For three seasons I can work outside, on larger (and messier) sculptures, sometimes destined for an outdoor exhibit in a nature preserve, urban square, city park, art complex, or, last year, an orchard in Southampton, Massachusetts. In the winter, though, my indoor studio space is more conducive to smaller projects, including previous works that I finished--but then decided needed something more--or less. Because ideas usually outrun time and energy, though, many of them—compositions out of found materials, wall reliefs using old frames, semi-abstract carvings out of hardwoods, or grand visions of outdoor installations, have to wait for another season, year, and exhibit. Learn the basics of either the 3D printer, laser cutter, or Cricut Maker in a one-hour crash course at the Weston AIC. (See below for class details.) Book an appointment for a one-hour Tech Certification class within this two-hour window.  Class capacity: 1 or 2 participants per class. Age restrictions: 3D printing and Cricut certification classes can be adapted for children 6-12 years old. Child(ren) must be accompanied by an adult; for laser cutter certification, participants must be ages 16+. The Weston AIC welcomes students, artists, makers, and the craft curious! Open Maker Hours are dedicated to anyone who would like to use either of our studio spaces to work independently on personal projects. You are welcome to use our equipment (3D printers, Cricut Makers, and/or Sewing Machines) once you have been certified.*  Open Maker Hours is intended for those who are aged middle school plus. Children UNDER the age of 12 MUST be accompanied by an adult at all times. *To be certified on our equipment, please sign up for one of our Certifications or register for Sewing Fundamentals. If certified patrons would like to make an appointment with Abby to use the laser please sign up here. Just a friendly reminder that you must provide your own materials and there is no instruction provided unless otherwise stated. The equipment may not be available as it is first come first serve. Come to the Weston AIC for this Sewing Certification class and make an Envelope Pillow Cover (pillow form is not included). No machine sewing experience is required. Participants are introduced to the AIC sewing equipment and learn about studio safety. Once certified, participants may use the AIC's sewing machines and sewing tools & equipment on their own during the Weston AIC's Open Maker Hours. To be certified, participants must demonstrate that they can complete the following tasks independently:      Sewing Machines: Install the power cord and foot pedal. Change the needle and the presser foot. Thread the machine for bobbin winding. Wind the bobbin and install the bobbin. Thread the machine for sewing. Adjust the machine settings. Disassemble the machine.      Irons: Plug in, turn on, and heat up the iron without causing harm to individuals or equipment. Press fabrics to remove wrinkles and creases without burning self, equipment, or materials. Unplug the iron, and store it safely in the AIC cabinet. Certification projects are new each month. Participants may take additional certification classes if future projects are of interest and/or for additional practice and guidance in the fundamentals of machine sewing.  Cost: $45 (materials included) How to Register: Please register by Wednesday, February 25, 2026. This relaxed watercolor class at the Weston AIC is geared towards watercolor students who have taken a beginner class and are more familiar with the main watercolor techniques. This class will be project-based and any techniques required for the particular project are reviewed. The projects include subjects like fruit and vegetables, flowers that are not too complex, landscapes with a tree and/or barn, seascapes with a boat or lighthouse, a leaf, and bird or animal. All the line drawings for each project are provided to trace or freehand draw with live demonstrations of each step in the painting process (including color mixing). One-on-one attention is provided continually during class.  Materials List Costs: $125  cost of materials (purchased individually by class participants before class begins) Dates: 7 Tuesday afternoons in March and April: March 3, 10, 17, 24, and 31 April 7 & 14 Please note that this is the AFTERNOON class, which meets from 1 – 3:30 p.m. How to Register: Please register by Saturday, February 28, 2026. TRAVELS & TRAVAILS THE PENGUIN LESSONS 2024, 112 minutes Based on Tom Michell’s memoir of his time in 1976 Argentina, Steve Coogan plays Michell as a jaded Brit who has drifted from one teaching position to another. Arriving at St. George’s College, a very conservative English-themed boys-school for the children of Buenos Aries’ elite, he immediately finds himself at odds with Jonathan Pryce’s stuffy headmaster, who insists that the faculty ignore the political turmoil transpiring just beyond the campus. Michell’s students are largely indifferent to his efforts to introduce them to great literature and not long into the new school year, the Argentine military seized power in a coup d'état, ushering in seven years of violent repression. For the first week, the school was closed with the students sent home, and Michell used the time to vacation at a seaside resort in Uruguay. He had a holiday romance and during a romantic walk down the beach, they came across a huddle of dead penguins caught in an oil spill. Finding one surviving bird, Michell’s date insisted on taking it back to their hotel and cleaning it, saving the penguin’s life. Michell’s romance fizzled, but the bird bonded to him, refusing to return to the ocean, forcing him to smuggle it into Argentina and then into the school. Slowly, Michell bonded with the penguin, naming it Juan Salvador and introducing it to his students. Along the way, the bird brought out the better parts of Michell, who would need all of his humanity as new friends were disappearing—joining the ranks of the 25,000 who were taken by the Argentine Junta. The Weston AIC welcomes students, artists, makers, and the craft curious! Open Maker Hours are dedicated to anyone who would like to use either of our studio spaces to work independently on personal projects. You are welcome to use our equipment (3D printers, Cricut Makers, and/or Sewing Machines) once you have been certified.*  Open Maker Hours is intended for those who are aged middle school plus. Children UNDER the age of 12 MUST be accompanied by an adult at all times. *To be certified on our equipment, please sign up for one of our Certifications or register for Sewing Fundamentals. If certified patrons would like to make an appointment with Abby to use the laser please sign up here. Just a friendly reminder that you must provide your own materials and there is no instruction provided unless otherwise stated. The equipment may not be available as it is first come first serve. Please be aware that this is a shared space and classes may be in session. Please be mindful of noise and workspace. No registration is necessary. Learn the basics of either the 3D printer, laser cutter, or Cricut Maker in a one-hour crash course at the Weston AIC. (See below for class details.) Book an appointment for a one-hour Tech Certification class within this four-hour window.  Class capacity: 1 or 2 participants per class. Age restrictions: 3D printing and Cricut certification classes can be adapted for children 6-12 years old. Child(ren) must be accompanied by an adult; for laser cutter certification, participants must be ages 16+. Cost: $25 per person (payment is collected on the day of the class - card or cash) How to Register: Reserve an appointment for certification here. Types of Tech Certification: 3D Printer Certification 3D printers can create prototypes, replacement parts, toys, jewelry, and much more in a matter of minutes with minimal training to get started. Want to learn how? Sign up to this class at the Weston AIC to learn the basics of 3D printing. After going over the fundamental concepts of 3D printing, each student learns to find and prepare digital files for our Prusa 3D printers. Each student completes a print. Beginners welcome! No 3D modeling experience required. Upon completion of this class, certified individuals are permitted to use the AIC Prusa printers during the Weston AIC's Open Maker Hours. Cricut Maker Certification The Cricut Maker can cut, draw, perforate, score, and even engrave. It cuts through more than 100 types of materials, including all kinds of fabric, textiles, paper, vinyl, craft foam, and wood veneer.  With the Cricut Maker, you can cut out dozens of identical felt hearts or a delicate lacy paper wedding invitation, and customize everything from a coffee mug to a tee shirt, in just a few clicks. Cricut machines are easy to use and only limited by your imagination! Upon completion of this class, certified individuals are permitted to use the AIC Cricut Maker machines during the Weston AIC's Open Maker Hours. Laser Cutter Certification Laser Cutters can cut extremely accurate objects out of materials like wood, leather, colored acrylic, and even felt or paper to make everything from simple boxes to highly detailed engravings and complex 3-dimensional puzzles. Popular with artists, architects, manufacturers, robotics engineers, and small business owners, these powerful machines allow you to complete your projects lightning fast and repeat them with ease. In this certification class, participants learn how to safely operate a laser cutter to cut and engrave wood. Participants are introduced to Lightburn software and create a customized keychain to keep. Upon completion of this class, certified individuals are permitted to use the Weston AIC laser cutter during the Weston AIC's Open Maker Hours with supervision.
