The Meditation for Mental Health module, provided by Isha Foundation, offers invaluable benefits aimed at preventing mental health issues. Benefits of the programs: ● Helping decrease stress and anxiety ● Enhancing mental clarity ● Promoting emotional balance and psychological well-being Designed by Sadhguru, a self-realized yogi and foremost authority in the field of yoga. The MBTA Mobility Center will be coming to Somerville Public Library, Central Library, on Thursday, March 26th from 12-2 PM  to help community members apply for Income-Eligible Reduced Fares (IERF) and Senior CharlieCards! The Senior CharlieCard provides a 50% discount on all MBTA fares, including on the Commuter Rail and RIDE paratransit. Anyone age 65 or older can apply. To apply for the Senior CharlieCard, you will need to bring any form of government-issued photo ID with your date of birth. About the Presenter: Jessamy Shay Kilcollins is a textile artist, educator, and sustainable fashion designer who uses secondhand materials and handcraft processes to interrogate the roles of consumption and consumerism in modern society. Demystifying Tea Blending Anyone can make a delicious herbal tea blend! In this class, we will discuss a handful of common herbs for tea: their uses, flavors, energies, and what they add to a blend. We will smell each of the herbs and taste some as well, learning how the flavors blend and how they complement each other. We will discuss different considerations for the process of making tea including infusing versus boiling, temperature of the water, and length of time infused. Part information and science, part sensory exploration, this class will be as playful as it is educational! Mo Katz-Christy (they/them) is a queer Ashkenazi Jewish clinical herbalist and educator in Boston, MA on unceded Massachusett land. They approach herbalism by connecting folks to the knowledge they already have about their body and herbs through working with kitchen medicine, ancestral traditions, and mulberries falling on the sidewalk! Mo teaches herb classes and programs at over 40 different sites in New England. They work one-on-one with clients, in Somerville and virtually, to address the root imbalances that are causing dysregulation and to promote long-term healing, focusing on gut health. The Warsaw Ghetto Uprising is one of the most storied events of the Holocaust, yet previous accounts of which have almost entirely focused on its male participants.  In The Girl Bandits of the Warsaw Ghetto: The True Story of Five Courageous Young Women Who Sparked an Uprising, Holocaust historian Elizabeth Hyman introduces five young, courageous Polish Jewish women—known as “the girls” by the leadership of the resistance and “bandits” by their Nazi oppressors—who were central to the Jewish resistance as fighters, commanders, couriers, and smugglers.  Elizabeth Hyman is back for a second conversation about this incredible story, and this time, we'll take a deeper dive into our women heroes - what was their motivation, how did they succeed in their endeavors, what was the impact of their work? Vladka Meed, who smuggled dynamite into and illegal literature out of the Warsaw Ghetto in preparation for the uprising. Dr. Idina “Inka” Blady-Schweiger, a young medical student who became a reluctant angel of mercy. Tema Schneiderman, a tall, beautiful and fearless young woman who volunteered for smuggling and rescue missions across Nazi-occupied Eastern Europe. Tossia Altman, a heroic courier with a poetic soul, who helped bring arms into the Warsaw Ghetto, fought in the Uprising, and ferried communiques to the outside world. Interspersed with the stories of other Jewish women who resisted, The Girl Bandits of the Warsaw Ghetto rescues these women from the shadows of time, bringing to light their resilience, bravery, and cunning in the face of unspeakable hardship—inspiring stories of courage, daring, and resistance that must never be forgotten. About Elizabeth R. Hyman:  The granddaughter and great-granddaughter of Polish Jews who fled their homeland in 1939 and ultimately made their way, as refugees, to the United States, I earned dual master’s degrees in History and Library Science from the University of Maryland-College Park, and have written the history blog, “HISTORICITY (was already taken)” since 2011. I live in New Paltz, New York. My first book, a work of narrative non-fiction titled The Girl Bandits of the Warsaw Ghetto: The True Story of Five Courageous Young Women Who Sparked an Uprising will be released by Harper Perennial in Fall, 2025. I have spoken at such events as the Heroines of the Holocaust: New Frameworks of Resistance, International Symposium at the Wagner College Holocaust Center (June 16, 2022; Talk Titled: "Voices from Beyond the Grave: Tossia Altman and Tema Schneiderman") and the 15th Annual Conference on World War II at The National World War II Museum (November 18, 2022; Talk Titled: "Women in the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising."  This program is presented in partnership with the Ashland Public Library and other MA libraries. Film noir remains one of the most iconic stylistic movements in international cinema. Though it has continued today in international media as far as television and video games, it’s most associated with the post World War II movement of dark cinema in Hollywood that shined a harsh light on a society undergoing intense trauma and rapid change. A subgenre of these films is what filmmaker Thom Andersen labels, “film gris.” A series of film noir movies made by socially active communists and left-wingers in Hollywood, that used the stylistic trademarks of film noir and the archetypes of the crime genre to create scathing realist portraits of post-war poverty, disillusionment, and racism. This series looks at three films that particularly focus on the widespread danger of anti-semitism post WWII, exploitative labor in athletics, and the dangers of mob justice. Importantly, these films are works of entertainment that’ll be used to create a wide-ranging discussion on how artists can work within popular formulas to provide though-provoking social commentary and critique. This month's film is Try and Get Me (also known as The Sound of Fury). Questions?
