Dry Laws, Wet Towns explores the era of Prohibition in Northwest Michigan through photographs and records preserved in the Local History Collection. Between 1920 and 1933, the federal ban on alcohol transformed daily life across the region, giving rise to hidden saloons, raids, and a thriving underground trade sustained by local families and communities.Featured images document law enforcement actions against clandestine establishments operating in homes, businesses, and remote locations throughout Northern Michigan. At the same time, they reveal the complicated realities of a period when public law and private practice often stood in sharp contrast. Together, these photographs offer a glimpse into the ingenuity, risk, and resilience that characterized life during Prohibition, while illuminating a lesser-known chapter of regional history.This exhibit explores over 100 years of ideas, voices, and democracy in our region, and is part of TADL’s Cradle of Democracy series.

Join us and Lisa George for a class on Ageless Grace Neuroplasticity Exercises.The Ageless Grace Brain Health Program is based on consciously choosing to change the brain through physical movements similar to playful childhood activities that fired neurons and developed neural pathways from birth to mid-teens. All 21 Simple Tools for Lifelong Comfort and Ease can be practiced by almost anyone of any age or ability. The exercises are designed to be practiced seated, in order to stimulate the five primary functions of the brain (strategic planning, memory and recall, analytical thinking, creativity and imagination and kinesthetic learning) by doing unfamiliar movements, or creating new ways to do an activity that is already familiar. The movements are spontaneous and organic, with no need to learn any special choreography. Each of the brain-changing tools also focus on a primary physical skill necessary for lifelong optimal function (i.e. joint mobility, balance, spinal flexibility, upper body strength, coordination) - and all promote the “Three R’s” of Ageless Grace, the ability to respond, react and recover.

The exercises are designed to be practiced seated, in order to stimulate the five primary functions of the brain (strategic planning, memory and recall, analytical thinking, creativity and imagination and kinesthetic learning) by doing unfamiliar movements, or creating new ways to do an activity that is already familiar. The movements are spontaneous and organic, with no need to learn any special choreography. Each of the brain-changing tools also focuses on a primary physical skill necessary for lifelong optimal function (i.e. joint mobility, balance, spinal flexibility, upper body strength, coordination) — and all promote the “Three R’s” of Ageless Grace: the ability to respond, react and recover.
