Senbazaru is a collection of 1,000 origami cranes skillfully strung together to create a charming display.    In Japanese culture, the crane symbolizes longevity, happiness, good fortune, and is believed to grant the folder’s wish! We invite the community to help us fold 1000 origami cranes and contribute to our collective wish for hope, health, and healing. This art project will be on display in the library upon completion. Join us as we fold 1000 cranes!  Visit the table under the bulletin board near the Reference Desk and pick a piece of origami paper. Who says a salad needs to be green? Join us at the Lexington farmers' market for a scavenger hunt for ingredients to make a colorful salad. Using all of their senses, and some math skills, kids will be given cash and asked to shop in teams. They report back to our tent with the ingredients and learn how to make a tasty salad and a dressing. This event will occur rain or shine so dress accordingly. A caretaker/adult must remain on site at the market while the class is in session. Kids will be encouraged to taste test some ingredients they have purchased. Each child must be registered individually for this class. If your child becomes unable to attend this program, please notify the library as soon as possible. These workshops are intended for adults 60+. All materials for the class will be provided. The workshops will be taught by artist Lea Baecksteiner. Lea is an artist and illustrator with a Masters in Fine Arts and Illustration from the Neue Kunst Schule in Basel, Switzerland. Originally from Switzerland, she now lives and works in the greater Boston area. Her range of artistic media includes oil, gouache, watercolor, ink, and digital painting. In addition to her work as a fine artists, Lea provides illustrations for books, magazines, and printed materials. Her style has been described as playful, minimalist, and well-proportioned. Just like at our monthly Cookbook Club, participants are encouraged to prepare a recipe from Tammy’s new book “New England Brunch” before the program, to bring and share with the group to taste. Tammy will talk about seasonal eating and some background on the history of New England brunch dishes, as well as the contributions of several important immigrant groups. If you don’t want to prepare anything, that’s okay! All are welcome to join for the conversation, though only participants who bring prepared recipes may partake in eating the food. We have reserved a copy at the Circulation Desk for patrons to look through.  Registration is required. Tammy Donroe Inman is the award-winning author and photographer of New England Brunch and New England Desserts. She also wrote Wintersweet: Seasonal Desserts to Warm the Home, which was praised by the Wall Street Journal, USA Today, Library Journal, and Publisher’s Weekly. A trained chef and cooking instructor, she got her start testing recipes for Cook's Illustrated magazine and the TV show America's Test Kitchen. After that, she worked as an editor for Boston magazine. She’s also written for the Boston Globe, Fine Cooking, and Yankee Magazine. It reminds you of something in the genes — nature, or the longing for nature.”  – Piet Oudolf Join us for a screening of the documentary, Five Seasons: The Gardens of Piet Oudolf. Revolutionary landscape designer Piet Oudolf is known for designing public works like New York City’s popular High Line and the Lurie Garden in Chicago’s Millennium Park that redefine our conception of gardens as works of art in themselves. This gorgeous, meditative documentary immerses viewers in his work, taking us inside Oudolf’s creative process. From his aesthetic theories to his strikingly abstract sketches to the ecological implications of his ideas, the film poetically reveals how Oudolf upends conventional notions of nature, public space, and, ultimately, beauty itself.  A film by Thomas Piper. Run time is 75 mins. Attendance is on a first-come basis. Piet Oudolf was born in 1944 in Haarlem, Netherlands. Since 1982, he has lived and worked in Hummelo, a tiny village in east Netherlands, where he started a nursery with his wife Anja, to grow perennials. His garden has since become renowned for its radical approach and ideas about planting design. Oudolf also co-founded Future Plants, a company specializing in selecting, growing, breeding and protecting plants for landscaping and public areas. Oudolf`s recent projects include No. 5 Culture Chanel, Paris, France; The High Line, New York NY; Lurie Garden, Millennium Park, Chicago IL; Serpentine Gallery, London, England, and the Venice Biennale, Venice, Italy. Oudolf is also a successful author, having co-written numerous books such as; “Planting: A New Perspective” (2013); “Landscapes in Landscapes” (2011); “Gardening with Grasses” (1998); “Designing with Plants and Planting Design” (1999); “Dream Plants for the Natural Garden” (2000); “Planting the Natural Garden” (2003), and “Planting Design: Gardens in Time and Space” (2005). In his 35-year career, Oudolf has achieved international acclaim, and has recently been awarded an Honorary Fellowship from RIBA for developing radical ideas in Planting Design (2012) and the Prince Bernhard Cultural Foundation Award (2013) Thomas Piper is an award-winning non-fiction filmmaker, specializing in documenting the contemporary arts. He has directed, photographed and edited over 30 films on subjects including the visual artists Pablo Picasso, Ellsworth Kelly, Sol LeWitt, Alex Katz, and Kiki Smith; architects including Frank Lloyd Wright, Peter Eisenman, Jeanne Gang, Diller Scofidio + Renfro, Thom Mayne, Jean Nouvel, and Steven Holl; and the writer James Salter. Thousands of smart and experienced workers can't land a job, because of misguided perceptions and biases against mature job seekers. During this session Ed Lawrence reveals the ageism presentation that he showed recently to a group of coaches and resume writers in Chicago. This presentation was aimed not at job seekers, but at the people whose job is to help job seekers. Ed will show you the survey results that reveal whether or not the coaches & writers make a difference and show you the suggestions he gave to the professional audience for better assisting job seekers. Ed Lawrence is the founder and principal of Getstart-ed, through which he offers practical job-search assistance, résumé-writing services, and assessments to help people gain meaningful employment or transition to a new career. He is a Certified Professional Résumé Writer, Certified Student Career Coach, National Certified Online Profile Expert (NCOPE), and is certified in Myers-Briggs (MBTI), DISC, the Strong Interest Inventory, and Skillscan.
