**OFFSITE LOCATION** This program will be presented at the Community Center, 39 Marrett Rd, Lexington. This workshop uses jewelry making as a form of art therapy. Our instructor refers to this as “Bead Therapy”. The materials used are semi-precious stones and other natural jewelry materials. Semi-precious stones have been appreciated for generations for their unique beauty and healing and grounding properties. Bead Therapy is very interactive and meditative. It gives the participants the creative power to express how they feel and allows them to see how their feelings look in the form of art they produced. This workshop will teach the basics of beaded jewelry making and the difference between semi-precious stones and precious stones. The goal of Bead Therapy is to create a safe space for self-expression to create a piece of art that represents the emotions of the creator. Each participant will keep all the pieces they make.  Registration is required.  ZMakesBeads L.L.C. is a Black and veteran-owned small jewelry business. I officially started in 2018 but began conceptualizing over ten years ago when I started selling jewelry. In my art, I use semi-precious stones and other natural materials to create unique necklaces, bracelets, and chokers. When someone buys one of my pieces, they are getting “a piece of me, worn by you” which is my brand’s tagline and rooted in my culture. When a customer purchases and wears a ZMakesBeads piece, they receive original designs that have come about from my artistic view on life, inspiration from daily experiences, and a sense of togetherness. Through my business, I can transmit the essence of collective beauty that I experience in others through jewelry crafting. About the Presenters: Brian Gratwicke is a conservation biologist and leads the amphibian conservation programs at the Smithsonian's National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute. Brian’s focus is building capacity to conserve amphibians in Appalachia and Panama, developing outreach and educational programs and exhibits to build public support for amphibian conservation, and research to develop tools to reintroduce amphibians back into the wild. At SCBI, Brian collaborates with Panamanian conservation biologists and zoo partners to build an ex-situ amphibian facility in Panama. The Panama Amphibian Rescue and Conservation Project based at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute in Gamboa maintains and grows captive assurance populations of species most heavily affected by the deadly amphibian chytrid fungus. One major research focus is developing applied solutions for the amphibian chytrid fungus, including research into the area of beneficial skin bacteria and identifying genetic traits associated with resistance to the disease. He also conducts research into emerging diseases and the effects of climate change on Appalachian salamanders. Dr. Gina Della Togna is a researcher and conservationist, currently serving as the Executive Director of the Amphibian Survival Alliance and a Research Associate at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute. Dr. Della Togna earned her Ph.D. in Biological Sciences, with a specialization in Molecular and Cell Biology, from the University of Maryland, USA. Her groundbreaking research focuses on the reproductive biology of amphibians and the development of Assisted Reproductive Technologies for endangered species facing challenges in reproduction. As the co-Chair of the IUCN SSC Amphibian Specialist Group ARTs and Biobanking working group since 2017 and co-author of the Amphibian Conservation Action Plan (ACAP), Dr. Della Togna plays a vital role in advancing conservation efforts for amphibian species worldwide. Additionally, she is part of the IUCN SSC ASG Atelopus Task Force and member of the Atelopus Survival Initiative, co-chairing the Ex Situ Working Group. Dr. Della Togna serves on the Advisory Board of the Mohamed bin Zayed Species Conservation Fund, further showcasing her commitment to species preservation. Her dedication to amphibian conservation extends to her involvement in global, regional, and local initiatives, where she fosters collaborations and spearheads innovative projects to safeguard amphibian populations. Her expertise and passion have made her a leading figure in the field of conservation biology, inspiring positive change for the future of amphibians and their ecosystems. Kids Cooking Green joins us for another virtual cooking class for teens! This time, we will be making Lemon Blueberry Muffins. Cary Library will provide all the ingredients you need to participate in this program. Registered participants will receive an email with instructions on picking up their ingredient supply kit. The Zoom link will be sent to all participants the morning of the program. Our teen classes with KCG are set up as hands-on programs for the participating teens. (No adult supervision specifically needed.) Space in this program is limited. Please notify the library ASAP if, after registering, you are unable to attend this program. KCG programs are very popular and we often have a wait list of interested teens. Repeated 'no-shows' without notification may require us to prohibit you from registering for future program. When you sign up, you are registered for the entire session (Meeting Dates: 4/9, 4/23, 5/7, 5/21, & 6/4). Please register only if you can attend all sessions. Lexington has over 1,400 acres of conservation land. These properties provide many benefits: trails for hiking and nature study, scenic vistas, wildlife habitat, flood control, and water quality protection, to name just a few. Lexington is the envy of many towns, particularly inside the 128 belt, for the breadth of its holdings. This didn’t happen by accident, but was the result of hard work by far-sighted, public-minded individuals decades ago. Charlie will discuss the history of the town’s efforts to preserve its environment and natural heritage through conservation land acquisition, and will offer brief profiles of some of the more interesting acquisition projects. Registration is required. Charlie Wyman has served as both the town’s Conservation Administrator (1984-88) and a Conservation Commissioner (2009-2012). Most of his working career was as a project manager for land acquisition projects, first for The Trustees of Reservations and later Mass Audubon. Retired since 2016, he has served on the town’s Sustainable Lexington Committee and currently is chair of the Conservation Commission’s Land Acquisition Subcommittee in addition to helping lead Lexington Living Landscapes. Starting in early March, Mourning Cloak Butterflies begin emerging from hibernation and start flying along forest lanes and woodland edges. By late March, tiny Spring Azures appear. Cabbage Whites and Black Swallowtails start flying over fields and visiting gardens by mid-April. Throughout the summer, many more species appear. During his PowerPoint presentation, Bill Gette will show his colorful photographs of 40 species of New England butterflies and discuss their life histories, flight months, and host plants. Bill will conclude his talk with a discussion of one of our best-known butterflies, Monarch. The Monarch’s life history and migration feats are amazing. Registration is required. Bill Gette began leading area, domestic U.S., and international travel programs for Mass Audubon in 1986. Since then, he has traveled to all seven continents leading trips, studying nature, and photographing wildlife. He joined Mass Audubon full time in 1996 as the Founding Director of the Joppa Flats Education Center in Newburyport.  At Joppa Flats, Bill developed the Birder Certificate Program - a college level ornithology course; developed and taught the Certificate Program in Bird Ecology to train naturalist guides in Belize; coordinated the Center’s International Intern Program, and operated the Joppa Flats Bird Banding Station on the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge for over 20 years. Bill retired from Mass Audubon in 2016, but remains very active teaching workshops. He is the Past-President of the Friends of Parker River National Wildlife Refuge and current Board member. Bill enjoys sharing his photographs and travel experiences through his PowerPoint presentations.
