For the Love of Birds: Owls, Our Nocturnal Neighbors

\ \ \ \ \ Location: Cordova Room, Placer County Health and Human Services Complex, 11434 B Avenue, Auburn. Doors open at 4:00 pm. Rudy Darling’s owl presentation begins at 4:30. The event is free and open to all. Bring your curiosity, your owl questions, and discover what’s happening in the foothills after dark! Owls have a reputation for being wise, mysterious, and just a little bit spooky. They’ve starred in myths, legends, books, and movies for centuries. But forget the Hollywood version for a moment. The real story of owls is even more intriguing—and some of our most enigmatic feathered neighbors are hunting right here in the Sierra foothills while we’re settling in for the night. Join Sierra Foothills Audubon Society on Tuesday, November 10, for the next installment of our For the Love of Birds series, featuring SFAS’s own Rudy Darling and a closer look at the fascinating world of owls. Rudy will explore the remarkable adaptations that make owls such successful nighttime hunters. Think of them as nature’s stealth specialists, equipped with an impressive set of survival “super powers” that help them hunt and thrive in the dark. We’ll discover what makes these birds so well suited to their nocturnal lifestyles—and why there’s much more to an owl than a pair of big eyes and a memorable hoot. And you don’t have to travel far to meet these nighttime neighbors. Ten owl species can be found within the Sierra Foothills Audubon Society’s area. From familiar nighttime neighbors to species whose calls might surprise you, we’ll get an up-close look at these mysterious birds and listen to their incredible vocalizations. Some of those sounds may be the last thing you’d expect an owl to say! The fun begins before the presentation, with displays and activities for curious minds of all ages. Explore nests and eggs, browse educational media resources and SFAS T-shirts, try interactive games, and get a close-up look at life-size owl models. After Rudy’s presentation, there will be more time to visit the tables, explore the displays, and satisfy your curiosity. Whether you’re an owl enthusiast, a budding naturalist, or someone who has heard a mysterious nighttime call and wondered, “Whooo was that?”, this program offers a fresh perspective on the feathered neighbors living just beyond our windows. So bring your curiosity, your questions, and your best owl impression. Rudy will handle the introductions!
