We are so excited to welcome author Matthew Algeo to our virtual stage! He will be discussing his latest book, "New York’s Secret Subway: The Underground Genius of Alfred Beach and the Origins of Mass Transit" - a book that will captivate readers and provide historical context for today’s clashes between public interests and powerful business and political groups. Algeo tells this amazing true story in full for the first time, and although it took place more than a century ago, it will at times sound surprisingly familiar. It's guaranteed to be a fascinating conversation and we hope you can join us for it! About New York’s Secret Subway: In the nineteenth century, Manhattan’s streets were so choked with pedestrians, horses, vehicles, and vendors that a trip from City Hall to Central Park could take hours. Alfred Beach had the perfect solution: build a giant pneumatic tube underneath Broadway from the Battery to Harlem. Air pressure would shoot passengers up and down the island in clean, quiet carriages. But Beach was up against the operators of the horse-drawn streetcars and the politicians in their pay, most conspicuously William M. Tweed, the notorious “Boss” of Tammany Hall. New York’s Secret Subway: The Underground Genius of Alfred Beach and the Origins of Mass Transit tells a classic story of good versus evil, pitting the mild-mannered Beach, a visionary inventor and entrepreneur, against the oafish tyrant Tweed, the exemplar of corruption in the Gilded Age. It also tells the story of one of the most astonishing feats of engineering in American history, the surreptitious creation of the nation’s first operational subway. New York seemed destined to become the second city in the world with a comprehensive subway system, after London. Unfortunately, political lethargy and greed would conspire to deny the city a subway for another thirty years. Yet Alfred Beach still proved conclusively the feasibility of underground railways in Manhattan, and paved the way for modern mass transportation systems. About Matt: Matthew Algeo writes about interesting stuff. Or, as his mom liked to say, Matthew is an award-winning journalist and author. His latest book is New York's Secret Subway: The Underground Genius of Alfred Beach and the Origins of Mass Transit.​ He is the author of seven other books, including Harry Truman’s Excellent Adventure: The True Story of a Great American Road Trip, which the Washington Post named one of the best books of 2009. In addition to reporting and writing, Matthew has held jobs as a convenience store clerk, a Halloween costume salesman, and a hot dog vendor in a traveling circus. His current gig is hosting Morning Edition on Kansas Public Radio. Matthew holds a degree in folklore from the University of Pennsylvania. His wife, Allyson, is a retired U.S. Foreign Service officer. They have lived in Bamako, Rome, Ulan Bator, Maputo, Sarajevo, and Gaborone. We had such a wonderful conversation with Elizabeth back in October, we just had to have her back! As we learned, the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising is one of the most storied events of the Holocaust, yet previous accounts of which have almost entirely focused on its male participants. In The Girl Bandits of the Warsaw Ghetto: The True Story of Five Courageous Young Women Who Sparked an Uprising, Holocaust historian Elizabeth Hyman introduces five young, courageous Polish Jewish women—known as “the girls” by the leadership of the resistance and “bandits” by their Nazi oppressors—who were central to the Jewish resistance as fighters, commanders, couriers, and smugglers. This time, we'll take a deeper dive into our women heroes - what was their motivation, how did they succeed in their endeavors, what was the impact of their work? We can't wait for this second conversation and hope you can join us.   About the book: Zivia Lubetkin, the most senior female member of the Jewish Fighting Organization Command Staff in Warsaw and a reluctant legend in her own time, who was immortalized by her code name, "Celina". Vladka Meed, who smuggled dynamite into and illegal literature out of the Warsaw Ghetto in preparation for the uprising. Dr. Idina “Inka” Blady-Schweiger, a young medical student who became a reluctant angel of mercy. Tema Schneiderman, a tall, beautiful and fearless young woman who volunteered for smuggling and rescue missions across Nazi-occupied Eastern Europe. Tossia Altman, a heroic courier with a poetic soul, who helped bring arms into the Warsaw Ghetto, fought in the Uprising, and ferried communiques to the outside world. Interspersed with the stories of other Jewish women who resisted, The Girl Bandits of the Warsaw Ghetto rescues these women from the shadows of time, bringing to light their resilience, bravery, and cunning in the face of unspeakable hardship—inspiring stories of courage, daring, and resistance that must never be forgotten. About Elizabeth: The granddaughter and great-granddaughter of Polish Jews who fled their homeland in 1939 and ultimately made their way, as refugees, to the United States, I earned dual master’s degrees in History and Library Science from the University of Maryland-College Park, and have written the history blog, “HISTORICITY (was already taken,” since 2011. I live in New Paltz, New York. My first book, a work of narrative non-fiction titled The Girl Bandits of the Warsaw Ghetto: The True Story of Five Courageous Young Women Who Sparked an Uprising will be released by Harper Perennial in Fall, 2025. I have spoken at such events as the Heroines of the Holocaust: New Frameworks of Resistance, International Symposium at the Wagner College Holocaust Center (June 16, 2022; Talk Titled: "Voices from Beyond the Grave: Tossia Altman and Tema Schneiderman") and the 15th Annual Conference on World War II at The National World War II Museum (November 18, 2022; Talk Titled: "Women in the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising." You all know we love our Horror books so we're really looking forward to this discussion with author Lindy Ryan about her recent release, "Dollface", Barbie meets Scream with a nostalgic 90s twist - what's not to love?! We'll chat with Lindy about the book, her writing and research process, and how it felt to write about a horror writer (what pieces were her and what were fiction?). About the book: Horror author Jill has just moved to suburban New Jersey, hoping to fit in with the new PTA moms and maybe not weird everyone out with her Final Girl coffee mug. You know. She also writes sweet, seasonal romance under the pseudonym Lindy Miller, and several of her projects have been adapted for the screen. ​A "champion for women's voices in horror" (Shelf Awareness) and a 2020 Publishers Weekly Star Watch Honoree, Ryan is widely recognized for her work in contemporary horror an was named named one of horror's most masterful anthology curators. ​She serves as the current author-in-residence at Rue Morgue, is a columnist at BookTrib, and sits on the Board of Directors for the Brothers Grimm Society of North America. She previously served on the Board of Directors for the Independent Book Publishers Association (IBPA). Ryan is an award-winning professor at Rutgers University and a guest faculty mentor in the Creative Writing MFA program at Western Connecticut State University. Before entering academia, she co-founded Radiant Advisors, a business intelligence research firm, where she led data strategy initiatives for clients including 21st Century Fox Films, Warner Bros., and Disney.
