About Charlotte: A graduate of Harvard College, Charlotte Gordon received a master's degree in creative writing and a Ph.D. in history and literature from Boston University. She has been a frequent guest on NPR and the CBC, including spots on Weekend Edition and The Current. From 1999-2002 she was Elie Wiesel's teaching assistant at Boston University. Registrants will receive a link to access the Zoom Webinar via email.** Learn all about forensic genealogy and its most common uses. Law enforcement, for example, is using genetic genealogy databases to solve decades-old serious crimes by matching familiar DNA connections to perpetrators and their family members. The U.S. Department of Defense is using forensic genealogy to identify the remains of American servicemen listed as Missing In Action or Prisoners of War in order to provide them with proper military burials. Forensic genealogy is all being used in citizenship & immigration cases, in missing & unknown heir cases, and in adoption research. Led by Michael Brophy, a nationally known, professional genealogical researcher, heir search specialist, and lecturer from the Boston area. He has served as Program Director and Publicity Director for the Massachusetts Genealogical Council. Brophy was also the first Treasurer of the New England of Association of Professional Genealogists. He was featured on the Irish TV series Dead Money, a genealogy TV show about heir searchers. In 2010, Mr. Brophy was hired to conduct research for the NBC television program "Who Do You Think You Are?", on an episode dedicated to the family history of actress Gwyneth Paltrow. Throughout the history of art, flowers have been more than just beautiful decorations - they've served as powerful symbols, carrying secret meanings known to artists and their patrons. From the purity of lilies in Renaissance Madonnas to the fleeting nature of life represented by wilting bouquets in Dutch still lifes, each petal and stem tells a story. This fascinating exploration of flora in art will unveil the language of flowers, revealing how these delicate blooms have shaped our visual culture and continue to inspire artists - and flower lovers! - to this day. About Jane: Jane Oneail holds a master’s in Art History from Boston University and a master’s in Education from the Harvard University Graduate School of Education. She is a NH native and has worked at some of the state’s most esteemed cultural institutions, including the League of New Hampshire Craftsmen, where she served as Executive Director, and the Currier Museum of Art, where she held the role of Senior Educator. Jane founded the Currier’s Alzheimer’s Cafe and led the tour program for the museum and the Frank Lloyd Wright-designed Zimmerman House. She has taught Art History at the college level for more than a decade, most recently at the NH Institute of Art. Registrants will receive a link to access the Zoom Webinar via email.** Join Emmalie Langan, Training Coordinator for Samaritans of Merrimack Valley, for a presentation on suicide prevention. Samaritans is a suicide prevention and postvention (after a suicide death) center serving the northeast area of MA since 1980 and a program of Family Services of the Merrimack Valley, which is a social service agency with over 20 different programs serving the Merrimack Valley. With over 135 suicide deaths per day in the US, it is important to be able to recognize when a friend or family member may be struggling with thoughts of suicide. Knowing when to ask, “Are you thinking about taking your life?” is an important first step in helping someone. This presentation will help provide participants with the information necessary to possibly save a life. After this presentation, audience members will be able to: Understand the prevalence of suicide in the US Dispel the myths around suicide Recognize the risk factors and warnings signs of possible suicide risk as well as protective factors Be able to openly and nonjudgmentally talk with someone who may be at risk Better understand what risk level a person may be at (non-clinically) Have the resources available to get help for the person There will be time to ask questions at the end of this presentation. Emmalie has been the Samaritans training coordinator for over 4 years and has facilitated various programs, including Question, Persuade, Refer (QPR), Youth Mental Health First Aid as well as trainings focused on working aged people and elders. She comes to Samaritans with experience as a peer counselor for LBGTQIA+ young adults and working in youth and homeless services.  Presented in partnership with Memorial Hall Library in Andover. Registrants will receive a link to access the Zoom Webinar via email.** Why do some people lose their lives in America’s national parks? Randi Minetor, author of seven books in the non-fiction "Death in the National Parks" series, explores the fatal mistakes people make when they venture into unfamiliar wilderness. Some forget critical steps in their preparation, forging off into wild lands far too challenging for their level of experience. Some refuse advice, ignoring warnings from rangers and more seasoned adventurers. Others are simply in the wrong place at the right time, becoming victims of a lightning strike or a falling rock—or ravenous grizzly bears. And some fall prey to other people who set out to kill them. Randi shares highlights of her in-depth research and what it reveals about the people who perish in the parks. Most important, she provides helpful tips on how to avoid your own disaster in a national park. Be ready for your summer vacation plans with this important and, probably, humorous presentation! About Randi: Born and raised in Rochester, NY, Randi Minetor discovered the backcountry wonders of America's national parks in 1992 with her husband, photographer/lighting designer Nic Minetor. That first trip changed her life, and by 2000, the Minetors had pledged to see all 430 national parks in their lifetimes. They found a way to subsidize this passion in 2006, when they began writing and photographing books on the parks for The Globe Pequot Press (now Rowman & Littlefield). Today Randi has written more than 90 books, including seven books in the nonfiction Death in the National Parks series, ten hiking guides in New York State, several bird-finding guides, and even reference books on health topics. To date, they have visited 360 national parks. In addition, Nic's photography appears in eight Quick Reference Guides to the Birds, Trees, and Wildflowers of New York City and New York State, and the Trees and Wildflowers of the Mid-Atlantic States. Registrants will receive a link to access the Zoom Webinar via email.** Depictions of queer individuals have occurred in films dating back to the earliest days of the filmmaking industry. Join film historian Dr. Annette Bochenek as she presents groundbreaking portrayals of queer individuals and the impact of the Production Code on their depictions in classic cinema. The program will include a multimedia presentation consisting of photos, video clips, and captivating stories. RECORDING NOTE: This program will be recorded.
