The Lego Mindstorms EV3 system is a great introduction to robotics, programming, and engineering. After an overview of parts and software, participants will be given specific challenges for their robots to overcome, growing in complexity as participants grow more familiar with the capabilities of the robots. Lego master builders are encouraged to participate.  For adults and youth 8+. Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult at all times. While this workshop can be completed individually, it is intended for pairs or small groups. Patrons who sign up individually may be paired up to work together. Patrons may also bring and use their own laptops provided that they have Bluetooth capabilities and the free Lego Mindstorms EV3 software installed beforehand. Hatch workshops start on time. If you arrive late, your spot may be given to someone on the waitlist. MAKER CARDS All visitors to Hatch must show their Hatch Maker Card or sign a waiver to receive a Maker Card. Those under 18 must have a parent/guardian present to sign the waiver. Visitors under 12 years old must be accompanied by a guardian at all times. This is the required training to use the Hatch laser cutter. Patrons will learn the basics of setting up a job, safety considerations, acceptable materials, and some troubleshooting. This is the first step in becoming an independent user of the machine. This workshop does not cover project design and does not allow time for personal projects, although patrons are welcome to bring their project plans and materials in order to get feedback. For patrons 16+. Patrons under the age of 16 are not allowed to use the laser cutter. MAKER CARDS All visitors to Hatch must show their Hatch Maker Card or sign a waiver to receive a Maker Card. This hands-on workshop is presented in collaboration with Engineer to Empower, a nonprofit organization dedicated to introducing girls to engineering through meaningful projects. In this workshop, six young women will work together to build and assemble a Phoenix Hand, a 3D-printed assistive device designed to support individuals with upper-limb differences. Participants will learn basic engineering concepts, follow guided assembly instructions, and gain hands-on experience using assembly tools while exploring how mechanical components work together. At the end of the workshop, each participant will be able to take home the assistive device they helped build. The workshop highlights how engineering and design can be used to make a positive impact in the world. No prior engineering experience is required. For girls and young women ages 14-18. Abigail Adams is sometimes considered to have been a founder of the United States and is now designated as the first Second Lady and second First Lady of The United States. Adams’s life is one of the most documented of the first ladies: she is remembered for the many letters she wrote to her husband while he stayed in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, during the Continental Congresses. John frequently sought the advice of Abigail on many matters, and their letters are filled with intellectual discussions on government and politics. In one of her more famous letters she implores her husband and his colleagues, all of whom were male, to, “…remember the ladies…If particular care and attention is not paid to the Ladies we are determined to foment a Rebellion, and will not hold ourselves bound by any Laws in which we have no voice, or Representation.” Her letters also serve as eyewitness accounts of the American Revolutionary War home front. The Chinese American Association of Watertown (CAAW) invites you to learn Hong Kong/Cantonese style mahjong – a tile-based game of skill, strategy, and luck that is quite different from the tile-matching game you may have encountered in computer games. Instead, 4 players gather around a table and compete to outwit their opponents and be the first to make a winning hand of 14 tiles. If you are already familiar with Chinese mahjong (144 tiles), you may or may not be playing the version being taught at this event! Hong Kong/Cantonese mahjong differs from American mahjong (166 tiles) and does not use jokers or wilds. It is also distinct from Taiwanese mahjong—which we have previously taught—that uses 16 tiles as base and wins with 17 tiles. Scoring, therefore, also differs from Taiwanese style. A favorite pastime of many, we will learn the basics of the game by playing a demonstration hand where each player’s tiles are revealed (face up) and discuss strategy when deciding whether to pick up discarded tiles. The tiles we will use will have numbers carved into the corners so you do not need to know how to read Chinese characters to play! Since 4 players are required for each table, this session can guarantee the first 12 players a seat at the table. Registrants on the waitlist are encouraged to come watch the demonstration and learn—in fact, it may be even easier to learn by watching!—and will have the opportunity to sit down when seats open up. The Chinese American Association of Watertown is a newly formed cultural group dedicated to fostering cultural unity, community empowerment, and social integration for individuals of Chinese heritage in the Watertown area. Note: Chinese mahjong is a game of patterns and strategy, requires quick thinking, motor dexterity, and arm reach for drawing and discarding physical tiles on a square table. This is the required training to use the Hatch laser cutter. Patrons will learn the basics of setting up a job, safety considerations, acceptable materials, and some troubleshooting. This is the first step in becoming an independent user of the machine. This workshop does not cover project design and does not allow time for personal projects, although patrons are welcome to bring their project plans and materials in order to get feedback. For patrons 16+. Patrons under the age of 16 are not allowed to use the laser cutter. MAKER CARDS All visitors to Hatch must show their Hatch Maker Card or sign a waiver to receive a Maker Card. Visitors under 18 must have a parent/guardian present to cosign their waiver. Visitors under 12 years old must be accompanied by a guardian at all times.
