Join us for a program centered on historical true crime in New Hampshire. True Crime History brings Murder and Mayhem to New Hampshire In Murder and Mayhem: True Crime in New Hampshire 1883-1915, veteran author and genealogist Milli Knudsen looks at the shocking history of true crime in New Hampshire. In the years from 1883 to 1915, the ways to commit crimes and the ways to investigate crime changed dramatically. Knudsen has captured fascinating stories from those years in her seventh book. âMurder and Mayhem is both riveting reading and an agonizing reminder that the villains and monsters of our troubled time didnât invent dishonesty and rage and hatred. Milli Knudsen has done an extraordinary jobâŚproviding enough fascinating stories to fill a dozen seasons of a Netflix streamer,â says Ernest Thompson, the playwright, actor, director, and Academy Award-winner for adapted screenplay of âOn Golden Pond.â You'll find the astonishing true crime answers to questions like these: Two immigrant lumberjacks have a fiddling contest. After teaching and then running her own genealogical research firm, Milli Knudsen began volunteering with the NH Cold Case Unit in 2019, which led to becoming the paralegal/data analyst in 2022, and in 2024 to also working with the State of NHâs Major Crimes Unit. Murder and Mayhem is based on primary sources, including the second prison registry of the New Hampshire State Prison, at the New Hampshire State Archives, and New Hampshire court records of the time. From the late 1880s to the early 1900s, emerging forensic science became a valuable tool. In those pre-internet days, newspapers widely covered the crimes and trials and created an audience of true crime readers, much like what we have today. Murders, robberies, the rise of insurance coverage and therefore arson, the reaction to the 1915 influenza outbreak (including resistance to mask wearing), sex crimes and the advent of financial crimes are all included. Murder and Mayhem tells the stories behind the headlines and gives you a glimpse into life in New England in the years leading up to World War I. He will be discussing his latest book, "New Yorkâs Secret Subway: The Underground Genius of Alfred Beach and the Origins of Mass Transit" -  a book that will captivate readers and provide historical context for todayâs clashes between public interests and powerful business and political groups. Alfred Beach had the perfect solution: build a giant pneumatic tube underneath Broadway from the Battery to Harlem. Air pressure would shoot passengers up and down the island in clean, quiet carriages. But Beach was up against the operators of the horse-drawn streetcars and the politicians in their pay, most conspicuously William M. Tweed, the notorious âBossâ of Tammany Hall. New Yorkâs Secret Subway: The Underground Genius of Alfred Beach and the Origins of Mass Transit tells a classic story of good versus evil, pitting the mild-mannered Beach, a visionary inventor and entrepreneur, against the oafish tyrant Tweed, the exemplar of corruption in the Gilded Age. It also tells the story of one of the most astonishing feats of engineering in American history, the surreptitious creation of the nationâs first operational subway. New York seemed destined to become the second city in the world with a comprehensive subway system, after London. Unfortunately, political lethargy and greed would conspire to deny the city a subway for another thirty years. Yet Alfred Beach still proved conclusively the feasibility of underground railways in Manhattan, and paved the way for modern mass transportation systems. About the Author: Matthew Algeo writes about interesting stuff. Or, as his mom liked to say, Matthew is an award-winning journalist and author. His latest book is New York's Secret Subway: The Underground Genius of Alfred Beach and the Origins of Mass Transit.â He is the author of seven other books, including Harry Trumanâs Excellent Adventure: The True Story of a Great American Road Trip, which the Washington Post named one of the best books of 2009. In addition to reporting and writing, Matthew has held jobs as a convenience store clerk, a Halloween costume salesman, and a hot dog vendor in a traveling circus. His current gig is hosting Morning Edition on Kansas Public Radio. Matthew holds a degree in folklore from the University of Pennsylvania. His wife, Allyson, is a retired U.S. Foreign Service officer. They have lived in Bamako, Rome, Ulan Bator, Maputo, Sarajevo, and Gaborone. The Warsaw Ghetto Uprising is one of the most storied events of the Holocaust, yet previous accounts of which have almost entirely focused on its male participants. In The Girl Bandits of the Warsaw Ghetto: The True Story of Five Courageous Young Women Who Sparked an Uprising, Holocaust historian Elizabeth Hyman introduces five young, courageous Polish Jewish womenâknown as âthe girlsâ by the leadership of the resistance and âbanditsâ by their Nazi oppressorsâwho were central to the Jewish resistance as fighters, commanders, couriers, and smugglers. We'll take a deep dive into our women heroes - what was their motivation, how did they succeed in their endeavors, what was the impact of their work? About the book: Zivia Lubetkin, the most senior female member of the Jewish Fighting Organization Command Staff in Warsaw and a reluctant legend in her own time, who was immortalized by her code name, "Celina". Vladka Meed, who smuggled dynamite into and illegal literature out of the Warsaw Ghetto in preparation for the uprising. Dr. Idina âInkaâ Blady-Schweiger, a young medical student who became a reluctant angel of mercy. Tema Schneiderman, a tall, beautiful and fearless young woman who volunteered for smuggling and rescue missions across Nazi-occupied Eastern Europe. Tossia Altman, a heroic courier with a poetic soul, who helped bring arms into the Warsaw Ghetto, fought in the Uprising, and ferried communiques to the outside world. Interspersed with the stories of other Jewish women who resisted, The Girl Bandits of the Warsaw Ghetto rescues these women from the shadows of time, bringing to light their resilience, bravery, and cunning in the face of unspeakable hardshipâinspiring stories of courage, daring, and resistance that must never be forgotten. About the Author:  The granddaughter and great-granddaughter of Polish Jews who fled their homeland in 1939 and ultimately made their way, as refugees, to the United States, Elizabeth Hyman earned dual masterâs degrees in History and Library Science from the University of Maryland-College Park, and has written the history blog, âHISTORICITY", since 2011. She lives in New Paltz, New York.
