The Friends of the Thomas Crane Public Library invite current members and the public to join them at their Annual Meeting. The meeting will begin at 6:30 PM, followed by special guest speaker Linda Coombs, author and historian from the Wampanoag Tribe of Aquinnah on Martha’s Vineyard, at 7 PM. Most recently, she’s published Colonization and the Wampanoag Story, a children's book about the discovery of America as told from the perspective of the New England Indigenous Nations. The Friends of TCPL are a nonprofit volunteer group dedicated to raising funds and awareness for the library. Find out more and learn how to donate here. Linda Coombs Linda Coombs (Aquinnah Wampanoag) began her museum career in an internship at the Boston Children’s Museum, and later working there in the Native American Program.  She and her colleague Paulla Dove Jennings (Narragansett) wrote children’s books for a museum series highlighting aspects of southern New England tribal cultures. Coombs also worked for 30 years in the Wampanoag Indigenous Program (WIP) of Plimoth Plantation, including 15 years as WIP’s Associate Director; and 9 years at the Aquinnah Cultural Center.  Presently she does independent museum consulting and cultural presentations. Colonization and the Wampanoag Story Until now, you’ve only heard one side of the story: the “discovery” of America told by Christopher Columbus, the Pilgrims, and the Colonists. Here’s the true story of America from the Indigenous perspective. When you think about the beginning of the American story, what comes to mind? Three ships in 1492, or perhaps buckled hats and shoes stepping off of the Mayflower, ready to start a new country. But the truth is, Christopher Columbus, the Pilgrims, and the Colonists didn’t arrive to a vast, empty land ready to be developed. They arrived to find people and communities living in harmony with the land they had inhabited for thousands of years, and they quickly disrupted everything they saw. From its “discovery” by Europeans to the first Thanksgiving, the story of America’s earliest days has been carefully misrepresented. Are you interested in: practicing your English conversation skills? learning about Quincy Center? meeting new people? Please join us for Walk and Talk! Led by 2 volunteer teachers, the walks start at the Quincy Library and follow different routes around Quincy Center (a maximum distance of 2 miles, walked at a slow pace). The walks are a great opportunity for English Language Learners to meet new people, enjoy casual conversation and learn about the many interesting places in Quincy Center! Longtime Quincy community members who are interested in meeting people from other cultures are very welcome to join, as well. Meet in front of the library (on Washington Street) at 10:00 AM. The group leaves the library at 10:15 AM so be sure to arrive by then! Other information: This is a drop-in event. Registration is not required. On cold or rainy days, the walk may be canceled. You can receive legal reference assistance, borrow books, and use print and electronic resources. This “Ask a Law Librarian” program is designed to provide the community with virtual access to many of these services. Join us in support of Quincy's own Prison Book Program (PBP) for a special movie matinee featuring In Their Shoes: Unheard Stories of Reentry and Recovery (2019). PBP is a nonprofit organization providing free books and reading materials to incarcerated individuals across the United States, Guam, and Puerto Rico. As an approved book vendor for over 1,000 prisons and jails, PBP is committed to the transformative power of reading. Have you ever wandered through the woods and wondered who had been there before you? In Massachusetts, many parks and trails have been carved out of historical sites. Author Alison O’Leary, an award-winning journalist and coauthor of the Appalachian Mountain Club’s guidebook, Best Day Hikes Near Boston, shares her favorites through this hour-long program. Using maps and historic photos, she describes several day trip destinations with historical significance and interesting features. Special effort is made to include varying levels of difficulty (flat and easy to steep and challenging) and variety of scenery. These sites include: • A former rubber factory overlooked in the woods; • Contributions of the Roosevelt-era Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC); • Tales of interesting local residents; • Sites of former grand estates (and tales of the owners). Are you interested in: practicing your English conversation skills? learning about Quincy Center? meeting new people? Please join us for Walk and Talk! Led by 2 volunteer teachers, the walks start at the Quincy Library and follow different routes around Quincy Center (a maximum distance of 2 miles, walked at a slow pace). The walks are a great opportunity for English Language Learners to meet new people, enjoy casual conversation and learn about the many interesting places in Quincy Center! Longtime Quincy community members who are interested in meeting people from other cultures are very welcome to join, as well. Meet in front of the library (on Washington Street) at 10:00 AM. The group leaves the library at 10:15 AM so be sure to arrive by then! Other information: This is a drop-in event. Registration is not required. On cold or rainy days, the walk may be canceled. ***This event was originally scheduled for May 5th, but will now be held on May 15th.*** We are excited to have Sean Kent, Arts and Nature Education Manager at Mass Audubon, lead a nature and bird walk at Passanagest Park and Broad Meadow Marsh. May is a perfect time to observe returning migratory birds. The walk will be approximately 1.5 in length on trails and will be between 1 and 1.5 hours long. Please park at 60 Murphy Memorial Dr, Quincy, MA 02169 - we will meet at the back of the arena where the trail starts at 10:30. Registration is required for this offsite event.  Sean Kent is the Arts and Nature Education Manager for Mass Audubon , where he focuses on connecting people to nature by creating and experiencing art. Sean has over 25 years of experience in ecological research and environmental and art education. Sean is a field biologist, naturalist, and an accomplished photographer, who has conducted research on the monarch butterfly, native plant species, and wild bees in Massachusetts - Boston Harbor Islands, Elizabeth Islands (Naushon, Cutthunk, and Penikese), Belize, New Mexico, and Arizona. Sean has a M.S. in Biology from Northeastern University and a B.A. in Biology from the College of the Holy Cross. In the working class city of Worcester, Massachusetts, Christine fights to regain custody of her young children while grappling with a traumatic past, and battling stigma from the very systems that are designed to help her. Bridget, who found recovery while in prison, now facilitates peer-led support meetings for women. On the frontlines, recovery coaches Janis and Rebecca navigate the city’s toughest corners offering support and trying to save lives. DOVE (Domestic Violence Ended) attorneys will be on-site at the Quincy Public Library to talk with people who have experienced abuse by an intimate partner and have legal questions about divorce, custody, child support, restraining orders, immigration or other related legal issues. DOVE attorneys will be able to provide general legal information, answer questions, and help with referrals for other services like counseling and safety planning. We can also answer questions about our services for those who have friends or family members who might be facing domestic violence. We can offer telephone interpretation for most languages. All of DOVE’s services are free and completely confidential. DOVE is a non-profit organization that provides supportive services to domestic violence survivors and their families, including legal advice and advocacy, one-on-one counseling, safety planning, support groups, education, and emergency shelter. DOVE is located in Quincy, and serves survivors across Norfolk County.
