When: Sunday AUG 17, 8:30a to ~10:30a Leader: Jaida Marinas From the parking area, we will look at the ponds for Ducks, Geese, and Cormorants.  A trail winds through the riparian area along the Truckee River and we should see Warblers, Towhees, Raptors, Waterfowl, Flycatchers, Bluebirds, Sapsuckers, Woodpeckers and maybe Dippers.  Swallows should be numerous and there is a chance of seeing Vaux Swift. About Jaida: Jaida is a UNR alumnus with a degree in Biology and a minor in Analytical Chemistry. Hobbies include baking, writing, and birding. This presentation will begin with an overview of Colombiaâs exceptional bird diversityâhighlighting the three main factors that make it the most bird-rich country on Earth. The second half will focus on our upcoming birding tour, offering a general overview of the key locations weâll visit across the Andes and showing a selection of bird species we may encounter along the way. When: Thursday AUG 28, 6:45p to ~9p Trip Leader: Margaret Lord We will begin the walk at the cement picnic tables in the lawn at the start of the path. Weâll start with an introduction on bat biology, misconceptions, and the history of the roost at the McCarran bridge. Then we can plan to take a nature walk down the paved trail through Cottonwood Park, ending at the bridge where we will watch the bats emerge! It is a short walk to the bridge, about 15 minutes to and from the bridge from the parking area. Iâd suggest bringing water, a flashlight, and a camera if youâd like to take pictures or videos of the emergence! You will be able to see the bats without a light, but some people like to bring them for the walk back! Click Here to Register.

Every fall, Pinyon Jays harvest and cache as many pine nuts as they can from ripe pinyon pine cones as a strategy to survive harsh winters. Pinyon pine produces variable amounts of cones and nuts from year to year. Tracking the availability of this important food resource is one important piece of the Pinyon Jay conservation puzzle.
