Continuing the story of the Black Medical Schools. See how historians including two college professors, two medical education administrator, one reporter, who is also a Southfield High alumnus, one Detroit high school student and one Southfield middle school student undertook this historical project dating back over 3000 years leading up to the health disparities we see today. They will talk about Black medical schools and their founding and the schools that are open today and look into the future of two new Black medical schools set to open.The exhibit of the Legacy of Black Medical Schools, which is on display until June 30, tells the forgotten stories of the 19 Black medical schools and departments that existed at one time in the United States. It describes the important roles Black medical schools played in the development and training of the physician workforce, treating Black patients, and why these schools are still needed today. The exhibit panels and displays contain photos, artifacts and information never before collectively presented by the handful of local historians who are experts on the Black medical schools and departments. Registration for September and December will open 60 days prior to the event. Enjoy music and art at the DIA! The Southfield Library and Southfield Parks & Recreation are excited to collaborate on this event. There will be a musical performance and afterwards you can experience the DIA through a self-guided tour. This event is FREE and made possible through funding to the DIA to support Senior programs in Oakland, Wayne and Macomb Counties. each trip date is limited to the first 55 people.
