsmouth echoes the atmosphere of Cape Ann’s fishing towns. Join us for a funny, entertaining, and informative walk through Gloucester’s literary past. United Flamenco returns to Windhover for its third consecutive summer, bringing together artists from across the country and from Spain in a shared spirit of creation, discovery, and flamenco expression. This powerful event is part of a residency at Windhover which brings these extraordinary artists together to hone their craft and create new expressions of flamenco. The performance brings together two complementary dimensions of the art form with live music, singing, and dance: a new creative work in development that stretches the boundaries of traditional flamenco and a tablao-style cuadro performance. Avery, Gottlieb & Rothko: By the Sea explores the artistic bond between three pivotal 20th century American artists—Milton Avery (1885–1965), Adolph Gottlieb (1903–1974), and Mark Rothko (1903-1970)—whose shared summers in Gloucester, Massachusetts, from the 1920s to the mid-1940s had a lasting impact on their work. The exhibit is being presented through a collaboration between the Cape Ann Museum and The Phillips Collection (Washington, D.C.). On view at the Cape Ann Museum from June 30 through September 27, 2026, the exhibition will then be displayed at The Phillips Collection from October 24, 2026, through January 24, 2027.  As the first Cape Ann Museum generated show to then be taken on by another institution, the Museum is working in close collaboration with all three artists’ estates. The show will feature over 82 works from the 1920s to the 1960s, with loans from 26 prominent national and private institutional collections, including the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., which is a central partner lending 10 works by Mark Rothko to the exhibition. Many works in this exhibition have never been on public view.   This unprecedented exhibit, accompanied by a 224-page catalog produced by Rizzoli Electa, will reveal the deep connections between these artists, emphasizing their roles as both mentors and peers, while showcasing the unique working methods and lifelong friendships that shaped their groundbreaking art. The reopening coincides with the debut of Avery, Gottlieb & Rothko: By the Sea, a landmark exhibition that celebrates the artistic bond between Milton Avery, Adolph Gottlieb, and Mark Rothko—three pivotal figures in 20th-century American art whose summers in Gloucester shaped their creative development. As the Museum passes its 150th anniversary, this transformation strengthens our commitment to preserving Cape Ann’s rich artistic and cultural heritage while expanding opportunities for learning, discovery, and community connection. Join us every Wednesday morning in July & August for Bubbles and Books on our seaside lawn! Bubbles and Books is so much more than just storytime. It’s a seaside bubble party featuring stories, music, crafts, a light snack & even an outdoor scavenger hunt. Doors open at 10:00 am, with bubbles and a craft, then the story & snacks begin about 10:20 am. We recommend you bring a cozy blanket for your little one to cuddle on while we enjoy the storybooks on the lawn. After storytime, enjoy more bubbles and end the morning with a kid-friendly scavenger hunt in front of the Museum. Don’t forget sunscreen, and we encourage little ones to come dressed in their favorite crown, cape, or whatever makes them feel magical! Tickets for this event are $10 for ages 8 to adults, and kids ages 7 and under are only $5. Hammond Castle Museum Member savings apply. We recommend that you arrive 15 minutes early to allow enough time for the walk from the parking lot down to the Museum, then for the check-in process and the walk to the lawn. There are many stairs throughout the campus and inside the Museum. Strollers are not allowed in the Museum or on the Museum Grounds, and oversized baby carriers are not permitted in the Museum due to the many narrow passageways. This ticket grants you access to the Bubbles & Books program, which will be held on the ocean-facing lawn. If you wish to tour the Museum after this program, ticket holders may purchase Self-Guided Tour tickets in the Museum Shop at a 20% discount. Little ones 4 and under enjoy FREE admission to guided and self-guided tours! Rain or Shine. Tickets are non-refundable and non-transferable.
