Important InformationRegistration is not required but it is requested so we can notify participants in the event of a cancellation. Event OverviewDiscover the place where the story of Minneapolis begins. Dakota people call the Mississippi River “Haha Wakpa ” the river of the falls and refer to St. Anthony Falls as Owámniyomni. This guided walking tour explores the cultural historical and natural significance of the only true waterfall along the 2 350‑mile Mississippi River. You’ll visit key archaeological and historic sites and enjoy expansive views of the falls from the Stone Arch Bridge.Tours begin at the bandstand in Father Hennepin Bluff Park. The route includes stops along the Stone Arch Bridge and surrounding riverfront where a ranger will share stories about the area’s past present and future. Accessibility & AccommodationsThe walking route is on level paved trails and is fully accessible.If you require additional accommodations please contact the park in advance at [email protected] so staff can help ensure a comfortable experience. What to ExpectThe tour covers up to 1.25 miles (approximately 2 km). Some areas have limited shade. Wear weather‑appropriate clothing and comfortable footwear.

Important InformationLimited seating is available. If you are unable to attend please cancel your registration so another participant may join. Registrants will be placed in their selected boat type though assignments may be adjusted for safety. Event OverviewExplore a unique area of your national park with a National Park Service ranger. This guided paddle travels through the quiet back channels of the Vermillion River’s floodplain forest an excellent place to observe wildlife such as bald eagles great blue herons prothonotary warblers and muskrats. Routes vary throughout the summer as water levels change. Registration IncludesOne seat in the selected kayak or canoe a paddle and a personal flotation device (PFD).Canoe and tandem kayak spots must be booked with a partner. Canoes and tandem kayaks may not be reserved by a single participant. Weather & PreparationPrograms proceed rain or shine unless heavy rain or lightning requires cancellation. Decisions are made at least two hours prior to start time. Please bring sun protection insect repellent rain gear snacks and water. Binoculars are encouraged. Avoid leaving valuables in your vehicle. Additional DetailsPersonal boats cannot be accommodated.Participants must be comfortable maneuvering a kayak or canoe in moving water. This program is not recommended for first-time paddlers. Beginners may prefer the Pickerel Lake Paddle Share station. Age RequirementsParticipants must be 18 or older. Youth under 18 may attend only if seated in a tandem kayak or canoe with an adult from the same household.

Depending on weather limited space may also be available on the lower deck for all cruises.The two September dates (September 19 and September 26) take place after sunset. A limited twenty‑five (25) advanced tickets are available for the September dates. Remaining tickets are first‑come first‑served at the event site. Event OverviewExperience the Mississippi River on a ranger-led riverboat cruise departing from Watergate Marina in Saint Paul. Guided by a National Park Service ranger this program highlights the natural cultural and historical stories that have shaped the iconic Mississippi River. Because each ranger brings their own background and interpretive approach the themes and stories shared will vary offering a unique experience on each cruise.As the boat travels upstream you'll take in views of Bdote the confluence of the Mississippi and Minnesota Rivers. Often described as one of the most important cultural landscapes in the region Bdote is central to Dakota history and identity. Depending on the ranger interpretations may explore Dakota origin stories long-standing connections to the river and the ongoing significance of this place today.Approaching Lock and Dam No. 1 you'll learn how engineering efforts reshaped the river to support navigation transforming both the landscape and the ecosystems along its banks. These changes influenced commerce river communities and the balance between human use and the river’s natural dynamics.Other stories may touch on early explorers who traveled through the park’s corridor the growth of river towns like Saint Paul the development of industry and transportation and the diverse wildlife that depend on the Mississippi River’s habitats. Throughout the journey shifting light and scenery provide opportunities to observe birds river bluffs and urban riverfronts from a fresh perspective.Join us for an engaging and reflective cruise where national history local stories and the living river come together.

Half the park is after dark! Mississippi National River and Recreation Area and Mississippi Park Connection invite you to explore Crosby Farm Regional Park at night. The NPS and partners are hosting activities that engage the natural world through science and culture. Tap into your nocturnal side to discover the magic in a floodplain forest and along the Mississippi River.Past events have included ranger-led walks, Junior Ranger activities, moon journaling from a Dakota knowledge keeper, bat monitoring, insect finding, night sky viewing, a beach bonfire with s'mores, and more! More details about drop-in and scheduled activities are coming soon including a nighttime river cruise. Register for the cruise at go.nps.gov/miss_events!Mark your calendars: Park After Dark returns Saturday, September 19, 2026. The event will be hosted from 7 until 10:30 pm.
