For three seasons I can work outside, on larger (and messier) sculptures, sometimes destined for an outdoor exhibit in a nature preserve, urban square, city park, art complex, or, last year, an orchard in Southampton, Massachusetts. In the winter, though, my indoor studio space is more conducive to smaller projects, including previous works that I finished--but then decided needed something more--or less. Because ideas usually outrun time and energy, though, many of them—compositions out of found materials, wall reliefs using old frames, semi-abstract carvings out of hardwoods, or grand visions of outdoor installations, have to wait for another season, year, and exhibit. The Weston AIC welcomes students, artists, makers, and the craft curious! Open Maker Hours are dedicated to anyone who would like to use either of our studio spaces to work independently on personal projects. You are welcome to use our equipment (3D printers, Cricut Makers, and/or Sewing Machines) once you have been certified.*  Open Maker Hours is intended for those who are aged middle school plus. Children UNDER the age of 12 MUST be accompanied by an adult at all times. *To be certified on our equipment, please sign up for one of our Certifications or register for Sewing Fundamentals. If certified patrons would like to make an appointment with Abby to use the laser please sign up here. Just a friendly reminder that you must provide your own materials and there is no instruction provided unless otherwise stated. The equipment may not be available as it is first come first serve. Learn the basics of either the 3D printer, laser cutter, or Cricut Maker in a one-hour crash course at the Weston AIC. (See below for class details.) Book an appointment for a one-hour Tech Certification class within this four-hour window.  Class capacity: 1 or 2 participants per class. Age restrictions: 3D printing and Cricut certification classes can be adapted for children 6-12 years old. Child(ren) must be accompanied by an adult; for laser cutter certification, participants must be ages 16+. Cost: $25 per person (payment is collected on the day of the class - card or cash) How to Register: Reserve an appointment for certification here. Types of Tech Certification: 3D Printer Certification 3D printers can create prototypes, replacement parts, toys, jewelry, and much more in a matter of minutes with minimal training to get started. After going over the fundamental concepts of 3D printing, each student learns to find and prepare digital files for our Prusa 3D printers. Each student completes a print. Beginners welcome! Cricut Maker Certification The Cricut Maker can cut, draw, perforate, score, and even engrave. It cuts through more than 100 types of materials, including all kinds of fabric, textiles, paper, vinyl, craft foam, and wood veneer.  With the Cricut Maker, you can cut out dozens of identical felt hearts or a delicate lacy paper wedding invitation, and customize everything from a coffee mug to a tee shirt, in just a few clicks. Popular with artists, architects, manufacturers, robotics engineers, and small business owners, these powerful machines allow you to complete your projects lightning fast and repeat them with ease. In this certification class, participants learn how to safely operate a laser cutter to cut and engrave wood. Participants are introduced to Lightburn software and create a customized keychain to keep. Upon completion of this class, certified individuals are permitted to use the Weston AIC laser cutter during the Weston AIC's Open Maker Hours with supervision. Come to the Weston AIC for this abstract painting workshop that uses the power of play, experimentation, and intuition to create layered, unique, acrylic paintings.  Absolutely no previous experience or special talent is required, but this approach can be freeing for practicing artists, too.  At the end of the workshop series, you’ll have two finished paintings. We build our paintings by adding layers week by week. Session 1: Start Where You Art We start by scribbling on the canvases to loosen up and warm up. We paint words of intention on the surface. Then we make broad strokes of bold color, using big brushes. We start with a warm color palette on one canvas (red, orange,yellow, pink) and a cool palette on the other (green, blue, teal, violet). Then we add a bit of black and white to both paintings. Session 2: Happy Little Accidents Today is all about play. We make random marks and lines. We swoop, drip, swirl, sketch and stamp with fingers, objects, stencils, and smaller brushes. Each layer has a presence; we don’t obliterate layers but instead use the improvisational principle of “yes, and” to build our paintings. Session 3: Subject Matters This session is all about exploring composition. We may chalk outlines on our canvas, or we may create masking shapes or stencils out of paper to create designs that feel “on purpose.” The instructor has a stencil library for painters to use, as well as a projector that will allow artists to draw outlines of digital images, if they wish. Session 4: Wholeness and Completion Today we put the finishing touches on our paintings, including our artist signature. Some may wish to make small final marks with acrylic markers, which will be provided. We do a gallery walk of each other’s work, and comment on what we love. We reflect on what the process has taught us, and dream and scheme about possible next steps on our creative itinerary. You are welcome to use our equipment (3D printers, Cricut Makers, and/or Sewing Machines) once you have been certified.*  Open Maker Hours is intended for those who are aged middle school plus. Children UNDER the age of 12 MUST be accompanied by an adult at all times. *To be certified on our equipment, please sign up for one of our Certifications or register for Sewing Fundamentals. The Weston AIC welcomes students, artists, makers, and the craft curious! Open Maker Hours are dedicated to anyone who would like to use either of our studio spaces to work independently on personal projects. You are welcome to use our equipment (3D printers, Cricut Makers, and/or Sewing Machines) once you have been certified.*  Open Maker Hours is intended for those who are aged middle school plus. Children UNDER the age of 12 MUST be accompanied by an adult at all times. *To be certified on our equipment, please sign up for one of our Certifications or register for Sewing Fundamentals. If certified patrons would like to make an appointment with Abby to use the laser please sign up here. Just a friendly reminder that you must provide your own materials and there is no instruction provided unless otherwise stated. The equipment may not be available as it is first come first serve. For three seasons I can work outside, on larger (and messier) sculptures, sometimes destined for an outdoor exhibit in a nature preserve, urban square, city park, art complex, or, last year, an orchard in Southampton, Massachusetts. In the winter, though, my indoor studio space is more conducive to smaller projects, including previous works that I finished--but then decided needed something more--or less. Because ideas usually outrun time and energy, though, many of them—compositions out of found materials, wall reliefs using old frames, semi-abstract carvings out of hardwoods, or grand visions of outdoor installations, have to wait for another season, year, and exhibit. Mojos, Mermaids, Medicine, and 400 Years of Black Women’s Magic with Dr. Lindsey Stewart Award-Winning Author and Professor of Philosophy Virtual Event Feminist philosopher Dr. Lindsey Stewart’s book, The Conjuring of America: Mojos, Mermaids, Medicine, and 400 Years of Black Women’s Magic, tells the stories of Negro Mammies of slavery; the Voodoo Queens and Blues Women of Reconstruction; and the Granny Midwives and textile weavers of the Jim Crow era. These women, in secrecy and subterfuge, courageously and devotedly continued their practices and worship for centuries and passed down their traditions. Conjure informs our lives in ways remarkable and ordinary—from traditional medicines that informed the creation of Vicks VapoRub and the rise of Aunt Jemima’s Pancake Mix, to the original magic of Disney’s The Little Mermaid (2023), and the true origins of the all-American classic blue jean. From the moment enslaved Africans first arrived on these shores, conjure was heavily regulated and even outlawed. Elizabeth Freeman is a little-known national hero, and a symbol of courage and spirit to all who cherish freedom. She was among the first slaves in Massachusetts to sue for and win her freedom. During the Revolutionary War, she heard the Massachusetts Constitution read aloud, and heard these words: “All men are born free and equal...” Freeman organized the potential legal and moral significance of these words and sought out an attorney to sue for her freedom under the newly-ratified state constitution. With the help of an attorney who was an abolitionist, she pled her case for freedom in a western Massachusetts court. The jury ruled in her favor and she became the first African-American woman set free under the Massachusetts constitution. She will also share tips on floral arranging and how to make your cut flowers last longer. The owner and founder of Decanted Wine Truck and Mobile Bar, Julia Walderzak, will lead you through a tasting of chocolates and sparkling drinks.  All materials are included. For three seasons I can work outside, on larger (and messier) sculptures, sometimes destined for an outdoor exhibit in a nature preserve, urban square, city park, art complex, or, last year, an orchard in Southampton, Massachusetts. In the winter, though, my indoor studio space is more conducive to smaller projects, including previous works that I finished--but then decided needed something more--or less. Because ideas usually outrun time and energy, though, many of them—compositions out of found materials, wall reliefs using old frames, semi-abstract carvings out of hardwoods, or grand visions of outdoor installations, have to wait for another season, year, and exhibit. Learn the basics of either the 3D printer, laser cutter, or Cricut Maker in a one-hour crash course at the Weston AIC. (See below for class details.) Book an appointment for a one-hour Tech Certification class within this four-hour window.  Class capacity: 1 or 2 participants per class. Age restrictions: 3D printing and Cricut certification classes can be adapted for children 6-12 years old. Child(ren) must be accompanied by an adult; for laser cutter certification, participants must be ages 16+. Cost: $25 per person (payment is collected on the day of the class - card or cash) How to Register: Reserve an appointment for certification here. Types of Tech Certification: 3D Printer Certification 3D printers can create prototypes, replacement parts, toys, jewelry, and much more in a matter of minutes with minimal training to get started. Want to learn how? Sign up to this class at the Weston AIC to learn the basics of 3D printing. After going over the fundamental concepts of 3D printing, each student learns to find and prepare digital files for our Prusa 3D printers. Each student completes a print. Beginners welcome! No 3D modeling experience required. Upon completion of this class, certified individuals are permitted to use the AIC Prusa printers during the Weston AIC's Open Maker Hours. Cricut Maker Certification The Cricut Maker can cut, draw, perforate, score, and even engrave. It cuts through more than 100 types of materials, including all kinds of fabric, textiles, paper, vinyl, craft foam, and wood veneer.  With the Cricut Maker, you can cut out dozens of identical felt hearts or a delicate lacy paper wedding invitation, and customize everything from a coffee mug to a tee shirt, in just a few clicks. Cricut machines are easy to use and only limited by your imagination! Laser Cutter Certification Laser Cutters can cut extremely accurate objects out of materials like wood, leather, colored acrylic, and even felt or paper to make everything from simple boxes to highly detailed engravings and complex 3-dimensional puzzles. Popular with artists, architects, manufacturers, robotics engineers, and small business owners, these powerful machines allow you to complete your projects lightning fast and repeat them with ease. In this certification class, participants learn how to safely operate a laser cutter to cut and engrave wood. Participants are introduced to Lightburn software and create a customized keychain to keep. Upon completion of this class, certified individuals are permitted to use the Weston AIC laser cutter during the Weston AIC's Open Maker Hours with supervision. Class participants experiment with multiple techniques -- resists, stencils, textures, inks, grease crayons and transfers.
