Step into the boots of a US Life Saving Service surfman! Sleeping Bear Dunes needs you—especially kids—to help practice the Beach Apparatus Drill. The Beach Apparatus was a land-based rescue method used by the US Life-Saving Service. A small cannon sent ropes out to a sinking ship, creating a zip-line from the ship to the shore. The apparatus saved thousands of lives nationwide, including here in the Manitou Passage. Join the demonstration to help "fire" a kid-powered Lyle Gun and rescue victims from a "shipwreck". No experience necessary, just a sense of adventure! Perfect for families, kids, and anyone curious about Great Lakes Maritime history. Arrive a few minutes early as drills begin on Thursday at 3 pm sharp. In past years, after the demonstration, a replica Lyle gun was fired on the beach using a black-powder charge. This firing will not occur in 2026. National Park Service historic weapons demonstrations can only be conducted by a certified Historic Weapons Supervisor. Sleeping Bear Dunes is currently without a Historic Weapons Supervisor. 

Program will take place in the green space between the Maritime Museum and the Boathouse.

Join author Susan Wasserman’s presentation on her award-winning book, “Stepping off the Boat: Stories from North Manitou Island”.North Manitou is an island of 15,000 acres within the national park with a rich and varied history, including eras as a summer resort, logging outpost, and farming community. The award-winning book is a collection of captivating stories and engaging photographs that evokes the layered history of North Manitou Island. Learn about the families of North Manitou Island and let historic photographs bring alive the stories of indigenous peoples, fur traders, lumbermen, farmers, and summer resorters who shaped North Manitou Island, as well as coast guard history. Let the setting of the Glen Haven Cannery and Boat Museum inspire the evening’s talk with views out to the Manitou Islands.  The boat museum will be open after normal hours before the talk, to view the exhibits and boats.

The event will take place inside the Cannery Boat Museum in Glen Haven.

The practice of yoga starts by showing up with the intention of looking inside oneself to reflect on what your body and soul may need. We are honored to be able to do so on the lovely lakeshore of the Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes.Yoga on the Beach is a business supporter of Friends of Sleeping Bear Dunes. These popular beach yoga classes are offered on a donation basis, with proceeds benefiting both Yoga on the Beach and Friends of Sleeping Bear Dunes. A suggested donation to Yoga on the Beach of $15–$25 is appreciated, though participants are encouraged to contribute whatever fits their budget.Yoga on the Beach is held at the Sleeping Bear Point Coast Guard Station Maritime Museum, to the west of the Cannery. Learn about spinning, basket weaving, soap making, butter making, candle dipping, and fur trapping. Listen as park rangers and local history experts share the area's history. Watch as teams of oxen and horses cut, load, and haul hay and artists and craftsmen demonstrate their skills.The fair is held at four of the historic farmsteads in Port Oneida. Each farm has a variety of artists, crafts, food, and activities for visitors. Click on the farm names below to see what's happening at each farm. No experience necessary, just a sense of adventure! Perfect for families, kids, and anyone curious about Great Lakes Maritime history. Arrive a few minutes early as drills begin on Thursday at 3 pm sharp. In past years, after the demonstration, a replica Lyle gun was fired on the beach using a black-powder charge. This firing will not occur in 2026. National Park Service historic weapons demonstrations can only be conducted by a certified Historic Weapons Supervisor. Sleeping Bear Dunes is currently without a Historic Weapons Supervisor. 

Program will take place in the green space between the Maritime Museum and the Boathouse.

The practice of yoga starts by showing up with the intention of looking inside oneself to reflect on what your body and soul may need. We are honored to be able to do so on the lovely lakeshore of the Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes.Yoga on the Beach is a business supporter of Friends of Sleeping Bear Dunes. These popular beach yoga classes are offered on a donation basis, with proceeds benefiting both Yoga on the Beach and Friends of Sleeping Bear Dunes. A suggested donation to Yoga on the Beach of $15–$25 is appreciated, though participants are encouraged to contribute whatever fits their budget.Yoga on the Beach is held at the Sleeping Bear Point Coast Guard Station Maritime Museum, to the west of the Cannery. (Take a left at the stop sign in front of the big red building and follow the signs.) There is a parking lot for the Museum on the right just before the Sleeping Bear Point Trailhead.
