Due to some unanticipated work and noise disruption relating to the elevator modernization project happening at the Library, the Library will be opening at 1:00 pm on the following dates:   Monday, October 27 - Thursday, October 30 1:00 pm - 9:00pm  Friday, October 31 1:00pm - 6:00pm No programs or services will be available until 1:00 pm and there will be no access to the building on those dates. Songwriter Thea Hopkins (Aquinnah Wampanoag) brings to life the wide-ranging voices of Indigenous musicians in the 21st century. Her performance will feature modern works as well as a sprinkling of traditional, timeless tribal artistry. Join us in the Round Room to expand your awareness of contemporary Native American music. Made possible by the Gossels Family Fund for Human Dignity. __________ A member of the Aquinnah Wampanoag tribe of Martha’s Vineyard MA, performing songwriter Thea Hopkins calls her music – Red Roots Americana. The Washington Post has described her as "a standout writer." Her new album is scheduled to be released in September 2025. In March 2021, it was announced Thea was the Grand Prize Winner of the 22nd Great American Song Contest for her song, "The Ghost Of Emmett Till". The song was selected from over 1900 entries from 42 countries. Noel Paul Stookey's (the Paul of P,P & M) quietly dramatic guitar and harmony vocals can be heard on her timely ballad. Her EP "Love Come Down," was nominated for a 2019 Indigenous Music Award. In June 2019, Thea was selected by the Western Arts Alliance as a Native Launchpad Artist, a three-year artist development program. Her 2019 performances included the Kennedy Center (DC) and the Summertyne Americana Festival in Newcastle (UK). She was an artist resident at the Banff Centre For The Arts (CN) in November - December 2019. She first came to wider public notice when Peter, Paul & Mary recorded her song "Jesus Is On The Wire" in 2004, and then again in 2010 with the Prague Symphony Orchestra. It is considered one of their later signature songs. Festivals and venues where Thea has performed include the Kennedy Center (DC), Woody Guthrie Festival (OK), the Green Note (UK), the Brooklyn Americana Festival (UK), Moseley Folk Festival (UK), Greenbelt Festival (UK), Saltaire Festival (UK), Summertyne Americana Festival (UK), the Atkinson (UK), Int'l Festival Of Arts and Ideas (CT), Native Voices Festival (NY), Narrows Center For The Arts (MA), Museum of Fine Arts (MA), American Folk Art Museum (NY), Bluebird Cafe (TN), Smith Center For The Performing arts (NV), LaMama (NY), City Winery (NY), Club Passim (MA), Banff Centre For The Arts (CN) and the Bitter End (NY). Many fans have commented on the beauty of Thea's vocals and lyrics. That sentiment was perhaps most succinctly stated by a former Bob Dylan tour manager, who described Thea Hopkins as "k.d. lang meets Leonard Cohen." "The Persistent Poppy: Looking at 50 Years of Misguided Drug Policy" Register below to attend in person. Register here to attend via Zoom. In the early 1970’s, a team from MIT and the Albert Einstein College of Medicine used the techniques of System Dynamics to understand the rapidly growing problem of heroin addiction in New York City. The results of their work, presented in a book titled The Persistent Poppy, emphasized the importance of a coordinated heroin strategy that included treatment, law enforcement, and prevention and defining heroin addiction as a medical problem rather than a criminal one. Instead, New York State decided to deal with the problem with Draconian criminal penalties that led to a new social problem, mass incarceration. Introduction of oxycodone in the 1990’s caused many new people to become addicted to opioids. Again, the approach was punitive, focused on limiting the availability of oxycodone and generally ignoring the large population already addicted to opioids who turned to heroin and later fentanyl as substitutes. A large number of overdose deaths and a burgeoning opioid supply system resulted. A team from the Einstein College of Medicine and City University of New York is currently using the same System Dynamics tools to study the opioid problem in New York State and recommend strategies for dealing with it. Wayland resident Gary Hirsch was a member of both the 1970’s team and the current one and will speak about his 50-year perspective about how misguided drug policy has been ineffective and created new problems. Gary B. Hirsch has been consulting with organizations on management strategy and organizational change for the past 55 years, working with clients in diverse areas such as health care, human services, education, microfinance, and news media. He specializes in applying System Dynamics and Systems Thinking and creating simulation-based learning environments that help clients understand the complex problems they are dealing with. Mr. Hirsch is a leader in promoting systemic approaches to health problems and health care delivery at the regional and national levels. His work includes studies of social problems such as youth homelessness and drug addiction. He received SB and SM degrees from MIT’s Sloan School of Management with concentrations in System Dynamics and Public Sector Management. He is the author of three books and numerous journal and magazine articles, book chapters, and conference presentations. You’re invited to learn from journalist and author Joseph Lee as he chats online with us about his stirring memoir, Nothing More of This Land: Community, Power, and the Search for Indigenous Identity. In it, he explores Indigenous identity in proximity to land that serves as an iconic vacationing spot for the wealthy–the “island paradise” Martha’s Vineyard. Virtual. Register.
