Join us for an engaging discussion of this fascinating, yet disturbing genre. We focus our discussion on uplifting and empathizing with the victims of these crimes. We will be reading the book Blood on the Mitten by Tom Carr.  To participate, borrow a copy here using your library card and join our discussion. Summary:In Blood on the Mitten, crimes of passion, crimes of necessity and cold, calculated evil take on flesh, bones and blood. These 57 illustrated, read-out loud tales from across time also look at the historical context of murder, in Michigan and beyond.Michigan’s blood-red past includes crooked sheriffs, ruthless gangsters, serial killers, mass murderers, Wild West-style bandits, and pirates. These miscreants, and more, do their dastardly deeds in Blood on the Mitten, an aptly-titled case book documenting the more infamous scenes in Michigan history. Each chapter contains a “Murder Map”—a unique guide for the stout-of-heart who would like to follow in the footsteps of the characters who doused the Mitten with blood-spatter. If you would like a reminder email, please register below.  Join us at the Saginaw Chippewa Tribal Library for conversation, refreshments, and a special LIVE virtual presentation. Award-winning journalist and author Joseph Lee chats online with us about his stirring memoir, Nothing More of This Land: Community, Power, and the Search for Indigenous Identity. In it, he explores Indigenous identity in proximity to land that serves as an iconic vacation spot for the wealthy — the “island paradise” of Martha’s Vineyard. Lee weaves his own story—and that of his family—with conversations with Indigenous leaders, artists, and scholars from around the world, covering topics ranging from culture and language to climate change and the politics of belonging. As he unpacks the meaning of Indigenous identity, Lee grants us a new understanding of our nation and what a better community might look like. Attendees will have a chance to win Joseph Lee's new release, Nothing More of This Land: Community, Power, and the Search for Indigenous Identity. About the Author: Growing up Aquinnah Wampanoag, Joseph Lee grappled with what it means to be an Indigenous person in the world today, especially as tribal land, culture, and community face new threats. Starting with the story of his own tribe, which is from the iconic Martha’s Vineyard, Lee tackles key questions around Indigenous identity and the stubborn legacy of colonialism. Joseph Lee is an Aquinnah Wampanoag writer based in New York City. He has an MFA from Columbia University and teaches creative writing at Mercy University. His writing has been published in The Guardian, BuzzFeed, Vox, High Country News, and numerous other outlets. He was a Margins Fellow at the Asian American Writers Workshop and a Senior Indigenous Affairs Fellow at Grist. In partnership with Saginaw Chippewa Tribal Libraries Sponsored by Friends of the Veterans Memorial Library. Please note the Saginaw Chippewa Tribal Library's new location!
