In this work, Walter, a Pulitzer finalist, exposes the country’s failed response to the opioid crisis, and the malfeasance, corruption, and snake oil which blight the drug rehabilitation industry. The answer is that in America—where anyone can get addicted—only certain people get a real chance to recover. Despite record numbers of overdose deaths, our default response is still to punish, while rehabs across the United States fail to incorporate scientifically proven strategies and exploit patients. In this book, you’ll find the stories of four people who represent the failures of the rehab-industrial complex, and the ways our treatment system often prevents recovery. April is a black mom in Philadelphia, who witnessed firsthand how the government’s punitive response to the crack epidemic impeded her mother’s recovery—and then her own. Chris, a young middle-class white man from Louisiana, received more opportunities in his addiction than April, including the chance to go to treatment instead of prison. Yet the only program the judge permitted was one that forced him to perform unpaid back-breaking labor at for-profit companies. She began investigating for-profit treatment programs—yet law enforcement and regulators routinely ignored her warnings, allowing rehab patients to die, again and again. Larry is a surgeon who himself struggled with addiction, and would eventually become one of the first Suboxone prescribers in the nation, drawing the scrutiny of the Drug Enforcement Administration. Shoshana Walter is a reporter for the Marshall Project covering the criminal justice system. She started her work on the treatment system at The Center for Investigative Reporting, where her work appeared in The New York Times Magazine, in newspapers, and on NPR stations across the country. She is based in Oakland, California. Barbara Ellen Kingsolver is a Pulitzer Prize-winning American novelist, essayist, and poet. Her widely known works include The Poisonwood Bible, the tale of a missionary family in the Congo, and Animal, Vegetable, Miracle, a nonfiction account of her family's attempts to eat locally. In 2023, she was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction for the novel Demon Copperhead. Once upon a time Wayland, then East Sudbury, had many taverns - from the early Parmenter Ordinary of 1653 to many 18th and early 19th century taverns. Gretchen will tell about those that remain, now as private residences, and some that no longer exist. Her own home is Reeves Tavern that is listed in the National Register and about which she knows the most - Hopestill Bent Tavern is one of the earliest, in business from about 1710 to 1780 after which it has remained on site as a dwelling. We'll hear about Pequod House, which was a three-story building on the site of the present Public Safety Building. Some records indicate that there were a dozen taverns at the time of the Revolution. That will be Gretchen's challenge to find them by the time she gives her Tavern talk. Gretchen Schuler was a preservation planning consultant. She taught Preservation Planning at Boston University; wrote historic resource surveys, including Heritage Landscape inventories, National Register nominations and local historic district study reports. Gretchen has served on Wayland’s Planning Board, Historical Commission, Historic District Commission and Community Preservation Committee. She is active at the Wayland Museum and Historical Society and served as its president from 2021-2024. Why is the Moon so similar to the Earth, and yet profoundly different? Why is Venus our sister world when all that is similar is the size? Why is Mars such a hellscape, yet nicer that anywhere other than Earth for human life? Could we survive on Titan, or take a trip through an ocean on Europa? If these questions spark your imagination, then this lecture might just be the one for you. Come join us on a journey throughout the solar system, looking at all kinds of worlds, from planets, to moons, to asteroids and comets, we’ll see a lot of what this solar system has to offer. No astronaut training required! Save the date: 4/28 Asteroid Mining for Dummies 5/12 Science & the Art of Storytelling Dr. Nicholas Castle is a research scientist at the Planetary Science Institute in Tucson, AZ, a not-for-profit research institution that specializes in coordinating remote work and multi-institute collaborations. A graduate of Lehigh, the University of Washington, and the University of Alberta, he has 25 years of experience studying geology, planetary science, and the how-to of space exploration. He’s worked with the Jet Propulsion Laboratory for the past 7 years as a mission operator with the Curiosity rover, NASA’s Mars Science Laboratory mission. A petrologist by training, he is interested in understanding how planets form and differentiate, and the differences in how volcanoes work on different worlds. He uses optical and electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and mass spectrometry to analyze experimental results and natural samples, including meteorites. As a field geologist, he loves to incorporate field observations with laboratory studies, and through robotic exploration has extended his work to encompass numerous terrestrial worlds, from the Earth to Mars, Mercury, and asteroids. As an aspiring mission planner, he is developing proposals to study volcanoes on the Earth, the Moon, and Mars. In his spare time, he plays board games, hikes, and plays with his two young children. Ever an espresso enthusiast, he can often be found haunting a local coffee shop, always working on the next new science proposal.
