Join Great Barrington Land Conservancy for a silent group stroll along the Housatonic in the fresh air, before the heat of the day. In this early hour, we can hear the birdsong and the sounds of the river and, in the quiet, may glimpse some wildlife. It’s a slow, mindful walk lasting about an hour. Afterwards, those who would like to, can gather at the Co-op for coffee/tea and conversation before beginning the rest of your day. The Leader of the walk is Sharon Coleman, local resident and member of the Great Barrington Land Conservancy. Meet 5 minutes before 7:00am at the trailhead of the Riverfront trail next to the Railroad Street Youth Project building on Bridge St. in Great Barrington. No registration necessary. Volunteers Needed! Help keep Pittsfield’s rain gardens beautiful! Pittsfield has 10 rain gardens on North Street with a few more scattered throughout the city. These rain gardens allow the stormwater from the streets and sidewalks to infiltrate and be cleaned before en......More

Volunteers Needed! Help keep Pittsfield’s rain gardens beautiful! Pittsfield has 10 rain gardens on North Street with a few more scattered throughout the city. These rain gardens allow the stormwater from the streets and sidewalks to infiltrate and be cleaned before entering the storm drain system. Storm drains direct stormwater to the nearest river or lake, which is why it’s so important they remain clear and free of litter! Join this weekly volunteer work party on Wednesday evenings from 5:00 to 6:30 PM. Volunteers will remove trash and sediment, replace plants and removes weeds, and generally maintain the gardens. Tools and bags will be provided just bring yourself and work gloves. The meeting place changes from week to week depending on the gardens’ needs. Have you been wondering how the Hoosic River Watershed Association (HooRWA) collects water samples in the North Adams flood chutes to test for e.coli? Stop by the Brown Street Bridge in North Adams for a demonstration of collection technique and learn what is being observed for bacterial load this year in the flood chutes. Be a citizen scientist.
