Regular hours are 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (last trail admission at 3:30 p.m.) For nearly 60 years, Squam Lakes Natural Science Center has been a favorite New England family destination, bringing joy, connection, wonder, and discovery to generations of visitors through live animal exhibits, natural science education programs, guided Squam Lake Cruises and the vibrant charm of Kirkwood Gardens. The Science Center is Certified Sensory Inclusive by KultureCity. The 3/4 mile live animal exhibit trail features coyote, fisher, red fox, bobcat, black bear, mountain lion, river otters, white-tailed deer, various owls and raptors, and more. Plan at least two and a half hours to walk the animal exhibit trail, which meanders through open meadows, mature forests, and marsh boardwalks on a packed gravel path. Trail rates for 2025 are $28 for adults; $26 for seniors (age 65+); $22 for youth (ages 3-15); free for children 2 and under and Science Center members. The Science Center is Certified Sensory Inclusive by KultureCity. The 3/4 mile live animal exhibit trail features coyote, fisher, red fox, bobcat, black bear, mountain lion, river otters, white-tailed deer, various owls and raptors, and more. Join the Squam Lakes Association on June 7, from 9AM - 2PM, as we celebrate National Trails Day by cleaning up a section of our hiking network near Center Sandwich. National Trails Day recognizes the incredible benefits federal, state, and local trails provide for recreation and exposure to nature. We will be doing a ~2 mile hike up Wentworth Trail to the summit of Mt Israel (~4 miles out and back). From there we will make our way down, clearing water bars as we descend. We will meet at Mead Base on Diamond Ledge Road and start our day from there. If participants are able, we recommend bringing tools such as hoes and maddocks and PPE such as work gloves and eye protection. The SLA will be providing tools and PPE, but these are limited. We recommend bringing plenty of water, snacks, lunch, extra layers, hiking boots, sunscreen, and bug spray. This event is weather dependent. We will reach out if conditions become unsafe for the day. For more than 75 years, the trails in the Squam Lakes region have been maintained by the Squam Lakes Association. There are 57 miles of hiking trails and 3 miles of mountain bike trails in the SLA network, and the SLA performs over 2,500 hours of trail construction and maintenance each year with help from Volunteer Trail Adopters. The Squam Lakes Association is dedicated to conserving for public benefit the natural beauty, peaceful character and resources of the watershed. In collaboration with local and state partners the SLA promotes the protection, careful use and shared enjoyment of the lakes, mountains, forests, open spaces and wildlife of the Squam Lakes Region.

In this class students will learn the craft of felting to create a beautiful shadowbox framed image. Using your own picture for inspiration or follow along with some supplied at class, turn a 5X5 shadow box into a beautiful shelf sitter or wall hanging. The picture comes to life as you create a background and then bring it forward with dimensional felting. Great for beginners and experienced felters as well. Students may bring an inspirational photo, but some will be supplied and all other materials will be supplied. This class is good for those new to needle felting, but all skill levels are welcome. In the last 50 years, scientists estimate that North America has lost roughly 3 billion birds, meaning that there are only three quarters as many birds around as there used to be. New Hampshire Audubon has been tracking bird populations for almost as long, and in our “State of the Birds” report we present a summary of how birds are doing here in the Granite State. Almost 300 species occur regularly here, and this report outlines general population trends, major threats facing birds and their habitats, and some of the conservation strategies that might help them recover. The bad news is that birds are declining here as well. The good news is that there are things we can do about it. Cost: Free, but space is limited. Advance registration is required.
