"Writing Personal Stories" Attend in person or via Zoom. Register below to attend in person. Register here to attend via Zoom. Everyone has stories to tell, but what are the tricks to tell them even when English is your second language? In a world where writers are as likely to be attacked as admired, why write at all, and especially why write nonfiction instead of fiction? Xujun Eberlein shares her own journey as a writer, her experiences with censorship and cross-cultural communication, and her goals of telling a personal story that is universal in its elements and transcends cultural boundaries. She will use her Best American Essay, "Ms. Daylily," to discuss both the emergence of a personal story, and the craft of making the writing sing. This presentation will include time for Q&A. Interested audience are encouraged to read "Ms. Daylily" in advance, and share their questions. Xujun Eberlein is an immigrant writer who has lived half a life each on two sides of the globe. Her personal essay, "Ms. Daylily," was selected by Vivian Gornick and Robert Atwan for The Best American Essays 2023. The essay also won the prestigious Iowa Review Award in Nonfiction, judged by Melissa Febos, who commented that "Rarely have I read a work so sweeping and so achingly intimate, drawn with a careful and skilled hand, a system of images and artfully excerpted diary entries that draw the constellation of a life, of multiple lives, their gorgeous and devastating entwinement.” Xujun's debut short story collection, APOLOGIES FORTHCOMING, won the Tartt First Fiction Award. She received Artist Grants from the Massachusetts Cultural Council in 2008 and 2024. Her fiction and nonfiction works have been widely published in literary magazines. Xujun holds a Ph.D. in Transportation Science from MIT and an MFA in Creative Nonfiction Writing from Emerson College. She currently teaches creative writing at GrubStreet. A well-timed leak has revealed that the US government might have engaged in first contact.
