Now Open at the Harbor Springs History Museum This groundbreaking traveling exhibition celebrates the rich artistic traditions of the Anishinaabe people through the intricate and powerful medium of porcupine quill art. It is the first major traveling exhibition dedicated to Anishinaabe porcupine quillwork and the first to be fully bilingual in Anishinaabemowin and English.  The exhibition features the work of contemporary Anishinaabe artists from Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Manitoulin Island, Canada, while honoring the generations of ancestors who preserved and passed down the skills required to master this distinctive art form. Visitors will encounter not only stunning works of art but also videos, images documenting the harvesting of materials, a recreation of an artist?s workstation, and a small area for children?s crafts related to the art form. Bishop David Alan Bard is the presiding bishop of the Michigan Conference and jointly serves as bishop of the Illinois Great Rivers Area of The United Methodist Church. Bishop Bard also served the Minnesota Annual Conference as interim bishop 2021-2022. Before arriving in Michigan in September 2016, Bishop Bard had served at First United Methodist Church in Duluth, Minnesota, since 2005. He was elected to the episcopacy on July 13, 2016, at the North Central Jurisdictional Conference in Peoria, IL. He has been in ministry for more than 30 years and served in many roles within the Minnesota Annual Conference and the General Church. Bishop Bard received a BA from the University of Minnesota, Duluth in 1981; his Master of Divinity was earned at United Theological Seminary, Twin Cities 1984; and in 1994 he received a Ph.D. from Southern Methodist University with a focus on Christian ethics Bishop Bard has a wife, Julie, three adult children, and two grandchildren. In his free time, he enjoys music, reading, baseball, and walking outside.

Now Open at the Harbor Springs History Museum This groundbreaking traveling exhibition celebrates the rich artistic traditions of the Anishinaabe people through the intricate and powerful medium of porcupine quill art. It is the first major traveling exhibition dedicated to Anishinaabe porcupine quillwork and the first to be fully bilingual in Anishinaabemowin and English.  The exhibition features the work of contemporary Anishinaabe artists from Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Manitoulin Island, Canada, while honoring the generations of ancestors who preserved and passed down the skills required to master this distinctive art form. Visitors will encounter not only stunning works of art but also videos, images documenting the harvesting of materials, a recreation of an artist?s workstation, and a small area for children?s crafts related to the art form. We have partnered with Boyne Resorts to make this a very special event hosted at the Inn at Bay Harbor, 3600 Village Harbor Drive, Bay Harbor. For this luncheon, please note that registration and networking time will be from 11:15am-11:45am. At 11:45am we will sit down for the salad course and then the entrée will be served starting at noon. We will start the program at 12:15pm and wrap up by 1pm. Celebrate the 13 Annual Blessing of the Fleet with the Harbor Springs Area Historical Society! This History Talk is just one of the many events taking place during Fleet Week - visit HarborSpringsHistory.org to learn more. Join Bruce Lynn, Executive Director of the Great Lakes Shipwreck Historical Society, for a captivating presentation on the discovery of the Western Reserve. This 300-foot steel steamer, lost for 132 years, was recently found in 600 feet of water near Whitefish Point. Using side scan sonar and remotely operated vehicles, the GLSHS team confirmed the wreck’s identity, revealing new details about its tragic 1892 sinking. Lynn will share the ship’s remarkable history, the gripping tale of its sole survivor, and the challenges of deep-water shipwreck exploration in the Great Lakes.
