Dive into the deep with us for a Halloween-time lecture that’s equal parts science and spine-chilling! Dr. Johanna Weston is a deep-ocean ecologist at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution who studies small animals with big stories to tell — about where they live, how they survive, and what they reveal about the hidden connections that shape our planet. Her work centers on the deep ocean, Earth’s largest and least explored biome, stretching from the twilight bathyal depths at 1,000 meters down to the Challenger Deep at nearly 11,000 meters. Though remote and difficult to study, the deep ocean regulates our climate, locks away carbon, and sustains extraordinary biodiversity, making it essential to understand its resilience in a changing world. In this talk, Dr. Weston will take us on a journey into the deep — diving in the submersible Alvin, sailing aboard the R/V Falkor (too), and exploring places like Argentina’s Mar del Plata Canyon as a National Geographic Explorer. Along the way, we will meet some very special creatures: the amphipod Eurythenes plasticus with its unsettling story of plastic pollution, the hovering isopod Bathyopsurus nybelini searching for sunken Sargassum, and fierce lobster mothers defending their broods against intruding robots. By the end, you’ll see that these “monsters” are not so scary after all, and leave with a new appreciation for the deep-sea animals whose survival is tied to the health of our deep blue planet. Just in time for Halloween, this lecture will plunge you into the mysterious world of the hadal zone, complete with tales of strange creatures, harsh conditions, and eerie isolation. Not recommended for young children—this journey to the ocean's deepest depths is as unsettling as it is unforgettable. Recommended for Middle school or 13+. The aerial visits of the Flying Santa to lighthouses and lifesaving stations have been a New England tradition since 1929. The program was inaugurated by Bill Wincapaw, a pioneering Maine pilot. Edward Rowe Snow, the popular New England historian and storyteller, became involved in the 1930s and kept the flights going through 1980. Today, the nonprofit organization Friends of Flying Santa works to continue the flights as a gesture of gratitude to the men, women, and families of the Coast Guard who keep watch over our coastal waters. Thousands of hours are volunteered each year to ensure the success of the helicopter flights that include the children of Coast Guard families from Maine to New York. As you may know, Jeremy D'Entremont is one of our very favorite speakers so we hope you'll join us for another wonderful discussion! RECORDING NOTE: This program will be recorded. The Little Groove music program is designed to help infants, toddlers, and preschoolers learn and interact with music through sound, sight, and touch. The engaging live music classes provide a safe and fun environment for little ones to explore their musical side. The children use real instruments such as drums, shakers, and tambourines, giving them a hands-on experience. We also incorporate a variety of interactive educational music and movement toys such as puppets, colored scarves, and a large parachute. Meant for ages 0-6.
