Speaker: Joe Barnes from U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Peregrine Falcon: Peregrine falcons were not known to nest within Nevada in sizable numbers prior to the well-documented impacts they suffered from DDT in the mid-20th century.  They have since rebounded on a near global scale and have been considered one of the true environmental success stories over the past 30 years or so.  However, in recent years multiple breeding population studies across the northern hemisphere now suggest there is renewed cause for concern.  I will discuss their return as a breeding species in Nevada since 1985, and more specifically details about my own statewide research over the past 22 years.  On the one hand, I will describe an increase from 10 to at least 86 known nesting territories during my period of study, with information I have learned about their breeding success and diet.  On the other hand, I will share what I have learned about the ubiquitous presence of mercury contamination they experience in Nevada, and the very steep drop in annual territory occupancy in recent years.  I am excited to share with you what I have been learning, and I feel it is important to not take the continued conservation of this charismatic species for granted.
