Sean Gaskell returns to the Great Falls Public Library to perform his kora music!  Gaskell performs songs on the kora – a 21 stringed West African harp. He studied under the extensive instruction of  Moriba Kuyateh and the late Malamini Jobarteh in Gambia,  and both Youssoupha Cissokho and Mamadou Cissokho in Senegal.  The kora is traditionally played by oral historians known as Griots.  Many songs featured on the kora preserve an 800 year history dating back to the founding of the Mande empire. Gaskell has presented adult, youth and family programs at over 350 libraries and a multitude of k-12 schools, colleges, universities and assisted living facilities throughout the United States and Canada. The show will be moved inside the Cordingley Room if there is bad weather that evening.

Native author Julian Brave NoiseCat joins us at the Great Falls Public Library to discuss his latest book We Survived The Night. Cassiopeia Books will be on hand to sell copies of Brave NoiseCat’s book after the talk, as well! JULIAN BRAVE NOISECAT is a writer, Academy Award-nominated filmmaker, champion powwow dancer, and student of Salish art and history. His writing has appeared in dozens of publications, including The New York Times, The Washington Post and The New Yorker. NoiseCat has been recognized with numerous awards, including the 2022 American Mosaic Journalism Prize and many National Native Media Awards. He was a finalist for the Livingston Award and multiple Canadian National Magazine Awards and was named to the TIME100 Next list in 2021. His first documentary, Sugarcane, was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary. Directed alongside Emily Kassie, Sugarcane premiered at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, where NoiseCat and Kassie won the Directing Award for U.S. Documentary. NoiseCat is a proud member of the Canim Lake Band Tsq’escen and descendant of the Lil’wat Nation of Mount Currie. We Survived the Night is his first book.   We then invite everyone to join us later in the evening for a FREE showing of Sugarcane at 6 pm at the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center, with a question and answer period afterward with Brave NoiseCat, who served as a producer on the film. In 2021, evidence of unmarked graves was discovered on the grounds of an Indian residential school run by the Catholic Church in Canada, sparking a national outcry and setting off searches across North America. Along the north bank of the Missouri River, in Great Falls, Montana, there was once an industrial complex: the Great Falls Reduction Department of the Anaconda Copper Mining Company. From 1892 to 1982, it was a definitive silhouette on the skyline, used as a sign that travelers were close to home. At its peak, one-third of the world’s copper was smelted, refined, and molded here for direct consumption in line with the Anaconda Copper Mining Company’s slogan, “From Mine to Consumer.” Today, its existence has been wiped from the landscape, leaving a Superfund site that will take several decades to restore. Though the buildings, machinery, and workers are now gone, the memory is still imprinted heavily on the community. About the Author: The archives and operations manager of The History Museum & Research Center/Cascade County Historical Society, Megan Sanford has created a specialized pictorial tour of the Anaconda Copper Mining Company Collection. Having collected objects, photographs, testimonies, and memories over the last half century, The History Museum & Research Center stewards the story of the Great Falls Reduction Department Plant and endeavors to share the tales of its workers and the work they did for the world.  Cassiopeia Books will be on site selling copies of Megan’s book.
