Calling all taphophiles! Join the Old Colony History Museum’s Dr. Bill Hanna for a guided walk through one of Taunton’s largest cemeteries. Within Mayflower Hill Cemetery, we’ll explore the grave markers and select stones that note the burials of Taunton’s “potters,” or paupers, and share their stories. Tours are approximately one hour light rain or shine. We encourage appropriate footwear for paved/unpaved terrain and a bottle of water. Tickets are free for members and $10 for not-yet-members. On July 30, 1945, the USS Indianapolis was torpedoed in the South Pacific by a Japanese submarine.  An estimated 300 men were killed upon impact and close to 900 sailors were cast into the sea, fighting off sharks, hypothermia, and hallucinations.  When they were finally discovered only 317 men were still alive.
