The WSA was founded in 1933 to encourage and support local artists, while promoting the fine arts in Wellesley, MA and surrounding communities. Today, its members hail from all across the metro Boston area, as well as Cape Cod and the Islands. Our mission is to promote the fine arts through member-juried exhibitions, artist demonstrations, educational programs, and online resources. Currently, we have more than 100 members, representing a host of different styles in a variety of two-dimensional mediums. This course is geared towards students who have had some experience in watercolor. The focus is on practicing the essential techniques of watercolor with a simple project each week. The projects often focus on particular skills, especially understanding the following techniques to give your work form and dimension: values water-to-pigment ratios washes color mixing All projects are demonstrated step-by-step and individual assistance is offered. Learn the basics of either the 3D printer, laser cutter, or Cricut Maker in a one-hour crash course at the Weston AIC. (See below for class details.) Book an appointment for a one-hour Tech Certification class within this two-hour window.  Class capacity: 1 or 2 participants per class. Age restrictions: 3D printing and Cricut certification classes can be adapted for children 6-12 years old. Child(ren) must be accompanied by an adult; for laser cutter certification, participants must be ages 16+. Cost: $25 per person (payment is collected on the day of the class - card or cash) How to Register: Reserve an appointment for certification here. Types of Tech Certification: 3D Printer Certification 3D printers can create prototypes, replacement parts, toys, jewelry, and much more in a matter of minutes with minimal training to get started. Want to learn how? Sign up to this class at the Weston AIC to learn the basics of 3D printing. After going over the fundamental concepts of 3D printing, each student learns to find and prepare digital files for our Prusa 3D printers. Each student completes a print. Beginners welcome! No 3D modeling experience required. Upon completion of this class, certified individuals are permitted to use the AIC Prusa printers during the Weston AIC's Open Maker Hours. Cricut Maker Certification The Cricut Maker can cut, draw, perforate, score, and even engrave. It cuts through more than 100 types of materials, including all kinds of fabric, textiles, paper, vinyl, craft foam, and wood veneer.  With the Cricut Maker, you can cut out dozens of identical felt hearts or a delicate lacy paper wedding invitation, and customize everything from a coffee mug to a tee shirt, in just a few clicks. Cricut machines are easy to use and only limited by your imagination! Popular with artists, architects, manufacturers, robotics engineers, and small business owners, these powerful machines allow you to complete your projects lightning fast and repeat them with ease. In this certification class, participants learn how to safely operate a laser cutter to cut and engrave wood. Participants are introduced to Lightburn software and create a customized keychain to keep. Upon completion of this class, certified individuals are permitted to use the Weston AIC laser cutter during the Weston AIC's Open Maker Hours with supervision. Artist’s Statement My “biblioquilts” and murals are created using distressed books that I salvage from basements, attics, and public libraries. I repurpose every part--covers, pages, spines--breathing new life into the materials with the addition of dyes, inks, and acrylics. In fact, quilts made from recycled materials are nothing new. But the combination of mixed media and repurposed books presents a new challenge. Each piece is comprised of thousands of “tiles” meticulously hand-cut from discarded or damaged books that no one has paid attention to in decades. Most were on their way to the dump. I also collaborate with families, libraries, and communities on commissioned pieces (murals, typically). My goal is to create original works of art that evoke warm memories for everyone. The books that my clients supply may be damaged, deaccessioned, or obsolete--but not forgotten. After earning a B.A. in Art from Northwestern University, and an M.A. in Biomedical Communications from the University of Texas, I spent 15 years producing award-winning biomedical illustrations, with an emphasis on traditional media, such as pen-and-ink, carbon dust, and watercolor. I then switched to strategic planning, marketing, and business development for the nonprofit sector--mostly because I wasn’t interested in creating artwork on a computer. What can I say? I’m old school. At this stage in my career, I’m thrilled to be getting back to my roots as a maker of fine crafts. On Saturday, November 1, 11:00 a.m., we’ll talk about  The Sound of a Wild Snail Eating (170pp.): In a work that beautifully demonstrates the rewards of closely observing nature, Elisabeth Tova Bailey shares an inspiring and intimate story of her encounter with a Neohelix albolarbris - a common woodland snail. While an illness keeps her bedridden, Bailey watches a wild snail that has taken up residence on her nightstand. As a result, she discovers the solace and sense of wonder that this mysterious creature brings and comes to a greater understanding of her own place in the world. https://westonlibrary.org/1526/Concerts The Town of Weston is incredibly fortunate to be the home of many talented musicians, several of whom will perform in the Library Music Committee’s 2025-26 concert season.  Come to the Library’s Community Room on Sunday, November 2nd at 3 p.m. to welcome two of these well-respected local performers, recently-retired BSO violinist Bo Youp Hwang and pianist Minkyung Oh. They will perform Mozart’s Sonata for Piano and Violin No. 22 in A Major and Schubert’s Sonata for Piano and Violin in A Major, as well as works for piano by Chopin and Glinka/Balakiev.  Born in Korea, Bo Youp Hwang gave his first violin solo performance with the Seoul Symphony Orchestra when he was twelve. He was assistant concertmaster of the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra before joining the Boston Symphony Orchestra in 1973. Mr. Hwang performed on several occasions as a soloist with the Boston Pops Orchestra under John Williams and was also active with the Francesco String Quartet for many years. After 49 years, he retired from the BSO at the end of the Tanglewood 2022 season Graduating with Distinction in Performance from the New England Conservatory. Pianist Minkyung Oh has won numerous prizes at various music festivals in Korea, the US, and Europe. She has also earned a Post Graduate Diploma from the Royal Academy of Music in London and a Doctor of Musical Arts from Boston University. She is on the faculty of the Rivers School Conservatory in Weston and the Cremona International Summer Academy in Italy. Dr. Oh’s performances in the Library’s concert series have been enthusiastically received, and she has also held brilliant outdoor recitals at her home in Weston. Artist’s Statement My “biblioquilts” and murals are created using distressed books that I salvage from basements, attics, and public libraries. I repurpose every part--covers, pages, spines--breathing new life into the materials with the addition of dyes, inks, and acrylics. In fact, quilts made from recycled materials are nothing new. But the combination of mixed media and repurposed books presents a new challenge. Each piece is comprised of thousands of “tiles” meticulously hand-cut from discarded or damaged books that no one has paid attention to in decades. Most were on their way to the dump. I also collaborate with families, libraries, and communities on commissioned pieces (murals, typically). My goal is to create original works of art that evoke warm memories for everyone. The books that my clients supply may be damaged, deaccessioned, or obsolete--but not forgotten. After earning a B.A. in Art from Northwestern University, and an M.A. in Biomedical Communications from the University of Texas, I spent 15 years producing award-winning biomedical illustrations, with an emphasis on traditional media, such as pen-and-ink, carbon dust, and watercolor. I then switched to strategic planning, marketing, and business development for the nonprofit sector--mostly because I wasn’t interested in creating artwork on a computer. What can I say? I’m old school. At this stage in my career, I’m thrilled to be getting back to my roots as a maker of fine crafts. Prelude to Downton Blithe Spirit  1945 (96 minutes) This fall the Film Club will be screening the latest Downton Abbey movie, The Grand Finale. Although the show times have not been finalized yet, we know that this installment will delve into the world of actor, director, playwright, composer and celebrity Noël Coward. It seemed only right that in the time leading up to Downton, we should present one of the films Coward made with director David Lean before his epics Bridge on the River Kwai, Lawrence of Arabia and Doctor Zhivago. Blithe Spirit is based on Coward’s 1941 West End production that ran straight through the war. Rex Harrison plays Charles, a writer who is in need of material for an upcoming supernatural novel. On a lark, he and his wife Ruth (Constance Cummings) invite Mrs. Arcati, an eccentric medium to their house for a séance. With friends attending in good fun, Mrs. Arcati accidently summons the ghost of Charles’ pre-war first wife Elvira (Kay Hammond). At first, only Charles can see Elvira, and everyone, including Charles, wonders if he’s lost his mind. But soon Elvira makes her presence known to Ruth, who becomes very unhappy about their new ‘living’ arrangement—especially when Charles decides they all just need to keep calm, carry on and have a jolly time of it. And because this story was written by Noël Coward, the dialogue is full of double-entendres that made it risqué fare in 1945, much of which may now seem obscure, but the edge can still be felt—along with the exuberant performance by Margaret Rutherford as Mrs. Arcati. The Weavers’ Guild of Boston invites you to its much-anticipated annual sale at the Weston AIC. Just in time for the holiday season, this event features an exceptional selection of handcrafted fiber and fiber related art by local artisans—ranging from fine wearables to absorbent towels, elegant table linens, and other unique gifts.  Each piece has been juried and skillfully made, offering beauty, function, and a touch of artistry for your home or for someone special. While you shop, enjoy the rare chance to watch a weaver at the loom and see the intricate process behind these one-of-a-kind creations.  A portion of the proceeds supports the Guild’s educational programs and grants, helping to keep the tradition of weaving alive for future generations. Costs: Admission is free. For purchases, all major credit cards are accepted. Artist’s Statement My “biblioquilts” and murals are created using distressed books that I salvage from basements, attics, and public libraries. I repurpose every part--covers, pages, spines--breathing new life into the materials with the addition of dyes, inks, and acrylics. In fact, quilts made from recycled materials are nothing new. But the combination of mixed media and repurposed books presents a new challenge. Each piece is comprised of thousands of “tiles” meticulously hand-cut from discarded or damaged books that no one has paid attention to in decades. Most were on their way to the dump. I also collaborate with families, libraries, and communities on commissioned pieces (murals, typically). My goal is to create original works of art that evoke warm memories for everyone. The books that my clients supply may be damaged, deaccessioned, or obsolete--but not forgotten. After earning a B.A. in Art from Northwestern University, and an M.A. in Biomedical Communications from the University of Texas, I spent 15 years producing award-winning biomedical illustrations, with an emphasis on traditional media, such as pen-and-ink, carbon dust, and watercolor. I then switched to strategic planning, marketing, and business development for the nonprofit sector--mostly because I wasn’t interested in creating artwork on a computer. What can I say? I’m old school. At this stage in my career, I’m thrilled to be getting back to my roots as a maker of fine crafts.
