Bob Sheppard speaks nationally about his father, who served during WWll with the unit that has come to be known as the Tuskegee Airmen.  His dad, James A. Sheppard Jr. grew up in Harlem and lived much of his life in the greater Portland area, making him one of three men from Maine with connections to the all-black unit of the US Army Air Force. Bob also includes some newly discovered information on a Portsmouth High/ UNH grad who served a critical role in the battle against the axis powers.  The presentation is suitable for 8th graders on up, including powerpoint slides and a portion of a documentary where Bob's father James, talks about leaving NYC for Alabama, training in the segregated South and then his time overseas during the conflict. Bob Sheppard is a native of Brooklyn NY, whose family moved to Maine in the 1970âs when his dad, was a member of the famed Tuskegee Airmen was promoted within the Federal Aviation Administration. His mother helped Shirley Chisholm in her successful Congressional campaign and later became the first person of color appointed to the Maine State Board of Education serving under two governors. A graduate of the University of Southern Maine, Bobâs professional career in Communications included more than a decade as a broadcast journalist here, in NH and MA.  A father of two thirty-somethings and resident of Kittery, he co-produced a documentary on his fatherâs WWII experiences, and in the last 12 months has made presentations on the Tuskegee Airmen to audiences in a half dozen states. The book was longlisted for the 2025 American Library of Paris Book Award.  Young, an award-winning journalist and author, is a graduate of Harvard College in the History of Art and Architecture and holds a masterâs degree from Columbia Universityâs Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation, where she is a Professor of Architecture. Boston Light â the first established Light Station in colonial America â began lighting the way for safe navigation into the fledging maritime port of Boston in 1716. The Fresnel Lens in the lantern room and fog signal apparatus situated on Little Brewster Island at the entrance to Boston Harbor continues as an active Coast Guard maintained aid-to-navigation, today. However, its notoriety in the maritime community as the âthe last manned Coast Guard Light Stationâ in the country has come to closure with the retirement of Sally Snowman, its 70th keeper. A power-point presentation provides photos of Boston Lightâs 307 years of history and few photo anecdotes of Sallyâs experiences as a 21st Century Keeper.  Sally will also be joined by her husband Jay Thomson and Lighthouse Historian Jeremy D'Entremont. This month we're all about John Adams: His vice presidency was the only time the president and VP were from different parties. He was the first POTUS to live in the White House; and he never enslaved anyone. About Heather: Heather Rogers isnât a historian, an academic, or an impartial storyteller⌠but she has read more than one book about every U.S. president. Out of spite. She was dubbed âAmericaâs Preeminent Presidential Doodlerâ by one of her favorite biographers and sheâs been repeating it ever since. When sheâs not reading or doodling history books, sheâs a freelance graphic designer, illustrator, and content creator. To keep her interest during her accidental spite project, Heather Rogers filled hundreds of sketchbook pages doodling her way through presidential biographies. Doing so heightened her curiosity and turned her into an insufferable presidential nerd. Along the way, she discovered unexpected threads connecting seemingly unconnected people, times, and events. She canât get enough of the weird trivia, coincidences, and quirks. Like the fact that English wasnât the first language of the first president born in the U.S. Or that a three-part plan was proposed to bring George Washington back to life.
