Authors Melanie Kaplan (Lab Dog: A Beagle and His Human Investigate the Surprising World of Animal Research) and E.B. Bartels (Good Grief: On Loving Pets, Here and Hereafter) will discuss their new books on important topics of interest to pet owners and animal lovers. In Lab Dog, author Melanie Kaplan investigates the breeding and use of beagles for biomedical research, drug and product testing, and education. She takes readers on a journey, peeking behind laboratory doors and visiting with researchers, activists, ethicists, veterinarians, lawmakers, and innovators. Along the way, she finds thoughtful and caring humans on all sides of the debate, explores promising developments in nonanimal testing, and discovers puzzle pieces from her own beagle's past. Equal parts journalism and love story, Lab Dog offers a nuanced view on our relationship with a species that we both love and exploit, and a reason to hope for a better future for all. Kaplan is a longtime independent journalist whose travel and science writing has appeared in The Atlantic, the Washington Post, the Wall Street Journal, and National Parks magazine. In Good Grief, author E.B. Bartels has had a lot of pets—dogs, birds, fish, tortoises. As varied a bunch as they are, they’ve taught her one universal truth: to own a pet is to love a pet, and to own a pet is also—with rare exception—to lose that pet in time. But while we have codified traditions to mark the passing of our fellow humans, most cultures don’t have the same for pets. Bartels takes us from Massachusetts to Japan, from ancient Egypt to the modern era, in search of the good pet death. We meet veterinarians, archaeologists, ministers, and more, offering an idiosyncratic, inspiring array of rituals -- from the traditional (scattering ashes, commissioning a portrait), to the grand (funereal processions, mausoleums), to the unexpected (taxidermy, cloning). The central lesson: there is no best practice when it comes to mourning your pet, except to care for them in death as you did in life, and find the space to participate in their end as fully as you can. Bartels is a nonfiction writer, a teacher, an editor, and a former bookseller with an MFA from Columbia. Tai Chi at the Norwell Public Library Tai chi has been proven through medical studies to benefit the body in many tangible ways. The slow graceful movements help reduce the risk of falling & ease arthritic joint pain. Incorporating mindful breathing & exercise techniques help to bring a sense of calmness to our minds, enhances our focus and develops a greater sense of self-awareness. Ongoing classes will be held on Tuesday mornings from 11:00 am – 12 :00 noon in the NPL’s Meeting Room. Beginners of all ages & abilities are welcome. Wear loose comfortable clothing. The instructor, Maria Sestina is an RN with a holistic health focus. She is a vitalist, believing in the wisdom of the body & our innate ability to maximize our own health. She is a 500-hour certified tai chi/qigong instructor. Maria has also obtained her certification as a “Magical Beginnings/Enchanted Lives” instructor at Deepak Chopra’s Center of Well Being in La Jolla, California. Registration is required. This Library program is funded by the Friends of the Norwell Public Library. Honoring the battles of King Philip’s War after 350 years (1676). Celebrating 300 years of the Jacobs Farmhouse (1726). Saluting 250 years America (1776). Join the Norwell Historical Society for their 2026 kick-off event! Historian Stephen O’Neill will showcase 10 items that speak to this historic year. Stories about the Revolutionary War, the Jacobs Farmhouse, and King Philip’s War will be told through artifacts in the Society’s collection.  Stephen O'Neill is a public historian, auth0r, curator, and educator with over thirty years of experience. He is currently the Director of the Dyer Memorial Library in Abington and Executive Director of the Hanover Historical Society. **PLEASE NOTE THIS IS A VIRTUAL PROGRAM THAT WILL TAKE PLACE VIA ZOOM. Registrants will receive a link to access the Zoom Webinar via email.** You know we love our Lighthouse talks and we're really excited about this one! Boston Light – the first established Light Station in colonial America – began lighting the way for safe navigation into the fledging maritime port of Boston in 1716. The Fresnel Lens in the lantern room and fog signal apparatus situated on Little Brewster Island at the entrance to Boston Harbor continues as an active Coast Guard maintained aid-to-navigation, today. However, its notoriety in the maritime community as the “the last manned Coast Guard Light Station” in the country has come to closure with the retirement of Sally Snowman, its 70th keeper. A power-point presentation provide photos of Boston Light’s 307 years of history and few photo anecdotes of Sally’s experiences as a 21st Century Keeper. We are also thrilled to welcome Jeremy D'Entremont to the conversation!
