Chase’s Mill Presents ~Contra Dancing in NewHampshire: Then and NowWith Dudley Laufman Chase’s Mill in Alstead, NH, is happy to present a talk by Dudley Laufman sponsored by the NH Humanities To Go program. Since the late 1600s, the lively tradition of contra dancing has kept people of all ages swinging and sashaying in barns, town halls, and schools around the state. Contra dancing came to New Hampshire by way of the English colonists and remains popular in many communities. Mill Hollow and East Alstead have hosted dances over the years on a dance pavilion, at the church and at Chase’s Mill.. Presenter Dudley Laufman brings this tradition to life with stories, poems, and recordings of callers, musicians, and dancers, past and present. Live music, always integral to this dance form, will be played on the fiddle and melodeon. The presentation will be followed by a dance with music by local musician Randy Miller. Talk is free, dance by donation. Pre-registration is encouraged at chasesmill.org. Chase’s Mill is located at 801 Forest Road in Alstead, NH.
