Join author Lisa C. Taylor for a short reading from her new bestselling novel, The Shape of What Remains. She will also lead participants in a mini writing activity: "The Healing Power of Words: Writing Your Way through Difficult Times."  Participants are asked to bring a notebook or laptop if they wish to participate in the writing activity. About the author: Lisa C. Taylor’s poetry, fiction, and nonfiction has been widely published in national and international journals, magazines, and anthologies. Nominated for the Pushcart Prize in both fiction and poetry, she also garnered Best-of-the-Net nominations in both categories. Lisa won the Hugo House New Works Fiction Award in 2015 and was a spotlight feature on the Associated Writing Programs (AWP) web site and a two-time mentor in their writer-to-writer program. Taylor holds an MFA in Creative Writing from Stonecoast at The University of Southern Maine, teaches online and facilitates workshops around the country at writers’ conferences and schools and is the co-director of the Mesa Verde Writers Conference and Literary Festival. Darning is a fabric mending technique that involves reinforcing or re-weaving a portion of fabric by hand. In this workshop, we’ll learn how to visibly mend holes and weak areas in sweaters, socks, and other knit fabrics using seed stitch and square darning techniques. You’ll leave with a sampler of both techniques that you can refer back to when tackling your own darning projects at home. Suitable for beginners with little or no darning experience, though it does help if you have some experience with hand sewing. About the Presenter: Jessamy is a Somerville-based textile artist and sustainable fashion designer specializing in creative mending and upcycling. She earned a BFA in Fibers and Certificate in Fashion Design from the Massachusetts College of Art & Design, and has taught mending at the Cambridge Public Library, Make & Mend in Somerville, and the Eliot School of Fine & Applied Arts in Jamaica Plain. Join us for a talk with Jean Duffy, author of the book "Soccer Grannies: The South African Women Who Inspire the World." In rural South Africe, beloved humanitarian "Mama Beka" defied social convention and started a soccer team for the women in her community. Soon the Soccer Grannies, as they came to be known, had become an international sensation.  In Soccer Grannies: The South African Women Who Inspire the World, Jean Duffy, a soccer-playing mom herself, recounts how she and her team set to work to bring the Soccer Grannies to the U.S. after hearing their incredible story. Despite many obstacles that stand in their way, the Soccer Grannies finally arrive, and Jean describes the wonderful friendships and cultural exchanges that follow. But Soccer Grannies tells more than just the physical journey of the South African women; it also details the Grannies’ personal journeys, sharing poignant insights into the realities of women living in South Africa. Life beyond the pitch has not been easy for the Grannies. They have persevered through apartheid, rampant poverty and unemployment, the loss of children to AIDS, domestic abuse, and more. But with the friendship and support of their fellow Soccer Grannies, these women face life’s challenges with dignity, humor, and hope. Their stories show to the world the power of sport and its unique ability to bring people and cultures together. Space is limited so please register.
