Welcome students, artists, makers, and the craft curious! Open Maker Hours are dedicated to anyone who would like to use either of our studio spaces to work independently on personal projects. You are welcome to use our equipment (3D printers, Cricut Makers, and/or Sewing Machines) once you have been certified.*  Open Maker Hours is intended for those who are aged middle school plus. Children UNDER the age of 12 MUST be accompanied by an adult at all times. *To be certified on our equipment, please sign up for one of our Certifications or register for Sewing Fundamentals. If certified patrons would like to make an appointment with Abby to use the laser please sign up here. Just a friendly reminder that you must provide your own materials and there is no instruction provided unless otherwise stated. The equipment may not be available as it is first come first serve. Create a hand-knotted necklace using a colored silk-knotting cord.  Participants learn to knot between beads with silk, using both an awl and tweezers. Various mixed-color quartz rondelle-shaped beads and colored silk cords are available for participants to choose from, and participants go home with a finished necklace and detailed instructions. Beading tools are available during class and may be used independently during the AIC's Open Maker Hours. Registration closes May 26. For babies and non-verbal toddlers (4 months to 14 months) with an adult! Sign language is great to learn for all ages. It helps babies communicate, and it enhances early literacy skills for verbal children as well! In this program, your child will learn sign language through songs, stories, games, play and more. If you would like to reduce frustration, give your baby the ability to express themselves before speech, accelerate the development of speech, enhance early literacy skills and deepen the bond with your baby, this class is for you! Meets for EIGHT Thursdays,  March 27th through May 29th.  (We will skip April vacation week.)   In the Community Room. Learn the basics of either the 3D printer, laser cutter, or Cricut Maker in a one-hour crash course at the AIC. (See below for class details.) Book an appointment for a one-hour Tech Certification class within this three-hour window.  Class capacity: 1 or 2 participants per class. Age restrictions: 3D printing and Cricut certification classes can be adapted for children 6-12 years old. Child(ren) must be accompanied by an adult; for laser cutter certification, participants must be ages 16+. Cost: $25 per person (payment is collected on the day of the class - card or cash) How to Register: Reserve an appointment for certification here. See also this page on the WestonAIC.org website for more information. Types of Tech Certification: 3D Printer Certification 3D printers can create prototypes, replacement parts, toys, jewelry, and much more in a matter of minutes with minimal training to get started. Beginners welcome! No 3D modeling experience required. In this class, after going over the fundamental concepts of 3D printing, participants learn to find and prepare digital files for our Prusa 3D printers and each participant completes a print.  Upon completion of this class, certified individuals are permitted to use the AIC Prusa printers during AIC Open Maker Hours. Cricut Maker Certification The Cricut Maker can cut, draw, perforate, score, and even engrave. It cuts through more than 100 types of materials, including all kinds of fabric, textiles, paper, vinyl, craft foam, and wood veneer.  With the Cricut Maker, you can cut out dozens of identical felt hearts or a delicate lacy paper wedding invitation, and customize everything from a coffee mug to a tee shirt, in just a few clicks. Upon completion of this class, certified individuals are permitted to use the AIC Cricut Maker machines during AIC Open Maker Hours. Laser Cutter Certification Laser Cutters can cut extremely accurate objects out of materials like wood, leather, colored acrylic, and even felt or paper to make everything from simple boxes to highly detailed engravings and complex 3-dimensional puzzles. Popular with artists, architects, manufacturers, robotics engineers, and small business owners, these powerful machines allow you to complete your projects lightning fast and repeat them with ease. In this certification class, participants learn how to safely operate a laser cutter to cut and engrave wood. Participants are introduced to Lightburn software and create a customized keychain to keep. Upon completion of this class, certified individuals are permitted to use the laser cutter during AIC Open Maker Hours with supervision. Karen is a landscape artist based in Medford, MA. Raised in Hong Kong, she moved to the United States in 2015. Karen currently works in construction relocation, while sharing her creative lifestyle with communities in Massachusetts. Growing up in Hong Kong, she learned that nature is everyone’s treasure--and can’t be taken for granted. Visiting Maine in 2021 had allowed Karen to recognize her deep appreciation for nature, and led her to start painting. Since then, she has traveled to parts of Asia and Europe to find unique landscapes in order to expand her vision. Karen primarily works with acrylic, watercolor, and pen. I have been on a journey to find myself in the art world. The majority of my inspiration comes from nature around the world and teachings from the universe. My work usually features animals, landscapes, and plants. I aim to cultivate a friendly, calm, and vibrant environment for viewers to take space to reevaluate their relationship with the world and find happiness within themselves. Journalist Sharon Udasin will present her new book, Poisoning the Well: How Forever Chemicals Contaminated America, which traces an ugly history of corporate greed, military impunity and community devastation, based on original reporting in four highly contaminated places. The book introduces readers to people who, while fighting for their own lives, take action to fix a broken regulatory system. Sharon will also offer some room for hope, by shedding light on the science that is now breaking down bonds that were for so long deemed unbreakable. Sharon Udasin is an environment reporter and co-author of Poisoning the Well: How Forever Chemicals Contaminated America. Based in Boulder, Colorado, she has been delving into water contamination and conservation issues for 15 years. Sharon was first introduced to the PFAS problem by colleagues in 2019-2020 as a Ted Scripps Fellow in Environmental Journalism at the University of Colorado Boulder. Since completing the fellowship, she has covered US West climate issues for The Hill. A graduate of both the University of Pennsylvania and Columbia Journalism School, Sharon also received a SEAL Environmental Journalism Award in 2023 and has reported for numerous publications throughout her career. Karen is a landscape artist based in Medford, MA. Raised in Hong Kong, she moved to the United States in 2015. Karen currently works in construction relocation, while sharing her creative lifestyle with communities in Massachusetts. Growing up in Hong Kong, she learned that nature is everyone’s treasure--and can’t be taken for granted. Visiting Maine in 2021 had allowed Karen to recognize her deep appreciation for nature, and led her to start painting. Since then, she has traveled to parts of Asia and Europe to find unique landscapes in order to expand her vision. Karen primarily works with acrylic, watercolor, and pen. I have been on a journey to find myself in the art world. The majority of my inspiration comes from nature around the world and teachings from the universe. My work usually features animals, landscapes, and plants. I aim to cultivate a friendly, calm, and vibrant environment for viewers to take space to reevaluate their relationship with the world and find happiness within themselves. Learn the basics of either the 3D printer, laser cutter, or Cricut Maker in a one-hour crash course at the AIC. (See below for class details.) Class capacity: 1 or 2 participants per class. Age restrictions: 3D printing and Cricut certification classes can be adapted for children 6-12 years old. Child(ren) must be accompanied by an adult; for laser cutter certification, participants must be ages 16+. Cost: $25 per person (payment is collected on the day of the class - card or cash) How to Register: See this page on the WestonAIC.org website for more information. Types of Tech Certification: 3D Printer Certification 3D printers can create prototypes, replacement parts, toys, jewelry, and much more in a matter of minutes with minimal training to get started. Beginners welcome! No 3D modeling experience required. In this class, after going over the fundamental concepts of 3D printing, participants learn to find and prepare digital files for our Prusa 3D printers and each participant completes a print.  Upon completion of this class, certified individuals are permitted to use the AIC Prusa printers during AIC Open Maker Hours. Cricut Maker Certification The Cricut Maker can cut, draw, perforate, score, and even engrave. It cuts through more than 100 types of materials, including all kinds of fabric, textiles, paper, vinyl, craft foam, and wood veneer.  With the Cricut Maker, you can cut out dozens of identical felt hearts or a delicate lacy paper wedding invitation, and customize everything from a coffee mug to a tee shirt, in just a few clicks. Upon completion of this class, certified individuals are permitted to use the AIC Cricut Maker machines during AIC Open Maker Hours. Laser Cutter Certification Laser Cutters can cut extremely accurate objects out of materials like wood, leather, colored acrylic, and even felt or paper to make everything from simple boxes to highly detailed engravings and complex 3-dimensional puzzles. Popular with artists, architects, manufacturers, robotics engineers, and small business owners, these powerful machines allow you to complete your projects lightning fast and repeat them with ease. In this certification class, participants learn how to safely operate a laser cutter to cut and engrave wood. Participants are introduced to Lightburn software and create a customized keychain to keep. Upon completion of this class, certified individuals are permitted to use the laser cutter during AIC Open Maker Hours with supervision. Welcome students, artists, makers, and the craft curious! Open Maker Hours are dedicated to anyone who would like to use either of our studio spaces to work independently on personal projects. You are welcome to use our equipment (3D printers, Cricut Makers, and/or Sewing Machines) once you have been certified.*  Open Maker Hours is intended for those who are aged middle school plus. Children UNDER the age of 12 MUST be accompanied by an adult at all times. *To be certified on our equipment, please sign up for one of our Certifications or register for Sewing Fundamentals. If certified patrons would like to make an appointment with Abby to use the laser please sign up here. Welcome students, artists, makers, and the craft curious! Open Maker Hours are dedicated to anyone who would like to use either of our studio spaces to work independently on personal projects. You are welcome to use our equipment (3D printers, Cricut Makers, and/or Sewing Machines) once you have been certified.*  Open Maker Hours is intended for those who are aged middle school plus. Children UNDER the age of 12 MUST be accompanied by an adult at all times. *To be certified on our equipment, please sign up for one of our Certifications or register for Sewing Fundamentals. If certified patrons would like to make an appointment with Abby to use the laser please sign up here. Just a friendly reminder that you must provide your own materials and there is no instruction provided unless otherwise stated. The equipment may not be available as it is first come first serve. Please be aware that this is a shared space and classes may be in session. Please be mindful of noise and workspace. No registration is necessary. Karen is a landscape artist based in Medford, MA. Raised in Hong Kong, she moved to the United States in 2015. Karen currently works in construction relocation, while sharing her creative lifestyle with communities in Massachusetts. Growing up in Hong Kong, she learned that nature is everyone’s treasure--and can’t be taken for granted. Visiting Maine in 2021 had allowed Karen to recognize her deep appreciation for nature, and led her to start painting. Since then, she has traveled to parts of Asia and Europe to find unique landscapes in order to expand her vision. Karen primarily works with acrylic, watercolor, and pen. I have been on a journey to find myself in the art world. The majority of my inspiration comes from nature around the world and teachings from the universe. My work usually features animals, landscapes, and plants. I aim to cultivate a friendly, calm, and vibrant environment for viewers to take space to reevaluate their relationship with the world and find happiness within themselves. The Ethical Engineering Club at Weston High School is a club dedicated to promoting sustainability and ethics in engineering. In order to spread critical knowledge about the way engineers in various fields face and consider challenges with ethics and sustainability, we have decided to host a guest speaker series in which experienced engineers will come and present their experiences on how ethics have impacted the efficiency and sustainability of their work. WESTON CELEBRATES RACE AMITY DAY WITH BOSTON’S CITY STRINGS Join us in the Weston Community Center on Sunday, June 8th, at 4 p.m. for RACE AMITY DAY. We will highlight performances by City Strings United, whose mission is "to promote youth development in historically excluded communities through access to high-quality, student-centered music education and ensemble performance." Faith-based and civic groups from Weston, Wayland, Lincoln and neighboring communities have come together since 2020 to celebrate how people from various cultures and ethnicities share talents and celebrate a diverse community. This year, on the second Sunday in June, the official date marking Race Amity Day in Massachusetts, we welcome Bithyah Israel, Rhea Gibson and students from the Greater Boston area to play chamber music and share their stories. City Strings United has been recognized by Boston media as well as local social and cultural institutions, including: The Boston Globe, New England Cable News, Boston Neighborhood Network, Urban Update, Greater Boston Chapter of the National Council of Negro Women, Black Ministerial Alliance, Mothers for Justice and Equality, The Northeasterners The New England Arts Group. One Boston Mom states: "My child has learned not only how to play the cello, she has gained skills with working as a team as well as leadership skills. Her confidence level has soared giving her self-esteem in her ability to do anything she sets her mind to do. It has been wonderful watching City String's mold the kids to be successful adults."
