Have you ever wanted to help build community, disrupt isolation and share joy & hope through the written word? Join us & year round islander, Margaret Hewitt, as we participate in a letter writing party as part of Letters Against Isolation, an organization seeking to fight senior loneliness, one letter at a time. Materials for letter writing will be provided along with light beverages.About this organization: Hi! We are Shreya and Saffron. At the start of the pandemic we did our best to support our isolated and lonely grandparents by calling them every day.We realized that without visitors or the ability to interact with the wider world, many senior citizens were also facing increased isolation. Senior loneliness is a well-documented issue and has effects not only on seniors’ mental health but on their physical health as well. We believed that we could do something to help this situation and decided to spread joy by sending handwritten letters to residents of assisted living facilities and nursing homes. The demand for letters quickly outpaced us, and Letters Against Isolation was born! Our organization has since expanded to serve thousands of seniors in the US, Canada, the UK and Australia.Mission Statement: We fight senior loneliness one letter at a time. Through handwritten messages of love, hope, and joy, our volunteer community brings seniors connection and improves their mental and physical health.FREE ADMISSION

Feminist philosopher Dr. Lindsey Stewart’s book, The Conjuring of America: Mojos, Mermaids, Medicine, and 400 Years of Black Women’s Magic, tells the stories of Negro Mammies of slavery; the Voodoo Queens and Blues Women of Reconstruction; and the Granny Midwives and textile weavers of the Jim Crow era. These women, in secrecy and subterfuge, courageously and devotedly continued their practices and worship for centuries and passed down their traditions. This book is a love letter to the real magic Black women used, their herbs, food, textiles, song, and dance, used to sow rebellion, freedom, and hope. Thursday, February 12th at 2 PM ET via digital live-stream in partnership with the Nantucket Atheneum.

Join us for an evening of music with Mitch Blake followed by a reprise of "The Ballad of Sheila and Roy"  an Arcadian Pas de Deux, a very short musical play starring Island actors Pam Murphy and Pete Sendelbach. Mitch started playing guitar in college and is mostly self-taught. He has performed traditional folk music and his own works in various venues in New England over the years. This presentation is a collection of his contemporary compositions which are mostly love songs of one sort or another. Pam Murphy is Executive Director of Marine Mammal Alliance Nantucket. When not rescuing seals and dolphins, she performs for Theatre Workshop of Nantucket, Nantucket Short Play Group and Armchair Theater. Pete Sendelbach is a local actor with TWN, Nantucket Short Play Group (NSPG) and Armchair Theater.
