Join us to swap your craft supplies!  Starting on Wednesday, June 4, through Friday, June 6, you can bring in supplies for a swap and get an "early bird" ticket to enter the swap early (2:00 - 2:30). Donation Guidelines: Bring all craft swap/gift wrap donations to the 1st Floor Help Desk, 6/4 - 6/6, any time the library is open. On Saturday, 6/7, donations will ONLY be accepted at the door between 2pm and 4pm. Follow the "friend rule": if you wouldn't give the donation to your friend, don't bring it to the swap! Nearly empty bottles of paint, short bits of rope or yarn, fabric scraps less than 8" square, etc., will not be accepted for the swap. Sets or kits do not need to be complete, but should still contain usable quantities of what materials there are. Please be thoughtful about the quantities you donate and take from the swap; it's okay to donate more than you take or take more than you donate, but we want everyone to have a chance to find something fun! Join us as author and historian Stephen Puleo discusses his book American Treasures, which explores the secret efforts to save the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and the Gettysburg Address. On December 26, 1941, Secret Service Agent Harry E. Neal stood on a platform at Washington’s Union Station, watching a train chug off into the dark and feeling at once relieved and inexorably anxious. These were dire times. Hitler’s armies were plowing across Europe, seizing or destroying the Continent’s historic artifacts at will, and three weeks earlier Japan unleashed its devastating attack on Pearl Harbor. American officials now feared an enemy attack on Washington, D.C. So, President Franklin D. Roosevelt set about hiding the country’s valuables. On the train speeding away from Neal sat four plain-wrapped cases containing the documentary history of America – including the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, the Gettysburg Address – guarded by a battery of agents and bound for safekeeping in the nation’s most impenetrable hiding place. American Treasures charts the creation and little-known journeys of these priceless American documents. The Event: Celebrate Pride with us! Teens in grades 8-12 are invited to meet Mel Hammond & Teghan Hammond, authors  of the 2024 YA novel Lucy, Uncensored, and ask them questions about being a writer in this special, hybrid and live-streamed program! Teens will have the option to attend the event in person at both the Main Library and the North Quincy Library, where large screens will project the presenting authors. In person attendees will have the chance to ask questions and say hello to the authors! Attendees may also view the event from the comfort of their home, via the Zoom link provided to all registrants. This event will be recorded. Signed bookplates available while supplies last (available only to in-person attendees). If you register to view the event on your own, we will send you a link before the program. If you register to attend the program at the Main Library or the North Quincy branch, you are all set, and we will see you there! The Book: Lucy imagines college as more than a chance to party with other drama nerds and be roommates with her best friend Callie. College will be her fresh start. For the first time, she'll be able to introduce herself as Lucy to people she hasn't gone to school with since kindergarten. Plus, she happens to live an hour away from one of the most prestigious theater programs in the country. She's always dreamed of going to Central, but when she finally has a chance to visit, it's not what she imagined. While Lucy and Callie are on their campus tour, two kids from their high school make the typical transphobic comments Lucy's gotten used to in her small town. She starts to worry that her dream school might end up being High School 2.0. What if she belongs somewhere else? Somewhere that she can truly have a fresh start? The Authors: Teghan Hammond and Mel Hammond are sisters who grew up punching each other whenever they saw a P.T. Cruiser, dying their hair blue together, and fabricating a fake band in which their middle brother was (allegedly) the lead singer. Writing Lucy, Uncensored was their first time co-writing. Unless you count the summer they spent scribbling down recipes for the strangest sandwiches you’ve ever heard of, like the Tax Exemption Wrap (Teghan) and the Nail Gun Sandwich (Mel). Today, Teghan lives in northern Indiana, where she drinks excessive amounts of coffee and volunteers for LGBTQIA+ causes. When she’s not tearing down gender norms, Teghan is probably watching cartoons or gaming. Mel lives in Madison, Wisconsin, where she writes books in a rainbow-painted room. Besides writing, she loves walking in the woods and eating dairy-free ice cream. Led by 2 volunteer teachers, the walks start at the Quincy Library and follow different routes around Quincy Center (a maximum distance of 2 miles, walked at a slow pace). The walks are a great opportunity for English Language Learners to meet new people, enjoy casual conversation and learn about the many interesting places in Quincy Center! Longtime Quincy community members who are interested in meeting people from other cultures are very welcome to join, as well. Meet in front of the library (on Washington Street) at 10:00 AM. The group leaves the library at 10:15 AM so be sure to arrive by then! Other information: This is a drop-in event. Registration is not required. On cold or rainy days, the walk may be canceled. Spend an evening with us to hear excerpts from the just released novella, The Glass Garden and from her debut work, The Night Library of Sternendach: A Vampire Opera in Verse.  In a moderated talk, Levai will share the challenges of navigating stories from an idea to the page, using inspiration from the Thomas Crane Public Library in her writing, and her archaeological influence on science fiction. For our kickoff event, we're welcoming Coach Dwayne from L.I.F.E Health & Fitness to lead an outdoor bootcamp workout. Registration is not required, but encouraged! Outdoor Bootcamp – Class Description This 60-minute outdoor boot camp is designed for all fitness levels and will combine calisthenics, strength, and cardio exercises for a fun and energizing total-body workout. We’ll begin with a light warm-up that includes dynamic stretching to prepare the body for movement. The main workout will feature a mix of strength and endurance circuits followed by targeted abdominal work.
