Dr. Carlton Shield Chief Gover is scheduled to present Guided by Tradition: Using Pawnee Oral Histories to Rethink Radiocarbon Dating on the Great Plains on Tuesday, August 11 at 7:00 p.m. in the amphitheater behind the Scotts Bluff National Monument Visitor Center located at 190276 Old Oregon Trail in Gering, NE.Shield Chief Gover, a citizen of the Pawnee Nation and Assistant Professor of Anthropology at the University of Kansas, will examine how Indigenous oral traditions can inform archaeological methods, particularly radiocarbon sampling strategies. Drawing on research from Central Great Plains town sites, it demonstrates how culturally grounded approaches reshape our understanding of chronology, community formation, and ethnogenesis.This program has been made possible through the generous support of Black Hills Parks and Forests Association, the official non-profit partner of Scotts Bluff National Monument. In the event of inclement weather, the program will be moved inside the Scotts Bluff National Monument Visitor Center Theater.
