Zoom links will be sent to registrants the day of the program.  Please join us for a special program presented by Paul Mayo, a local educator and nonprofit leader!  In Paul's own words:  This presentation reflects on my personal experience growing up during the 1960s, a transformative period in American history shaped by the Civil Rights Movement. My family roots trace back to South Carolina, while I was raised in Connecticut — two places that represented very different cultural, social, and historical realities for Black families during that era. Although the Civil Rights Movement was unfolding across the country, my understanding of it as a child was limited. Within my family, these events were rarely discussed. Like many families of that generation, there was a focus on stability, hard work, and moving forward rather than revisiting painful histories or openly discussing racial injustice. As a result, I grew up navigating two distinct worlds: the Southern legacy carried through family traditions and experiences, and the Northern environment where I was educated and socialized. This presentation explores how those contrasting cultural influences shaped my early identity, my evolving awareness of race and history, and my later understanding of the Civil Rights Movement. Through personal reflection, I will discuss how lived experience, family silence, and regional differences influenced what I knew — and did not know — about Black history while it was actively being made. Ultimately, this conversation connects personal memory with historical context, highlighting how individual stories help deepen our collective understanding of Black history and its continuing impact today. About Paul Mayo:  Paul Mayo is an educator, administrator, and nonprofit leader committed to expanding educational access and leadership opportunities for students from underrepresented communities. He earned a B.A. in Economics from Bucknell University, a M.A. in Elementary Education from the University of Bridgeport, and has completed a Graduate Certificate in Nonprofit Leadership at Manhattanville College. A veteran teacher, coach, and program director, Paul serves as the Director of the Malcolm Coates Prep@Pingree Program at Pingree School, where he leads a comprehensive academic enrichment and mentoring initiative preparing middle and high school students for success in rigorous secondary schools, college, and beyond. He is also the founder of CRE1619 (The Civil Rights Experience), an experiential learning program that engages students and adults in immersive educational travel to historically significant civil rights sites across the United States. Paul previously served as Diversity Coordinator at New Canaan Country School, where, as a member of the administrative team, he helped develop and review institutional policies, practices, and programs related to diversity and inclusion. In this role, he strengthened community advocacy efforts and promoted meaningful dialogue and understanding around multicultural issues. Paul believes that students who engage with diverse perspectives—through classroom learning, discussion, and community interaction—demonstrate deeper engagement and greater personal and academic growth. You are welcome to come to our library & watch her on our big screen or zoom from home. The Saints of Swallow author will be discussing her new book Women of a Promiscuous Nature. Please register and indicate yes, if you plan to attend in person (or no if you plan to zoom the program). Light snacks will be served to to the live audience. A chance to win a copy of the ARC (advanced reader copy) will also take place after the zoom (for live audience members only). About the book: On a brisk February morning, 24 year-old Ruth Foster is stopped by the local sheriff. He insists that Ruth allow him to take her to a health clinic, threatening to arrest her if she doesn't undergo testing for venereal disease. Though Ruth has never shared more than a kiss with many a man, it is assumed she is promiscuous. By the day's end, Ruth is one of a dozen women held at the State Industrial Farm Colony for Women. All to help abide 1918 "The American Plan" (initiated to combat the spread of venereal diseases among solders) which empowered authorities to arrest any woman "reasonably suspected" of promiscuity. What will happen to Ruth?!!! About Donna: Born and raised in Raleigh, she now only lives an hour away in Dunn, North Carolina. Donna's books are known for evoking challenges of the heart and the complex heritage of the American South. She is a recipient of numerous literary awards! A great story teller! John Williams an American composer and conductor. Over his seven-decade career, he has composed many of the best known scores in film history. Best known for his collaborations with George Lucas (STAR WARS)  and Steven Spielberg (JAWS), he has received numerous accolades, including 26 Grammy Awards, five Academy Awards, seven BAFTA Awards, three Emmy Awards, and four Golden Globe Awards. With a total of 54 Academy Award nominations, he is the second-most nominated person in the award's history, after Walt Disney. He is also the oldest Academy Award nominee in any category, receiving a nomination at 91 years old.
