Join us for a workshop all about landscaping for birds! This class/talk (free to the public!) will go over everything you need in your garden space to attract birds and stimulate a community of wildlife, no matter the size or space. Whether you have a window box, raised bed, or acre of backyard, this talk is for you. This talk will include habitat requirements for birds (shelter, food, and water), planning and planting, and how meeting these basic requirements could certify your garden space as a National Wildlife Federation wildlife habitat.  The class leader is Ashley Walker, an avid birder and backyard gardener with years of experience in both topics. Ashley leads bird walks with Northwest Nevada Bird Society and is a mother and pet owner, and wants to share with you how to optimize your space in a beautiful and ecological way.  Register Here!

Ecuador concentrates exceptional geographic diversity within a small area. The Andes divide the country into distinct west- and east-slope systems, linking the Chocó lowlands, inter-Andean valleys, high-elevation påramo, and the upper Amazon Basin. Steep elevation gradients, active volcanism, and equatorial climate patterns create rapid habitat transitions that have driven high levels of speciation and habitat specialization, resulting in close to 1700 recorded bird species. This presentation connects those physical and ecological processes to the bird diversity we encounter in the field and explains why Ecuador consistently ranks among the top countries globally for birders. We will be leaving from Gardnerville at 5:45 am to give us plenty of time to travel to the lek and get in position before the birds start displaying/lekking. The spot will be about 30-40 min drive from our meeting place. This introductory session will be led by Outreach Biologist Ned Bohman and will cover Pinyon Jay biology and the history of GBBOâs Community Science Initiative. The session includes a 30-minute presentation on conservation concerns and program background, followed by 30 minutes of Q&A and discussion. Please visit the Pinyon Jay Community Science Hub and download the free Survey123 app prior to the presentation: Pinyon Jay Community Science Hub A follow-up field session on April 11th will offer hands-on experience using Survey123, with opportunities to look for Pinyon Jays in the field, followed by a casual volunteer meetup. All are welcomeânew and seasoned volunteers alikeâto attend the field session, the meetup, or both. Details coming soon. In 2021, GBBO launched the Pinyon Jay Community Science Initiative with Northern Nevada Bird Alliance as a key partner. River Fork Ranch Difficulty: 4mi EASY - level dirt trail Leader: Jo Ann Cobb When: Friday APR 3, 8a to ~3hrs, ebird hotspot Photos: byjcb This is an out and back walk along the West Fork of the Carson River in Douglas County.  We should find Geese and possibly young, some Duck, Grebes, maybe Sandpipers, Woodpeckers, Kinglets, Raptors, Sparrows, and Finches.  This is the time of year for Flycatchers like Kingbirds, Orioles, Phoebes, also Blackbirds, Yellowthroat, a few Warblers, and we usually find Sandhill Cranes.  On this walk we have found hundreds of Ibis as well as Bald Eagles and other Hawks. Swan Lake Difficulty: 2-3mi MED - level uneven trail along the shoreline Leader: Jeff Bleam When: Friday APR 3, 8:00a to ~3hrs Photos: byjcb Description: Be prepared to get your feet wet.  We will start at the boardwalk area and search the shoreline for Rails, Blackbirds, Sandpipers, Ibis, Egrets, Heron, and Pelicans.  The ducks will be starting to migrate but there should be numerous species still around such as Teal and possibility even Blue-winged Teal.  There may be numerous shorebirds, depending on the lake level,  like Plovers, Dowitches, Willets, Curlews, Godwit, Dunlin, and possibly some rarities like Red Knot, Turnstones, and Sanderling.  There could be rare Gulls and Terns like Common, Black, and Caspian.  I have seen as many as 79 species in one day at the lake. Registration is not yet available. Members will receive notice of field trip registration via email.

Join us and experience an early morning walk exploring the varied habitat in and around the Wilbur D. May Arboretum and Botanical Garden. With our guide, Lauren Whitenack, from the Northwest Nevada Bird Alliance, youâll observe different bird species and other wildlife. The Arboretum has more than 13 acres of wetlands, woodlands and gardens, which make for a great opportunity to view the plethora of birds that call this home. Bring your binoculars! If you need to borrow binoculars, please let us know during registration checkout so we know how many extras to bring. Mark your calendars for the first Sunday of each month through November 5th. Enjoy a walk, take in beautiful scenery and wildlife and experience changes in the Arboretum through the seasons.
