"Carrying Each Other" Group Exhibition

Lanesboro arts is excited to work in collaboration with Minnesotan Artists in various stages of their career to create this summer’s Gallery Exhibition, “Carrying Each Other,” a group exhibition celebrating creative labor and the many ways artists hold their communities together. Artists were asked to submit work exploring these visible and invisible forms of support, exchange, and mutual care that shape community life and why it matters to them. The work in this show ranges from quilted textiles and leatherwork, to paintings and photo collages, to interactive work and audio recordings, and much more. This exhibition features work from Shug Munic, Beth Stahn, Clara Wodny, Marge Buckley, Melissa Wray, Andy Kranz, Julia Meles, Lizzie Christian, Ollie Schminkey, Annabel Higgin-Houser, Isabella Dawis, Mary Bruno, Peter Haakon Thompson, and Kordula Coleman. What does it mean to Carry Each Other? As we have seen in our state, community care and support can be an active, artful, and defiant connector. Holding space, sharing burdens, bearing witness are all forms of deep care particularly held by artists and culture bearers as carriers of stories, traditions, imagination and memory. The loads carried by artists are shaped by experience: this show seeks to shine a light on the unequal loads and historic inequities placed upon marginalized communities as it celebrates community care. This show also holds space for carrying each other into a shared future. “Carrying Each Other” prioritizes artists who identify as LGBTQIA +, Two-Spirit, BIPOC, disabled, and/or rurally located artists (including those in southeast Minnesota). About the Artists Andy Kranz explores his experiences growing up on a farm through his surreal iconographic representations of the rural, driftless landscapes.Annabel Higgin-Houser creates dreamy scenes of a hopeful future or distant world where humans and all living things can thrive through quilting, applique, and crochet. https://annabelhigginhouser.carrd.co/Beth Stahn explores the tension bound up in nostalgia through character-driven, boldly staged photographs shaped by domestic life. https://www.bethstahn.com/Clara Wodny’s work develops out of a deep love for humanity and all the differences, quirks, and identities that make us who we are. Surprise Sculpture - June 16th

Explore creativity and collaboration with Lanesboro Arts! Since 2013, Surprise Sculpture has provided arts education opportunities for local students. For six weeks each summer, Lanesboro Arts staff and volunteers – many of whom are professional artists – lead participants in constructing large-scale, site-specific sculptures for public spaces using a mixture of upcycled, recycled, and fine art materials. The program serves over 150 rural youth and adults from Lanesboro, Harmony, Preston, Rushford, and beyond each year. This summer, Surprise Sculpture will be held every Tuesday for six weeks starting June 16 and ending July 21 at the St. Mane Theatre from 1 p.m. – 3 p.m. FREE for ages 5 to 15! Surprise Sculpture Dates for Summer 2026: June 16June 23June 30July 7July 14July 21Surprise Sculpture works towards building children’s art making skills as well as emphasizing collaboration and group decision making. Each project affords students the opportunity to learn about various principles and methods of art making. Attendees are routinely asked to work in large or small group settings, working together to create work that is for the community to enjoy rather than projects that are taken home at the end of each class. Program Goals1. Provide free, high-quality arts education experiences to rural youth 2. Encourage community pride and heightened cultural identity through public art 3. Teach creative problem-solving, inter-generational learning, and community service through hands-on art-making 4. Bring awareness to, and celebrate community assets and traditions 5. Increase the beauty of overlooked places in the community, encouraging walkability, and fostering public interaction. Preregistration is encouraged but not required. Rhythms on the Root: Mae Simpson

Lanesboro Arts is thrilled to present Mae Simpson for our 2026 Rhythms on the Root concert on Saturday, July 11th at 6:00 p.m. in Gateway Park. Rhythms on the Root activates the vibrant asset of Gateway Park as a place for the Lanesboro community and visitors to gather and celebrate with live music. Early bird tickets are $20 for individuals age 13+ (free for ages 12 and under, but ticket still required) and day-of tickets will be $30. Seating will be first come, first served general admission. Bring your own lawn chair or blanket to sit on in the park! In the event of rain the concert will be held at the St. Mane Theatre. Tickets will be available for purchase now at the link above. Mae Simpson led by her powerful vocals and magnetic stage presence. Bringing the audience to their feet with driving horns and drums. The Minneapolis-based singer songwriter weaves elements of funk, soul, pop, rock and country into her sound. Mae and her bandmates leave it all on the stage. Their high-energy show creates a powerful connection with the audience. Hailing originally from South Carolina, Mae has been passionate about singing and creating music for as long as she can remember. Her broad and soulful voice and deep well of creative energy are complemented by the musicianship and passion of the band. The band has released two EPs, Feel It Comin’ in 2018 and Did You Make it Back in 2020. Mae releases their Debut album “Chandelier & Bloom” September 2023. “Her raspy, dynamic voice is larger than life,” said Helen Teague of Minnesota Public Radio, “but not as large as her uncontainable energy that radiates from the stage.” Simpson has opened for acts including Dermot Kennedy, Grace Potter, Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe, Robert Clay, Ike Reilly, Langhorn Slim, RubbleBucket, and Pert Near Sandstone. She has performed multiple times on the iconic First Avenue main room, The Fillmore in Minneapolis, the Basilica Block Party, Live On King Street in Madison, Wisconsin, and the Blue Ox Music Festival. If you are a fan of artists like Alabama Shakes, Lake Street Dive and Bruce Springsteen, Mae Simpson is right up your alley.
