Instruction is for complete beginners, and focuses on basic survival English skills, with an emphasis on speaking: greetings and introductions people in the family places in the home and community numbers, time, money, and shopping. food, weather, clothing, everyday activities Classes follow a 12-week fall and spring academic year schedule. Classes are 90 minutes long and meet on two weekdays each week, providing a total of 36 hours of instruction per semester. Classes are taught by a team of English At Large volunteer teachers. All classes are free, and registration is required. This is a Virtual Program. The Beauty and Impact of Woodblock Prints Woodblock prints are among the most beloved and influential of all traditional Japanese art forms. Historically, these prints served multiple purposes — from advertising posters to printed books and fashion promotion. Over the years, their evolving techniques and unique visual characteristics have impacted many major artists and art movements around the world, especially the Impressionists. Journey through a selection of Japanese woodblock prints from the Asian Art Museum collection to heighten your appreciation of their beauty and learn more about the elements that have made them so widely influential. Short Bio Jim Brown is a docent at San Francisco’s Asian Art Museum, where he gives virtual talks on a variety of subjects for the museum’s community outreach program. Prior to retiring and becoming a museum docent, Jim built his own executive search firm specializing in the placement of marketing communications professionals for the healthcare industry. He also has extensive travel experience. Before getting into executive search, Jim was National Group Sales Manager for both French Line and Royal Viking. He has visited more than 60 countries throughout the world. This is an In Person Program.  The MBTA Mobility Center will be coming to help you apply for Income-Eligible Reduced Fares (IERF) and Senior CharlieCards! The IERF provides a 50% discount on all MBTA fares, including on the Commuter Rail and RIDE paratransit. Anyone ages 18-64 who receives benefits from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts (examples below) can apply. To apply for the IERF, you will need to bring either:  A valid Massachusetts ID or driver's license OR another form of government-issued photo ID with your date of birth, and a copy of a benefits verification letter from the last three months.  The Senior CharlieCard also provides a 50% discount on all MBTA fares, including on the Commuter Rail and RIDE paratransit. Anyone age 65 or older can apply. To apply for the Senior CharlieCard, you will need to bring any form of government-issued photo ID with your date of birth. This is an In Person Program.  Welcome to My Favorite Poem, a vibrant poetry club where words come alive, and meaning is shared. More than just a reading group, our club is a space where poetry lovers of all kinds— casual readers, or curious newcomers—gather to explore the power of language through the poems. For our February meeting, we will be reading "I Know a Man" by Robert Creeley. What We Do This club meets on the second Wednesday of every month; We will explore one of the members' favorite poems or collections as a group. It could be a timeless classic, a contemporary piece, or a jaunty limmerick. We read the poem aloud, then open the floor for discussion—unpacking themes, exploring interpretations, and speak to why we share a connection with the verse. It’s not about academic analysis; it’s about feeling the words and finding what resonates. Why It Matters Poetry has a way of expressing the inexpressible. By sharing our favorite poems, we also share parts of ourselves—our histories, values, struggles, and hopes. The result is a deeply connected community that listens, learns, and grows through each other’s voices. Classes are 90 minutes long and meet on two weekdays each week, providing a total of 36 hours of instruction per semester. Classes are taught by a team of English At Large volunteer teachers. All classes are free, and registration is required. Feminist philosopher Dr. Lindsey Stewart’s book, The Conjuring of America: Mojos, Mermaids, Medicine, and 400 Years of Black Women’s Magic, tells the stories of Negro Mammies of slavery; the Voodoo Queens and Blues Women of Reconstruction; and the Granny Midwives and textile weavers of the Jim Crow era. These women, in secrecy and subterfuge, courageously and devotedly continued their practices and worship for centuries and passed down their traditions. Conjure informs our lives in ways remarkable and ordinary—from traditional medicines that informed the creation of Vicks VapoRub and the rise of Aunt Jemima’s Pancake Mix, to the original magic of Disney’s The Little Mermaid (2023), and the true origins of the all-American classic blue jean. From the moment enslaved Africans first arrived on these shores, conjure was heavily regulated and even outlawed. Now, Stewart uncovers new contours of American history, sourcing letters from the enslaved, dispatches from the lore of Oshun and other African mystics. The Conjuring of America is a love letter to the real magic Black women used, their herbs, food, textiles, song, and dance, used to sow rebellion, freedom, and hope. This ancient art has endured through the ages, creating beautiful and easily replicable patterns, layers, and overlays across various materials and surfaces.
