In celebration of Women’s History Month, “A Cradle of Democracy, Women's Civic Groups Changing the Northern Michigan Community: From the Local History Collection” highlights the women’s civic groups that have shaped Traverse City’s cultural and community life for more than a century. From the Ladies Library Association, founded in 1869, to the Friendly Garden Club, the American Association of University Women, and many others, these groups transformed shared purpose into lasting impact. Drawn from the Local History Collection, this exhibit honors the women whose leadership, collaboration, and vision helped make Northern Michigan the vibrant community it is today.

Join us and Lisa George for a class on Ageless Grace Neuroplasticity Exercises. The Ageless Grace Brain Health Program is based on consciously choosing to change the brain through physical movements similar to playful childhood activities that fired neurons and developed neural pathways from birth to mid-teens. All 21 Simple Tools for Lifelong Comfort and Ease can be practiced by almost anyone of any age or ability. The exercises are designed to be practiced seated, in order to stimulate the five primary functions of the brain (strategic planning, memory and recall, analytical thinking, creativity and imagination and kinesthetic learning) by doing unfamiliar movements, or creating new ways to do an activity that is already familiar. The movements are spontaneous and organic, with no need to learn any special choreography. Each of the brain-changing tools also focus on a primary physical skill necessary for lifelong optimal function (i.e. joint mobility, balance, spinal flexibility, upper body strength, coordination) - and all promote the “Three R’s” of Ageless Grace, the ability to respond, react and recover.

Come play a homebrew tabletop role playing game (TTRPG) at the library! Participants should be dedicated to play, and be willing to give input on the world, system, and story created by the group as well as choosing a player to take up the role as GM. Depending on what the group chooses, the host has 5 systems they can pick on what they find will fit the campaign better. Final decisions will be made by the host. Expect to spend about 4 hours per session.Please respond to the registration email so that some pre-planning can take place. This first meet-up will be building the world and setting expectations. January 31st game play will begin in earnest and will take place every other Saturday at 11:00am. Beginners and experienced young adult players (16-23 years old) are welcome.Note: You may want to bring a notebook or tablet to this program. You may also bring a small, odorless snack.

The Williams Family has been picking morels in Northern Michigan since the 1890s and Anthony's pickin' advice has been proven to be enlightening for everyone from novice to the seasoned pro.After winning the National Morel Hunting Championship five years in a row, Anthony Williams retired from competitive picking to become the "Expert in Residence" for the National Morel Festival. Over the past twenty years he has continued to share his "Picking with the Champ" seminar at the festival and Michigan libraries. This seminar is filled with stories from his 70 years of picking, tips on where and how to pick including the finer points on finding the elusive morel. Fun will be had by all and hopefully you will walk away filled with hope and promise in your future morel hunting capabilities.

910 Media Group is taking its Conversations on Cass series on the road and partnering with the Traverse Area District Library to host a discussion titled “Civility and the Role of Local News.”The 60-minute event will take place from 6 to 7 p.m. March 31 in the library’s Community Room at 610 Woodmere Ave., with the room opening at 5:30 p.m. for networking.The event is free to the public and RSVPs will remain open as space allows. The discussion will focus on polarization, trust and the role of local media in Northern Michigan.The event follows survey data showing 86% of Americans say they feel exhausted by division in America, 87% say political polarization is a threat to America and 57% express low confidence in journalists to act in the best interests of the public.Panelists include Rebecca Pierce, executive editor at Traverse City Record-Eagle; Ed Ronco, news director at Interlochen Public Radio; and Joe Warner, senior director of news strategy at 910 Media Group.9&10 News Anchor and Reporter David Lyden will moderate the discussion.
