Memories in the Making is a program at White Lake Community Library on Wednesday, June 10th, at 10am that offers individuals with cognition challenges such as Alzheimerâs disease or other dementias to experiment with self-expression through painting with watercolors. There is no experience needed. Weâll discuss a theme and photos will be provided for inspiration. Upon completing their painting, our artists will be asked to describe their artwork and their stories will be written down. Partners or caregivers are welcome (please register all attendees so we can prepare seating & supplies). Strong emphasis on having fun! Art making has been proven to be beneficial to those experiencing cognitive changes. Creating something of oneâs own bolsters confidence. It is relaxing to lean into the process of pushing color around the paper, and sharing it all within a group sparks social connection. Nancy Armitage will be facilitating. Nancy was the Memories in the Making Coordinator for the Alzheimerâs Association of southeastern Wisconsin for nine years. Since moving to Whitehall six years ago, her passion for the arts and dementia inspired her to start a chapter of SPARK!, a program for those with memory loss and their care partner(www.sparkprograms.org) at the Muskegon Art Museum, and was instrumental in the establishment of the first Memory Cafe in Muskegon.

Students will learn to make canes in polymer clay to create unique designs. What brand of clay is best to use, how to reduce the canes for smaller work, and color theory. The canes then can be used to create jewelry. Ages 16+. Casey Bemis has lived in the Whitehall area for over 10 years, working in her studio in the quiet woods just a few miles from Lake Michigan. Much of the work is inspired by nature, geometry and science. Utilizing her undergraduate degree in painting, she draws directly on sheets of metal to be etched and then made into unique jewelry. She also paints and finds some time to work on several novels.

You are invited to join a special Play and Learn program at the Lakeshore Museum Center on the second and fourth Thursdays. âLittle Learnersâ is a free literacy-based program for Muskegon County infants and toddlers ages 0-4.  During this program, participants will be invited to join us for story time and free play with themed activities.  Registration is required, but there is no charge for this program.     All attendees must register, including caregivers & siblings. This program will run for 50-60 minutes, 15-20 for an organized story time, and the rest for free play and a craft.  During this program, adults and children will have fun learning through songs, stories, sensory stations, motor skills stations, art, and more! We will have a free book for families to take home, as well as special crafts and activities to do.

The ACWL-Nuveen classroom studio will be available for you to work on creative projects. Participants are welcome to bring studio materials from home or have fun exploring the plethora of supplies on hand in the classroom! Participants can use the easels, paints, paper, brushes, yarn, wire, and more. A printing press is available to those with experience. About the Facilitators: Kathy Rogers and Chris Jones â both artists and ACWL-Nuveen volunteers â will be facilitating this open studio, with assistance from ACWL-Nuveen staff. Chris Jones was first introduced to the arts in the White Lake area through productions at the Playhouse at White Lake. He has explored the arts through a diverse range of disciplines and has a strong background in non-profit and retail. Chris enjoys taking classes through the ACWL-Nuveen, learning new creative skills, and sharing his knowledge with others. Kathy Rogers is a retired art teacher for Whitehall District Schools and has been an active member of the ACWL-Nuveen wearing many hats since 1999. As an artist herself, her paintings can be seen in the gallery. Kathy continues to be a life-long learner and teacher. ACWL-Nuveen classes are supported in part by CatchMark Technologies, the Michigan Arts & Culture Council, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Nuveen Benevolent Trust.
