**This event will now take place at the Community Center, 39 Marrett Road, Lexington, MA The world watched, horrified, as fire ravaged the ancient Notre-Dame Cathedral in April 2019. The very next day the President of France, Émmanuel Macron, vowed that the treasured building --- one of the symbols of the entire nation --- would be reopened in just five year’s time, following the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. Many expressed doubt, given the gravity of the damage, that this was an achievable goal, or that the structure could even be saved at all. The story of how that goal was met --- with glorious results --- is a chronicle of vision, organizational leadership, armies of skilled craftspeople, unprecedented public philanthropy, and a global will to rescue one of the world’s greatest architectural treasures. Architectural historian (and Winchester resident) John McConnell will present an illustrated lecture on how this great story unfolded, and the world came to see the renewed cathedral as it hadn’t been seen in close to 800 years. Registration is suggested to plan for seating and to be notified of any changes. About our speaker: John McConnell earned a B.A. degree in English at Michigan State University in 1970, followed by a Master of Architecture degree from Harvard University in 1975. He has taught American Architectural history at Boston College since 1979. In addition, he has been a lecturer in architectural history at the Harvard Graduate School of Design since 1987, an architecture lecturer-in-residence for the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and scores of other groups. He is much sought-after for his informative walking tours of Boston neighborhoods.  John is a principal of McConnell+Partners Architects Inc in Boston. Founded in 1987, the firm specializes in residential and small-scale institutional and commercial design, as well as historically sensitive additions and renovation of older buildings. Prior to founding the firm, John worked for Boston architectural firms, chiefly Shepley Bulfinch Richardson & Abbott, where he was the designer for several projects including the Fye Laboratory at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, and a major renovation and organ installation at the historic Old South Church at Boston's Copley Square. In addition to being a practicing architect, he has devoted himself to oil painting since 1990 (www.JohnMcConnellArtist.com), specializing in traditional landscape painting. He is currently represented by a number of art galleries in Maine, Massachusetts, Virginia and Washington DC. In addition to the above, John is the author of Courthouses of the Commonwealth: A History of Superior Courthouse Architecture in Massachusetts (UMass Press, 1984,) and contributor to Shingle Style Houses, Then and Now (Schiffer Press 2006, and Green Residences, Schiffer Press 2008.) Finally, he has been Chair of the Winchester Cultural Council, vice-president of the board of the Griffin Museum of Photography, a Director of the Winchester Historical Society and President of the Jumelage Association (with sister city Saint-Germain-en-Laye, in France) in Winchester, Massachusetts, where he resides. Join us for a special conversation between award-winning journalist Shoshana Walter and bestselling and award-winning author Barbara Kingsolver as they chat about Walter’s book Rehab: An American Scandal. In this work, Walter, a Pulitzer finalist, exposes the country’s failed response to the opioid crisis, and the malfeasance, corruption, and snake oil which blight the drug rehabilitation industry. Today, more people have access to treatment than ever before. So why isn’t it working? The answer is that in America—where anyone can get addicted—only certain people get a real chance to recover. Despite record numbers of overdose deaths, our default response is still to punish, while rehabs across the United States fail to incorporate scientifically proven strategies and exploit patients.  In this book, you’ll find the stories of four people who represent the failures of the rehab-industrial complex, and the ways our treatment system often prevents recovery. April is a black mom in Philadelphia, who witnessed firsthand how the government’s punitive response to the crack epidemic impeded her mother’s recovery—and then her own. Chris, a young middle-class white man from Louisiana, received more opportunities in his addiction than April, including the chance to go to treatment instead of prison. Yet the only program the judge permitted was one that forced him to perform unpaid back-breaking labor at for-profit companies. Wendy is a mother from a wealthy suburb of Los Angeles, whose son died in a sober living home. She began investigating for-profit treatment programs—yet law enforcement and regulators routinely ignored her warnings, allowing rehab patients to die, again and again. Larry is a surgeon who himself struggled with addiction, and would eventually become one of the first Suboxone prescribers in the nation, drawing the scrutiny of the Drug Enforcement Administration.  Registration is required. Her reporting has been honored as a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize and Selden Ring, and she has won the Knight Award for Public Service, the Edward R. She started her work on the treatment system at The Center for Investigative Reporting, where her work appeared in The New York Times Magazine, in newspapers, and on NPR stations across the country. She is based in Oakland, California. About the Guest Host:  Barbara Ellen Kingsolver is a Pulitzer Prize-winning American novelist, essayist, and poet. Her widely known works include The Poisonwood Bible, the tale of a missionary family in the Congo, and Animal, Vegetable, Miracle, a nonfiction account of her family's attempts to eat locally. In 2023, she was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction for the novel Demon Copperhead. Her work often focuses on topics such as social justice, biodiversity, and the interaction between humans and their communities and environments. **This workshop will take place at the Munroe Center for the Arts, 1403 Mass Ave, Lexington A Madhubani art workshop focused on painting a pot of colors for Holi would be a joyful and culturally rich experience. Madhubani art is a vibrant and intricate form of painting characterized by bold colors, detailed patterns, and rich symbolism. This ancient hand-painting tradition has been passed down through generations and originated in the Mithila region of Bihar, India. Its themes draw inspiration from festivals, rituals, nature, community life, and mythology within Indian culture. To explore this art form in celebration of Holi, the Cary Library and IAL teams have organized a Madhubani Art Workshop featuring a colorful gulal (color) pot with an award-winning artist Raksha Soni. In Madhubani tradition, Holi colors symbolize joy, renewal and unity. The pot overflowing with vibrant hues represents abundance, celebration, and the spirit of togetherness that defines the festival of colors. About Raksha Soni Raksha Soni is a multidisciplinary visual artist and educator whose work has been showcased in galleries, museums, and civic spaces throughout New England, including Boston City Hall, Worcester Art Museum, and the Lowell Folk Festival. Her art bridges traditional Indian folk forms such as Madhubani and Kalamkari with expressive landscapes inspired by memory and heritage. Influenced by Indian mythology and cultural storytelling, her paintings carry layered meaning and narrative richness. Through teaching both children and adults, she nurtures creativity and cultural appreciation. **RESCHEDULED - This event was rescheduled from March 20th Bill Gette has led many travel adventures to West Texas, the area along the Rio Grande River from El Paso to Big Bend National Park. Much of this area is Chihuanhuan Desert. Annually, the region receives only 9.3 inches of rain (compared to 50 inches in Massachusetts). Most people think of deserts as barren landscapes with little wildlife. In fact, deserts are teeming with life, and the Chihunhuan Desert is considered one of the most biologically diverse. During his PowerPoint presentation, Bill will take you on a tour of West Texas with stops at an urban landscape in El Paso, Lake Balmorhea, the Davis Mountains, and Big Bend National Park. In each of these locations, Bill will show you the impact that available water and elevation have on the diversity of life.  At Rio Bosque Wetlands Park in El Paso, Bill will show you the many species of water birds that flock to the wetlands created by outflow from a wastewater treatment facility. Black-necked Stilts, American Avocets, Wilson’s Phalaropes, Northern Shovelers, and Cinnamon Teal are commonly seen there. At Lake Balmorhea, Bill will show you not only water birds but also species typical of the surrounding desert scrub, including Black-tailed Jackrabbit, Desert Cottontail, and Pyrrhuloxia. In the “sky islands” of the Davis Mountains, he will show you how increases in elevation transform desert scrub into grasslands and then in mixed forests of conifers and hardwoods. Bill will conclude his talk with a virtual tour of Big Bend National Park. You will see the beautiful desert landscape forged by volcanic activity, visit Santa Elena Canyon carved by the Rio Grande River, and hike through the caldera of an extinct volcano and high into the Chisos Mountains. We had such a wonderful conversation with Elizabeth back in October, we just had to have her back! As we learned, the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising is one of the most storied events of the Holocaust, yet previous accounts of which have almost entirely focused on its male participants. In The Girl Bandits of the Warsaw Ghetto: The True Story of Five Courageous Young Women Who Sparked an Uprising, Holocaust historian Elizabeth Hyman introduces five young, courageous Polish Jewish women—known as “the girls” by the leadership of the resistance and “bandits” by their Nazi oppressors—who were central to the Jewish resistance as fighters, commanders, couriers, and smugglers. This time, we'll take a deeper dive into our women heroes - what was their motivation, how did they succeed in their endeavors, what was the impact of their work? Learn about: Zivia Lubetkin, the most senior female member of the Jewish Fighting Organization Command Staff in Warsaw and a reluctant legend in her own time, who was immortalized by her code name, "Celina". Vladka Meed, who smuggled dynamite into and illegal literature out of the Warsaw Ghetto in preparation for the uprising. Dr. Idina “Inka” Blady-Schweiger, a young medical student who became a reluctant angel of mercy. Tema Schneiderman, a tall, beautiful and fearless young woman who volunteered for smuggling and rescue missions across Nazi-occupied Eastern Europe. Tossia Altman, a heroic courier with a poetic soul, who helped bring arms into the Warsaw Ghetto, fought in the Uprising, and ferried communiques to the outside world. Interspersed with the stories of other Jewish women who resisted, The Girl Bandits of the Warsaw Ghetto rescues these women from the shadows of time, bringing to light their resilience, bravery, and cunning in the face of unspeakable hardship—inspiring stories of courage, daring, and resistance that must never be forgotten. About Elizabeth:  The granddaughter and great-granddaughter of Polish Jews who fled their homeland in 1939 and ultimately made their way, as refugees, to the United States, I earned dual master’s degrees in History and Library Science from the University of Maryland-College Park, and have written the history blog, “HISTORICITY (was already taken,” since 2011. I live in New Paltz, New York. Each biweekly meeting is facilitated by Deborah Hope, MBA, PCIC, an experienced executive career coach. Deborah is a former Fortune 500 executive, investment banker and entrepreneur. She transitioned to executive coaching over 12 years ago. Deborah has coached with Harvard Business School Executive Education programs and the Massachusetts Conference for Women. She has been trained or certified in a variety of coaching models and assessment tools. Deborah has facilitated 50+ job seekers networking groups since 2016.  This week's topic (April 1) is Cover Letters. Registration is required. This will be our last watercolor class with Lea Baecksteiner. This last session will be focused on seeing your watercolor growth over the past couple years of classes. We will not be doing any painting this session. Please bring your most recent painting and your oldest watercolor painting, either from class with Lea or from another time.  Registration is required. Participants may only register for one class per month. Spaces are limited. If you are unable to attend, please cancel your reservation to release your spot. The workshops will be taught by artist Lea Baecksteiner. Lea is an artist and illustrator with a Masters in Fine Arts and Illustration from the Neue Kunst Schule in Basel, Switzerland. Originally from Switzerland, she now lives and works in the greater Boston area. Her range of artistic media includes oil, gouache, watercolor, ink, and digital painting. In addition to her work as a fine artists, Lea provides illustrations for books, magazines, and printed materials. Her style has been described as playful, minimalist, and well-proportioned.
