Learn about the exciting Michigan Arctic Grayling Initiative from representatives of the Little River Band of Ottawa Indians and the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians. The initial reintroduction of the Arctic Grayling in the North Branch of the Upper Manistee and Boardman/Ottaway Rivers begins May 12th. The Oliver Art Center hosts the 2025 Great Lakes Pastel Society’s 2025 Members Small Works Exhibition in its Fisher Room gallery from June 7 – July 12. An opening reception will be held on June 7th from 2:00 – 4:00 pm. This juried show features the work of some of the best pastelists in the region.  The Great Lakes Pastel Society seeks to promote the use of pastels and increase the public awareness of creative pastel painting as a fine art medium. Join us to explore the proposed ‘Excelsior’ Perch Lake addition to Upper Manistee Headwaters: The Milock Family Nature Preserve while learning about the Conservancy’s effort to add this 342-acre parcel to the preserve. Experience this unique natural habitat with Angie Bouma, GTRLC senior conservation ecologist, and Matt Ross, executive director of the Botanic Garden at Historic Barns Park, who will introduce you to several of the hundreds of plant and animal species that call this remarkable place home. The Basics This proposed addition protects the entirety of a glacial lake, called Perch Lake, along with several ecologically rich bogs that support water quality within the north branch of the Manistee River and the Manistee River watershed. The 2.5-mile hike route is over primarily flat terrain in the woods. We will spend two hours together exploring the property’s diverse habitats, including mesic northern hardwood forest, early-successional forest, various wetlands and a well-managed, mature pine plantation. The forests host a diversity of high conservation value plants, and many unique wildlife species have been documented. What should I bring? Come prepared with hiking gear, water, and your curiosity! Join us at the Old Baldy trailhead at Arcadia Dunes: The C.S. Mott Nature Preserve for our annual dune wildflower hike! Volunteer Paula Dreeszen will share her knowledge and passion for native plants with a backdrop of Lake Michigan atop the perched dune at Old Baldy. The Basics This is a 2.5 mile hike with gradual elevation change on mostly firm trails. There is one steep climb up to the perched dune. We will make several stops to share specific wildflower information along the way. We love having experts to help point things out, but no prior experience in identifying plants is expected, just come prepared to learn! What should I bring? Join GTRLC farm operations and sustainability coordinator, Sam Griffin, and Misty Acres Farm manager, Nick Eddy, for a tour of Misty Acres Farm! While walking the property, staff will introduce regenerative agriculture practices and various forms of farm stewardship to improve the land’s resilience. Learn about regenerative cattle grazing, nutrient management designed to reduce greenhouse emissions, and the innovative use of farm equipment and livestock for habitat restoration. All these activities aim to enhance soil health and increase carbon sequestration on the land. The Basics This tour will take about 2 hours on a mostly paved trail with occasional rough terrain on uneven surfaces. The site demonstrates multiple projects integrating agriculture with conservation goals and techniques to balance these mutually beneficial goals. Although the trail does not pass through the woods or tall grasses, we recommend wearing long pants and toe-covered shoes. Please remember to also perform a tick check at the journey's end. Join us for a hike on “The Ridge,” a new Grand Traverse Regional Land Conservancy (GTRLC) project that will help safeguard the water quality of Grand Traverse Bay, save wildlife habitat, and open up recreational opportunities. Enjoy a breathtaking view of Grand Traverse Bay and beyond, as far as Leelanau County and Charlevoix, and learn about the property’s diverse habitats. This expansive property could soon become a crown jewel in the area's outdoor recreation network. With an elevation of roughly 880 feet, it is one of the highest points in Grand Traverse County. The Basics Come prepared for a 1.5-mile hike on moderately strenuous terrain, which will take approximately 2 hours. We will walk over a 200-ft elevation change, with a steep climb up to the top and some unstable footing. What should I bring? We recommend hiking shoes or boots, poles, and long pants Dress for the weather!
