Ready to explore the scenic northern end of the Squam watershed? Join Diego and the LRCC team for an immersive winter trek through Belknap Woods. This 1.9 mile loop offers a gentle yet beautiful journey through diverse forest landscapes and important wetland habitats, providing a unique look at the region's quiet winter beauty. Please arrive at the Belknap Woods trailhead with a positive spirit, plenty of water/snacks, and your full winter hiking kit, including traction. Because parking is limited at this trailhead, we strongly encourage participants to carpool from the Squam Lakes Association building. If you're interested in carpooling or following the LRCC guides from the SLA building, please meet us there 20 minutes prior to the program start time. We look forward to seeing you out on the trail! Participants should be sure to have appropriate attire and layering for winter hiking. Extra layers, food/water, water resistant hiking boots, and snowshoes and/or microspikes may be needed depending on conditions. The SLA can provide snowshoes & microspikes if needed. Other snow hiking gear may be available upon request. Not sure what to pack? Check out our Winter Day Hiking Checklist for some ideas. Feel free to reach out to the SLA with any questions! While it makes spoken words sing like sauntering music, Robert Frost’s poetry can also help us appreciate the rigor of life on a New England farm in the early 20th century (hint: it was hard). In an exploration of both New Hampshire history and Frost’s poetry, author and poet Jeffrey Zygmont recites a selection of Frost’s poems about farming. Alongside each recitation, he provides background on Frost’s life, offering insight into the poem’s origins, and commentary on the work’s artistic beauty, as well as the experiences and emotions it expresses. Join us Saturday March 28th from 7:30-10:30 am at the Squam Lakes Association to learn how to download and use “eBird©” and “Merlin Bird ID©” apps and bird in the digital age! These apps can help you identify new birds based on calls and looks, find new bird species in your area, log data contributing to citizen science, and so much more! This Adventure Ecology will consist of an app rundown on how to download and use the apps, followed by a field portion where you will test new skills in a prime spring birding location. Join LRCC birder and guide Kevin Jones as he assists you in becoming a 21st century birder. C Put your lucky boots on and come shake your shamrock!  Learn a new jig and dance to great music of all genres.  Whether you're a seasoned dancer or just stepping onto the floor for the first time, you'll love it!  Start the night with beginner friendly line dance lessons with 603 Line Dance Company, some of the best line dance instructors around! Perfect for brand new dancers to seasoned veterans. Lessons followed by requests and open dancing to popular country and modern hits. Our well-trained instructors will have you stepping all night long. Dress for the theme if you like: All Things Green: emerald, lime, neon, shamrocks, lucky charms, sequins, glitter, or Irish-inspired accessories. Don't Dance? No problem, Full-Service bar is open with our Themed Cocktails and Mocktails, and you can watch the fun. All ages event. Under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Must be 21+ to drink. Mark your calendars, crystal lovers, collectors, and stone-hearted magick-makers... because Sunday, March 29th from 11 AM to 5 PM is shaping up to be a truly enchanted day at Silver Sage Cottage.   We’re delighted to welcome Gabriel Godwyne of Westminster, Vermont, known as The Minister of Minerals, for a full-day in-store event devoted to the beauty, mystery, and power of the mineral kingdom.   Gabriel has been immersed in the world of rocks, crystals, and geodes for many years, and he’ll be arriving with an incredible assortment of treasures, from beloved favorites to jaw-dropping statement pieces that are sure to make a few hearts skip a beat. He also brings a deep well of knowledge, earned through long experience and years of traveling to major rock shows around the country, sourcing from highly reputable places.   Expect sparkle, wonder, conversation, and the kind of finds that make you feel like the bones of the earth have chosen to speak.  We’re still unveiling the finer details, so stay tuned... but trust us, this is one you’ll want on your calendar.

Did you know each full moon has a name? April’s full moon is the pink moon named after the moss pink flower that blooms in the spring. Come join the Squam Lakes Association for a 1.8 mile round-trip moonlit hike to the South Peak of Whitten Woods from 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM on Wednesday, April 1st! Starting at the Whitten Woods Trailhead parking area, we will take the South Peak Trail up to the summit. We will moon gaze, stargaze, and listen for nocturnal critters before making our descent back down to the trailhead. Participants will meet at the Whitten Woods Parking Area at 6:45 PM, located off Highland Street in Ashland, NH. All are welcome on this guided hike, but it is recommended for participants that are comfortable with uneven terrain and slight to moderate changes in elevation. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Please make sure to bring lots of water, snacks to enjoy at the summit, a headlamp, and weather appropriate clothing and hiking gear. This includes extra layers, rain gear, a hat, gloves, extra socks, etc. For more information, or to sign up for this guided hike, visit the SLA website (squamlakes.org) or contact the SLA directly (603-968-7336). The SLA also offers other guided hikes and Adventure Ecology programming throughout the year. These free programs are open to the public and cover a variety of nature and conservation related topics. The Adventure Ecology programs are presented by the LRCC AmeriCorps members at the SLA who perform important conservation work in support of the Association’s mission. The Squam Lakes Association is dedicated to conserving for public benefit the natural beauty, peaceful character and resources of the watershed. In collaboration with local and state partners the SLA promotes the protection, careful use and shared enjoyment of the lakes, mountains, forests, open spaces and wildlife of the Squam Lakes Region.
