It is fun to picture Henry Thoreau and Emily Dickinson both sitting at their desks in Concord and Amherst, MA, just seventy miles apart from one another, writing for themselves and, ultimately, for the ages. On the surface, they were so different. Thoreau could spend pages describing a leaf or a woodchuck, while Dickinson could, in just seven lines, tackle Art or Death or God. Yet they both had a genius for seeking the Truth and their words richly reward our attention. David Grant is a former English teacher and foundation president who currently lives in Strafford, where he serves as Town Moderator. In his retirement, he devotes his time to two outstanding Upper Valley institutions: Northern Stage and Osher. David is the author of The Social Profit Handbook (2015), which focuses on how mission-driven organizations can best measure their impact and success. He has performed around the world in a one-man show as Mark Twain. Note: This course is part of Osher's "A Little of This and That" series. We’ve gathered some of our finest Study Leaders from across the fields of science, religion, culture, literature, music, and hands-on crafting. If you’ve never taken an Osher class, try us out and discover what makes the Osher experience so rewarding. Chandler Center for the Arts is excited to announce this year’s The Next Generation concert. On Saturday evening, May 16, five young classical musicians from high schools and homeschools across Vermont and New Hampshire will showcase their artistry, with some making their debuts on the Chandler stage. The concert begins at 7:00 PM and will also feature an ensemble performance with 16 students from the Upper Valley Music Center. A reception to greet the artists will follow the performance. In 2007, to kick off Chandler’s centennial celebration, pianist Christopher O’Riley brought his acclaimed NPR Boston program From the Top to the Chandler stage, drawing enthusiastic audiences. Among the eight performing teenagers, only two were from the local area; the others came from Chicago, Pittsburgh, and New York. The format proved so appealing that Chandler created its own version, featuring young musicians from the region. For this concert, the area’s top music teachers have recommended students whose accomplishments deserve special recognition. These performers have been selected through a competitive audition process.

Upper Valley Music Center’s Suzuki program presents the annual Suzuki Showcase concert featuring music from across the ocean. This concert features more than 100 students ages 3-18 performing on cello, viola, and violin, plus special guest balafon master Mamadou Diabate as the culmination of an educational residency. The concert will bring together Mamadou Diabate’s tradition of West African music from his home country of Burkina Faso with other world music traditions, classical repertoire, and American fiddle tunes. This event is the culmination of UVMC’s Sing & Play Festival, a celebration of music-making in our community.
