Have you ever wanted to make a sculpture in clay but thought that it was too difficult? In this class, sculpting instructor Neil Grant will teach you a method for creating sculptures that simplifies the sculpting process and makes it both engaging and fun. It doesn’t matter whether the sculpture is a person, an animal, an inanimate object, or a work of your imagination Neil will teach you how to see your subject as a simplified set of shapes that you can combine together and then refine through a series of steps into a final piece. Students are encouraged to bring their own ideas, or you can simply do one of the class projects. No experience is needed, just a desire to learn and to create. Bring an apron and tie long hair back. Tools will be provided, but students are welcome to bring their own preferred ones if they have them. Cape Cod based fiddler Rose Clancy is a much respected, high energy musician playing fiddle, mandolin and banjo at concerts and festivals throughout the Northeast while sharing the stage with some of the greatest traditional performers. Clancy’s unique fiddle style embraces, Northern Irish, Scottish, Cape Breton and some French-Canadian influences. Rose carries forward the music played by multiple generations of her family with roots dating back to 1950s Ireland, where members of the Clancy family played at country dances and concerts throughout Ireland. Rose learned Traditional Music from her Father, Eugene Clancy and began her musical career at an early age performing with her family’s musical group, The Clancy Tradition. Rose has performed at Gaelic Roots, Boston College, the South Shore Conservatory, Roots and Branches with Robbie O’Connell and at The Burren Backroom, with Jacqueline Schwab. She has released several CDs with The Clancy Tradition and a solo CD with pianist Brendan Dolan.“Lovely, energetic music played without pretension”. Daniel Neely, The Irish Echo ‘Powerful fiddling from an Irish American who also knows the Scottish and Cape Breton traditions” Alex Monaghan, Folkworld. Eugene Clancy originally hails from Armagh, Northern Ireland. In 1960 he left Ireland with his two brothers to tour the United States as The Irish Ramblers. Eventually, he settled in New York and continued the musical tradition with his children and members of his extended family known as “The Clancy Tradition” in the 1980’s. Eugene has performed at Carnegie Hall, Donnelly Memorial Theater, Soldiers Field, Chicago, The Gate of Horn, Usher Hall, Edinburgh, Scotland, Gertys Folk City & the Bitter End. Max Cohen, a virtuoso finger style guitarist who also possesses a brilliantly emotive voice, Max has been playing and writing for more than thirty years. His musicianship has drawn accolades from critics and fans alike. As a performer, his attention to detail is what truly distinguishes him, as his playing is characterized by technical precision and exquisite tone. Max has played and toured all over the US and Canada. but currently he is living on Cape Cod where he is involved with the local traditional music scene. These days Max is accompanying the likes of fiddler Rose Clancy, as well as Franco American fiddler Donna Hebert. Max is also the regular accompanist of renowned folk singer Priscilla Herdman, and he plays with the Martha’s Vineyard based group The Misfits of Avalon. John Alden, upright bass player is a talented multi-instrumentalist, singer, dance caller and a Cape Cod cranberry farmer. Playing the largest and the lowest pitched string instrument, John enhances the folk music by providing the rhythmic music to the group and playing essential parts of a folk song that you don’t necessarily hear by providing a good feeling and steady pulse.

This summer, the Cape Cod Museum of Art is pleased to present a major exhibition featuring the art of renowned artist, Carmen Cicero. Carmen Cicero has been a prominent figure for over seventy years in the New York and Cape Cod contemporary art scene. While his early work focused on Abstract Expressionism (influenced by Robert Motherwell among others), he was later drawn to the figurative. After a 1971 fire destroyed his New Jersey studio, and with it, his entire body of work, Cicero’s art took a personal turn- combining figuration, landscape and wit in compositions with Surrealist overtones, a style that became emblematic of his later work’s representations and state of mind. Curated by acclaimed art critic, David Ebony, this solo exhibition will showcase works on paper in Carmen’s favorite mediums – pencil, ink and watercolor. “We want this exhibition to be uplifting for visitors, so we have selected many playful, colorful works… including those with themes of music and the painting process.” says Ebony who also oversaw the production of the newly published, monumental book Carmen Cicero Drawings and Watercolors: Tales of Intrigue, Danger and Humor. David also wrote the essay for the book. Wheel throwing is one of the most relaxing and meditative mediums, utilizing the repetitive nature of the wheel to calm the mind and body. Whether you’re a complete beginner or an experienced artist, this 6 week class will emphasize wheel throwing fundamentals: centering, opening and raising the walls of symmetrical wheel thrown forms. Rebecca will begin each class day with useful demonstrations and then shift to individual instruction when needed. The class will also include techniques using underglaze, carving, faceting and the use of sgraffito. This exhibition displays 47 artworks recently acquired into the Cape Cod Museum of Art (CCMoA) Permanent Collection through the fulfillment of the Sigmund M. and Mary B. Hyman promised gift. These artworks were created by some of the most important figures in Western art history including Bonnard, Bouché, Chagall, Davies, Degas, Giacometti, Glackens, Kokoschka, Luks, Maillol, Matisse, Moore, Mucha, Picasso, Pène du Bois, Renoir, Soyer, Toulouse-Lautrec, Whorf, and Wiggins, among others. Mary Bloom Hyman (1927-2024) was born and grew up on Cape Cod. She married the love of her life Sigmund “Sig” Hyman (1921-2002) of Baltimore, and together the couple chose Stevenson, Maryland as their residence. Even though Mary lived in Maryland most of her adult life, she visited Cape Cod regularly and always made time to stop at the Cape Cod Museum of Art to chat with the staff and check on the museum’s progress.

This year’s movies feature femme fatale characters in dramatic roles, including a light-hearted 1934 Mae West classic, two 90s tense dramatic thrillers, and a later award-winning British science fiction film. The first film, a musical Mae West movie from the 1930s, will be shown free on Thursday, March 6, with doors opening at 5:30 pm as an after business hours gathering in the indoor tavern of Smith Family Beer Garden on Main Street in Hyannis.ABOUT THE MOVIE:Set in New Orleans in the 1890s, West sings with the Duke Ellington Orchestra, introducing to viewers the now-classic torch song My Old Flame. Hyannis Film Festival will hand out parade beads to celebrate Mardi Gras week Smith Familt popcorn will give moviegoers complimetary popcorn. When reason and logic are kept at bay, a magical inner world is revealed. Artists from Cape Cod and across the USA and around the world are invited to submit their original artwork to the Cape Cod Museum of Art’s Annual International Juried Exhibition on the theme Dreamscapes and Inner Worlds. This call for art is intended to allow for broad interpretations, encompassing, but not limited to, surrealist imagery, fantasy, memories, stream of consciousness, otherworldly visions and abstraction. This International Exhibition will be prominently featured at the Cape Cod Museum of Art in our expansive Hope / McClennen Gallery. All interpretations on the theme of Dreamscapes and Inner Worlds will be reviewed by internationally recognized artist, curator and educator Joe Diggs. Three (3) monetary prizes will be awarded by the juror: $500, $200, $100. Artwork selected for the exhibition can be made available to the public for sale, with 60% of the proceeds going directly to you – the artist, and 40% to the CCMoA. Artwork submission(s) are open to all traditional and unconventional 2d and 3d mediums, as well as, video and digital art. Immerse yourself in the unique environments of marsh, creek, forest and beach surrounding the Museum and learn to pay attention in a new way with Carol Marcy’s guided meditations. The walk moves slowly interspersed with reflections that encourage a deep connection with your surroundings. Learn how slowing down, grounding and opening your awareness to the abundant life in and around you, can be healing, calming, peaceful and deeply refreshing. The practice of forest bathing comes to us from Japan, and draws inspiration from ancient Shinto and Buddhist practices that recognize the healing qualities of nature. You will bathe in the living being of the Forest by taking deep breaths of air filled with the calming scent of pine, experiencing the breeze on your skin, hearing the sound of the leaf orchestra under the direction of the wind and trees, soaking up the healing rays of the sun, and seeing the vast array of colors and shapes provided by Nature. Carol Marcy has a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology, a Masters in Dance/Movement Therapy and is a certified Meditation teacher.
