Join us for our monthly Forget Me Not Memory Cafe! This event was created to provide special time and a private space for caregivers and their person to attend together. Come for a safe, calm space and enjoy a variety of activities that will be diffenrent each month.  Activities could include live music, or games.  Support and snacks provided! Celebrate World Ocean Day! Join us for an exciting presentation with David Robinson, Director and Chief Archaeologist for the Massachusetts Board of Underwater Archaeological Resources (BUAR) to discover the hidden world below the waters of Massachusetts. An Uncommon Wealth: Massachusetts's Underwater Archaeological Resources Every day we see Massachusetts’ maritime heritage on land, in the form of lighthouses and the homes of ship’s captains, and even as floating examples such as the U.S.S. Constitution and the Schooner Ernestina. However, there is a wealth of heritage most of us never see lying under the waters of ocean, lakes, and rivers of our state. These resources span the breadth of human occupation of Massachusetts. This presentation is an overview of our diverse submerged heritage and the state agency that protects it. David Robinson, Director and Chief Archaeologist of the BUAR, will provide an overview of the range of different types of underwater archaeological resources that are present in the coastal (and inland) waters of Massachusetts and the challenges and opportunities associated with managing these resources. A portion of the presentation will focus on BUAR's current efforts to assess the vulnerability of coastal cultural resources from the growing threat of erosion caused by climate change-induced sea level rise along the Massachusetts shoreline, and on opportunities for becoming involved in a citizen-science response to this threat.        In addition to his work with BUAR since 2019, David has conducted applied underwater archaeological research over the past 34 years throughout New England and in the Mid-Atlantic, the Southeast, the Gulf of Mexico, the Great Lakes, Lake Champlain, and Scandinavia. Prior to joining BUAR in 2019, he was a marine archaeologist at the University of Rhode Island's Graduate School of Oceanography and president of the submerged cultural resources management firm, David S. Robinson & Associates, Inc. He holds a Master’s degree from the world’s first graduate program in underwater archaeology – the Nautical Archaeology Program at Texas A&M University. The Massachusetts Board of Underwater Archaeological Resources (BUAR) is the sole trustee of the Commonwealth's underwater heritage, promoting and protecting the public's interests in these resources for recreational, economic, environmental, and historical purposes. BUAR encourages the discovery and reporting, as well as the preservation and protection, of underwater archaeological resources located in the inland and coastal waters of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
