Join Ridgedale Library in the month of November to view a set of Kanopy streaming movies about Environmental Justice. Explore legal strategies and alliances used by Indigenous leaders and non-Native climate activists to protect the land from oil expansion, learn about the fight for water justice and the impact of the Clean Water Act, find out about the history of the Clean Air Act and today’s story of community action to battle environmental injustice that leaves many without clean air to breathe, and watch as a Philadelphia community fights to shut down an oil refinery in their neighborhood. Necessity This two-part film series unfolds around activists and their use of the necessity defense in jury trials in different regions of the U.S. after being charged with trespassing. Legal strategies in the climate movement take center stage as Indigenous leaders and Native and non-Native activists respond to the growing climate emergency. Upstream, Downriver Inspired by the 50th anniversary of the Clean Water Act, UPSTREAM, DOWNRIVER (2022) takes viewers on a powerful journey into the heart of the battle for water justice with a rousing and informative spotlight on policy interventions, urgent action, and innovative solutions for clean, safe water for all. Unbreathable UNBREATHABLE: THE FIGHT FOR HEALTHY AIR is a 30-minute film that weaves historical milestones of one of the nation's most critical health laws, the Clean Air Act, with current-day stories of environmental injustice and community action. Nearly half of all Americans still live in areas with unhealthy levels of air pollution, particularly those in poorer communities. On the Fenceline: A Fight for Clean Air ON THE FENCELINE: A FIGHT FOR CLEAN AIR is an urgent call for justice for Philadelphia's low-income communities. After years of living on the fenceline of the east coast's largest oil refinery and suffering from several critical health issues - including cancer, asthma, and COPD - residents have come together to stand up to CEOs and fight for their right to breathe. This program is part of Ridgedale Library’s “Striving for Resilience" climate series.
