Lenox Library is excited to offer a low key and judgement-free group for all families. Babies up to 15 months (actual or developmentally) and older siblings are welcome. Join us for songs and bounces followed by play and chatting, led by Lenox Library Youth Assistant Sara Jarvie, an early childhood development specialist. In addition, on the first Friday of every month, we will have a special baby foot or hand print craft! Completely cost and judgement free, we are happy to help you capture your little one’s foot or handprint with a seasonally themed picture. We know firsthand how fast they grow and how hard it can be to capture those milestones at home. We have the supplies and extra helping hands, you just have to bring the baby. Please note: If you or your child has any signs of illness, please stay home. We look forward to seeing you the following week!

Fall is here—the leaves are turning, the temperatures are dropping, and soon Saw-whet Owls will be migrating into our region! Our friends from Berkshire Bird Observatory (BBO) invite you to an evening owl banding session just for Lenox Library patrons on Tuesday, November 4, 2025 at 7:45 p.m. at Jug End State Reservation in Egremont. Each fall BBO bands Northern Saw-whet Owls as part of a collaborative effort to learn more about the movements and population trends of these secretive, nocturnal birds.  They open nets only on nights with relatively cold temperatures and north winds to maximize capture rates.  On nights when conditions are suitable, BBO bands for four hours per night, starting at sunset, using a single, x-shaped array of four mist nets centered on an audio lure. Curious owls come down from the sky during migration and when we are lucky some of these owls end up in the nets.  Once captured, BBO bands each owl and collects data on age, sex, body condition and molt before releasing them back into the night sky. In the event of inclement weather, the session will be held the following evening on November 5, 2025.

You’re invited to learn from journalist and author Joseph Lee as he chats online with us about his stirring memoir, Nothing More of This Land: Community, Power, and the Search for Indigenous Identity. In it, he explores Indigenous identity in proximity to land that serves as an iconic vacationing spot for the wealthy–the “island paradise” Martha’s Vineyard. Growing up Aquinnah Wampanoag, Joseph Lee grappled with what it means to be an Indigenous person in the world today, especially as tribal land, culture, and community face new threats. Starting with the story of his own tribe, which is from the iconic Martha’s Vineyard, Lee tackles key questions around Indigenous identity and the stubborn legacy of colonialism. Lee weaves his own story—and that of his family—with conversations with Indigenous leaders, artists, and scholars from around the world about everything from culture and language to climate change and the politics of belonging. As he unpacks the meaning of Indigenous identity, Lee grants us a new understanding of our nation and what a better community might look like. **NOTE: Change of Venue** Chiefs Oscar “Hutch” Hutchinson and Edward “Cap” Conklin led the Lenox Fire Department for the first 71 years of its inception. Each brought common sense and ingenuity in equal measure to their role. Both were in military service: Hutch as a Captain in the Massachusetts State Guard and Cap as a WWII Lieutenant with a Purple Heart. Join Local History Librarian Amy Lafave at Lenox’s new Public Safety Complex (227 Housatonic Street) as she tells the story of these two intrepid men. The calamitous fire of the morning of Easter Sunday 1909, which spurred the creation of the department, also will be covered. The presentation will be held in the Community Room off the lobby entrance, and will last about 45 minutes, with time for questions and reminiscences to follow. We are pleased to be a part of the Open House which will include a ribbon-cutting ceremony, a display of antique fire apparatus, and a chance to tour the new building.
