Experience a solo exhibition of works by North Shore Arts member Sandra Kavanaugh, on display from May 27 – June 15. Sandra works almost exclusively in pastel and exhibits her work throughout New England including the North Shore and Cape Cod in Massachusetts. She was awarded Master Circle status with IAPS, the International Association of Pastel Societies in 2023. She is a member of the Copley Society in Boston and was elected to associate status with the Pastel Society of America. Sandra is also a signature member of the Pastel Society of New Hampshire and is a Master member of the Newburyport Art Association. Her evocative, delicately rendered pastel paintings perfectly depict the beauty of the New England coast.

About Kimberly For nearly 45 years, Sand Castles, a beloved apparel and gift shop in Rockport, has been a central part of Kim Tibert’s life. Her journey with the store began as a teenager working there, eventually leading to her becoming the owner in 1987. In 1989, the shop relocated from Broadway to its current picturesque setting at 9 Mt. Pleasant Street, offering a full view of the iconic Motif No. 1. Nestled in the heart of this quintessential New England town, Kim has always taken pride in making Sand Castles welcoming. From vibrant window boxes to eye-catching displays, she ensures the store is one of the first sights that greet visitors driving into downtown Rockport. Sand Castles features clothing for women, men, and children, along with unique gifts that reflect the charm and character of coastal living. Kim has always enjoyed the creative energy of retail and the opportunity to connect with customers. The shop remains open year-round, offering a warm and consistent presence even in the quieter winter months when many local businesses reduce hours. Kim and her husband Bob have built a rich life in Rockport, raising seven children and now enjoying their six grandchildren—with twin granddaughters on the way. She is deeply grateful to her loyal team, especially shop manager Traci Budrow, who has been with Sand Castles for 31 years. Kim insists on sharing any recognition with Traci, saying she couldn’t do what she does without her. Thanks to the support of her staff, Kim was able to return to school in 2008 to pursue a nursing degree and now works full-time as a nurse at O’Maley Middle School. In yet another chapter of her entrepreneurial journey, three years ago she opened Wharf Rat Trading Co., located next door to Sand Castles. DOWNLOAD WINNER'S BIO Gloucester Small Business Weeks Reception  Joe Ciolino of The Weathervane is the 'Small Business Persons of the Year' winner from Gloucester. Join the Greater Cape Ann Chamber in celebrating his win at Oak to Ember in Gloucester. About Joe ​Joseph “Joe” Ciolino has been living and working in the Gloucester community his entire life. A graduate of Gloucester High School, he continued his education at the Wentworth Institute in Boston, and holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.   Following 21 years at the Gloucester Building Center, holding the positions of Store Manager and a Corporate Vice President, he opened The Weathervane in 1991. He will be observing his 34th year as a sole proprietor in August of 2025. During this time, Joe has served on many local boards and councils, headed up the Gloucester Downtown Merchants Association, spearheaded the annual Sidewalk Bazar, and organizes the Downtown Holiday Parade. Joe is a past board member of the Greater Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce, serving on its Retail Committee.    Joe has served on the Gloucester City Council for twelve years, the last two serving as Council President.   He was a past Cooperator for the Addison Gilbert Hospital and Sawyer Free Library. Until it’s North Shore merger, Joe volunteered with the American Heart Association and managed the Gloucester Chapter. He has been a member of the Gloucester Rotary Club since 1992, president in 2004, and the recipient of the Paul Harris Distinguished Service Award in 2017. The people of the town stood ready to take action against the British, and many of them did. In this walking tour down Middle Street — one of Gloucester’s oldest streets – we will step back in time to meet  people who were witness to Revolution right from this spot; see where they lived and gathered, in houses still standing today; and hear the stories of the roles they played in defending liberty, as patriots, privateers, preachers and more. This tour was developed in conjunction with the 250th Anniversary of the American Revolution. For 55 years, Tower of Power has delivered the best in funk and soul music. “We were a Soul band called The Motowns.” recalls Emilio Castillo. “Rocco was the bass player, I was there, and my brother was the drummer. I met “Doc” Kupka back in 1968, and gave him an audition. He came in the band, and we eventually changed our name to the Tower of Power.” The reason for the band name change was that they had a specific goal in mind.  East Bay Grease defined their sound and landed them with Warner Brothers. Bump City, their 1972 debut for the label, was a hit on both the Billboard 200 and the R&B Albums chart, and netted them the hits “You’re Still A Young Man” and “Down to The Nightclub.” The 70s were a boom period with radio classics like “So Very Hard to Go” and “What Is Hip?,” and the band continued to tour and record over the years. Castillo says their love of the stage is the same today as it was back in 1968. 50 years later, in 2018, they returned to Oakland to celebrate their landmark 50th anniversary. Tower’s window-rattling grooves and raucous party spirit has been a balm for the soul throughout their half-century existence, but the release of 50 Years of Funk & Soul: Live at the Fox Theater couldn’t have arrived at a better time. The band has long since surpassed Castillo’s modest aspirations, traveling the world, enjoying hit singles on their own and backing legendary artists including Otis Redding, Elton John, Santana, the Grateful Dead, John Lee Hooker, Aerosmith, Bonnie Raitt, and countless others. In the process they’ve defined an “Oakland soul” sound as instantly recognizable as those from Castillo’s hometown, Detroit, as well as inspirations like Memphis and Philadelphia.  The future of Tower of Power is set out to be vigorous and dynamic, and will prove to be just that for fans around the world starved for the band’s groove just the way Tower of Power likes it!

Learn techniques to capture a scene in paint with a good sketch. A paint-sketch is different from a "painting" in its immediacy, freshness, and speed. We will cover methods of simplification, color choices, paint application, and capturing the feeling of an entire scene with loose precision. We will work in a Cape Ann alleyway and do some exercises from photos in the studio. The workshop includes a demo, and a final critique with discussion at the end of the day. Participants may paint in acrylic or oil. Emily will provide the reference photos. All skill levels are welcome. Space is limited.

LITERARY GLOUCESTER, A WALKING TOUR, began as a project of the Gloucester 400th+ in 2023, and it proved so popular it was picked up by the Gloucester Writers Center in 2024 to keep it going. Now approaching its third year, Phil Storey continues to add rich details to the walks, to be held every second and fourth Saturday morning from May through September 2025, culminating in a Sails & Trails tour on the 27th. Gloucester is known as an endless source of fish tales, but it is also home to a vast literary landscape. T.S. Eliot, often regarded as the most important poet writing in English in the 20th century, summered in Gloucester throughout his childhood. He bought a composition notebook at Proctor Brothers downtown, in which he wrote his early poems, including "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock." Horror writer H.P. Lovecraft set a number of his weird tales in Gloucester such as ?The Shadow Over Innsmouth? featuring the American Legion building on the tour. One of the best-selling American author of the 19th century, Elizabeth Stuart Phelps, summered in Gloucester most of her life. Sadly, she is largely forgotten now, as women artists so often are, but in her time she was so popular she attracted other creatives to the area, including Longfellow, whom she brought to Norman?s Woe, a rocky outcropping which inspired ?The Wreck of the Hesperus.? Judith Sargent Murray, Kipling, Charles Olson, and many others are ready to be re-discovered on a free two-hour walking tour of Gloucester with noted raconteur Phil Storey. Philip Storey is a preeminent historian of the local. A noted raconteur and story-teller, he developed this engaging tour over the course of the Gloucester 400+ and is excited to continue hosting it in partnership with the Gloucester Writers Center.

The White-Ellery House, built in 1710 for the Reverend John White, Gloucester’s first settled minister in First Parish, was situated in Gloucester’s Town Green, the center of the community at that time. The house exhibits a certain elegance and refinement while providing for basic needs of its early owners. Sam, Peter, & Band will be bringing the music of Jerry Garcia's supergroup's album Old & In The Way to the stage! The music that Sam Grisman heard his father David Grisman and Jerry Garcia make in the early ’90s in the house Sam grew up in (the simply titled “Jerry Garcia & David Grisman,” as just one example) is not only some of the most timeless acoustic music ever recorded, it also triggers his oldest and fondest musical memories. Sam is inspired by how much camaraderie, love, and joy is simply oozing out of his father and his best friend, but also how deeply they get underneath their favorite songs (originals, covers, and traditional/old-time tunes) and how expertly that material was curated. Sam’s aim in starting Sam Grisman Project is to build a container where he and his friends can showcase their genuine love and appreciation for the legacy of Dawg and Jerry’s music, the impact it has made on their own individual musical voices, and also to showcase the original music that their squad has to offer the world. Now, in a team-up with longtime family friend Peter Rowan, Sam and the band will be bringing the music of legendary bluegrass outfit Old and in the Way to the stage for select performances in 2025 and beyond!

Join the Cape Ann Museum at Gloucester City Hall to celebrate Juneteenth, the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States.  9:00 a.m. – 9:30 a.m. Flag raising with comments from city officials and CAM staff outside City Hall.  9:30 a.m. – 10:45 a.m. Community reading of Frederick Douglass’s What to the Slave is the Fourth of July? Following the reading, educator, Project Scholar for the Freeman Family Project, and Gloucester Juneteenth founder Toni Waldron will lead breakout groups for community members to discuss the speech and their experience reading it. Kyrouz Auditorium, Gloucester City Hall  10:45 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Interactive program in the City Hall parking lot guided by Toni Waldron on the history of the Freeman family, a prominent Black family living in Gloucester in the 18th and 19th centuries. A table organized and staffed by the Bookstore of Gloucester and Dogtown Books will distribute books that center diverse voices, including those written by BIPOC authors, to visitors thanks to the generosity of Action, Inc. Join us for a deep dive to learn about the coat and the Gloucester families behind the story.   Join us Thursdays for a unique experience. Led by a CAM docent, these deep dives into a single artwork or object from the Collection will begin with conversation, a short presentation and complimentary coffee at the Carlson Center, followed by a special trip to the James Center to view the object being discussed. Through Tom’s cinematic eyes, his family’s life isn’t the dream he imagined. In a rundown St. Louis apartment the matriarch, Amanda Wingfield, is desperately clinging to a past of parties and endless callers. Her adult children, Tom and Laura, become victims of her delusions as she pushes for Tom to provide for the struggling family and Laura to find a husband. The two seek solace in ways of escaping their mother and their own misery until a visit from a gentleman caller presents the possibility of new opportunities. Renowned playwright Tennessee Williams opens the 2025 Season with this classic drama, directed by Doug Lockwood. Running from June 5 to 28, all performances are at Gloucester Stage’s Theater 267 East Main Street, Gloucester. Showtimes are Wednesdays & Thursdays at 7:30pm, Fridays & Saturdays at 8:00pm, and matinees Saturdays & Sunday at 3:00pm.

The Isidore Quartet, recipient of a 2023 Avery Fisher Career Grant and winner of the 2022 Banff International String Quartet Competition, joins forces with saxophonist Steven Banks, a 2022 Avery Fisher Career Grant winner. Their program features Ravel’s String Quartet in F Major, Beethoven’s String Quartet No. 12, Op. 127 and Banks’s own Quintet for Saxophone and String Quartet. PROGRAM RAVEL: String Quartet in F Major STEVEN BANKS: Reflections and Exaltations (Quintet for saxophone & string quartet) Intermission BEETHOVEN: String Quartet No. 12 in E-flat Major, Op. 127 ABOUT ISIDORE QUARTET Winners of a 2023 Avery Fisher Career Grant, and the 14th Banff International String Quartet Competition in 2022, the New York City-based Isidore String Quartet was formed in 2019 with a vision to revisit, rediscover, and reinvigorate the repertory.  The quartet is heavily influenced by the Juilliard String Quartet and the idea of ‘approaching the established as if it were brand new, and the new as if it were firmly established.’
