Regular hours are 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (last trail admission at 3:30 p.m.) For nearly 60 years, Squam Lakes Natural Science Center has been a favorite New England family destination, bringing joy, connection, wonder, and discovery to generations of visitors through live animal exhibits, natural science education programs, guided Squam Lake Cruises and the vibrant charm of Kirkwood Gardens. The Science Center is Certified Sensory Inclusive by KultureCity. The 3/4 mile live animal exhibit trail features coyote, fisher, red fox, bobcat, black bear, mountain lion, river otters, white-tailed deer, various owls and raptors, and more. Plan at least two and a half hours to walk the animal exhibit trail, which meanders through open meadows, mature forests, and marsh boardwalks on a packed gravel path. Trail rates for 2025 are $28 for adults; $26 for seniors (age 65+); $22 for youth (ages 3-15); free for children 2 and under and Science Center members. Join the caterpillar count! This summer we are monitoring for monarch caterpillars as part of the national citizen science initiative the Monarch Larva Monitoring Project. We will meet every Monday morning through the end of August to count all the monarch caterpillars and eggs we can find in our established plot featuring abundant milkweed at the Pemi Oxbow Preserve. Our data will help scientists learn about the status of monarchs across the country. Join us every week or come when you can – either way, we’d love your help! All ages are welcome. Youth must be accompanied by an adult. Squam Lakes Conservation Society holds the conservation easement on the 250 acre Pemi Oxbow Preserve, which is owned by the town of Holderness and open to the public.

This summer camp at the Children’s Museum of New Hampshire in Dover is designed as an advanced course for kids (ages 10–12+) who have taken the beginner camp or who have experience with 3D printers. Campers will have an opportunity to learn how to break down objects into their basic shapes and how complex 3D objects are printed from the ground up. Kids will bring home a complex 3D printed object that they design themselves, as well as try hands-on art and science activities to further explore 3D objects, melting, and matter. Each day starts with playtime in the award-winning museum exhibits. Weather permitting, campers will enjoy outdoor playtime in the park. Campers are asked to pack a water bottle and snack. Cost: $170 (Members $155). Pre-registration and pre-payment required. Limited to 12 children. Please note, this camp is for children ages 10–12. A fun way to connect kids with agriculture, the outdoors, and healthier eating   Have fun with your children or grandchildren with our "Moulton Farm's Little Sprouts" program this summer!   Children ages 5 to 9, accompanied by a parent or grandparent, and with a guide from our Moulton Farm team, explore what's happening at the farm, learn how vegetables grow, and then get hands-on experience gardening and growing food.   Every week is different because what is happening at the farm changes so quickly during the season.     Children can attend one session, several sessions, or all seven sessions in a series. This year, two different series are offered. One series is on Tuesdays, and the other is on Wednesdays. Both series cover similar content and are held regardless of the weather. This summer camp at the Children’s Museum of New Hampshire in Dover is designed as an advanced course for kids (ages 10–12+) who have taken the beginner camp or who have experience with 3D printers. Campers will have an opportunity to learn how to break down objects into their basic shapes and how complex 3D objects are printed from the ground up. Kids will bring home a complex 3D printed object that they design themselves, as well as try hands-on art and science activities to further explore 3D objects, melting, and matter. Each day starts with playtime in the award-winning museum exhibits. Weather permitting, campers will enjoy outdoor playtime in the park. Campers are asked to pack a water bottle and snack. The Science Center is Certified Sensory Inclusive by KultureCity. The 3/4 mile live animal exhibit trail features coyote, fisher, red fox, bobcat, black bear, mountain lion, river otters, white-tailed deer, various owls and raptors, and more. This AARP Driver Safety program can help you plan sensitive, successful conversations concerning an elder's safe driving and then, if necessary, for steps to be taken for them to limit or retire from driving. Surveys show that more than half of older drivers whose family asked them to retire from driving followed those suggestions. Children can participate in a craft and enjoy a snack during the  Kick Off Reception! 15TH ANNUAL STORYWALK® AND MONARCH CITIZEN SCIENCE PROJECT KICK OFF IN HOLDERNESS   Holderness, NH — The 15th annual StoryWalk®, a cherished collaboration between Squam Lakes Natural Science Center, Holderness Recreation Department, and Holderness Free Library, with support from Meredith Village Savings Bank, is set to begin soon. The kickoff event will take place on June 27 at 10:00 a.m. at the Curry Place Gazebo, located behind the Holderness Post Office.   This year’s featured story is Mr. McGinty’s Monarchs by Linda Vander Heyden, inviting families to enjoy reading and nature while walking the StoryWalk® path.   In conjunction with StoryWalk®, the Science Center, supported by Squam Lakes Conservation Society, will launch a community citizen science project to monitor monarch butterfly larvae on milkweed. Starting June 30, interested participants are invited to join weekly monitoring sessions every Monday at 9:30 a.m. at the Pemi-Oxbow Preserve that straddles Holderness, Plymouth & Ashland.   By tracking the presence of monarch eggs and larvae, volunteers will contribute valuable data to the Monarch Larva Monitoring Project, a nationwide initiative to better understand monarch breeding, distribution, and population health. Community involvement is vital to these efforts, helping scientists and conservationists protect monarchs and their habitats for future generations.   Volunteers of all ages are welcome! Meet in the back left corner of the Plymouth State University Ice Arena parking lot at 9:30 on Monday mornings through the end of August. We will begin at 10 AM and return around 1 PM.  This hike is open to all. Children must be accompanied by an adult. This route is an easy difficulty. Please bring appropriate gear for hiking, including footwear and clothing for the weather conditions. Participants should bring a lunch and enough water for a ~2 hour hike. Depending on weather, participants can swim on the beaches so bring swimsuits and towels if interested. Join us at the League of NH Craftsmen – Meredith Fine Craft Gallery on Saturday, August 23rd, 2025 from 10:30 am – 4:30 pm for a Silver Ring with a Bezel Class with juried artist Joy Raskin. In this one day workshop, students will make a silver ring band out of wire or sheet metal, and then they will make a bezel to set a cabochon stone. The bezel will then be soldered to the ring, a cabochon stone will be set, and the finished ring will be polished and ready for you to wear and enjoy. Materials are not required, but students can bring in a favorite stone or any silver they may have. The instructor will supply silver wire and sheet, plus cabochon stones of assorted sizes for students to purchase. The estimated cost of materials ranges from $10 to $50, depending on the cost of materials you use. Tuition is $75.00 per student. Materials fee is between $10-$50 depending on the stones and amount of silver the student uses. The materials fee will be paid cash or check to the instructor on the day of class. Space is limited and pre-registration is required. Those who wish to take the class MUST sign up by Wednesday, August 20th. Join the caterpillar count! This summer we are monitoring for monarch caterpillars as part of the national citizen science initiative the Monarch Larva Monitoring Project. We will meet every Monday morning through the end of August to count all the monarch caterpillars and eggs we can find in our established plot featuring abundant milkweed at the Pemi Oxbow Preserve. Our data will help scientists learn about the status of monarchs across the country. Join us every week or come when you can – either way, we’d love your help! All ages are welcome. Youth must be accompanied by an adult. Squam Lakes Conservation Society holds the conservation easement on the 250 acre Pemi Oxbow Preserve, which is owned by the town of Holderness and open to the public.

Thursday, May 1, 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (last trail admission at 3:30 p.m.) Holderness, NH – Squam Lakes Natural Science Center celebrates the start of the 2025 public trail season on opening day, Thursday, May 1. Regular hours are 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (last trail admission at 3:30 p.m.) For nearly 60 years, Squam Lakes Natural Science Center has been a favorite New England family destination, bringing joy, connection, wonder, and discovery to generations of visitors through live animal exhibits, natural science education programs, guided Squam Lake Cruises and the vibrant charm of Kirkwood Gardens. The Science Center is Certified Sensory Inclusive by KultureCity. The 3/4 mile live animal exhibit trail features coyote, fisher, red fox, bobcat, black bear, mountain lion, river otters, white-tailed deer, various owls and raptors, and more. Plan at least two and a half hours to walk the animal exhibit trail, which meanders through open meadows, mature forests, and marsh boardwalks on a packed gravel path. Trail rates for 2025 are $28 for adults; $26 for seniors (age 65+); $22 for youth (ages 3-15); free for children 2 and under and Science Center members. Learn about the natural history of Squam Lake, look for majestic Bald Eagles, and listen for the haunting call of Common Loons. Hear about the people who have lived on its rocky shores surrounded by scenic mountains for over 5,000 years. Cruise on this pristine lake where nature reigns. All Squam Lake Cruises are 90 minutes in length on canopied pontoon boats. Binoculars are available for viewing or bring your own. Cruises depart on Route 113 across from the Science Center. Squam Lake Cruises are not recommended for children under age 5. Advance reservations required by purchasing tickets at nhnature.org. Join us at the League of NH Craftsmen – Meredith Fine Craft Gallery on Wednesday, August 27th, 2025 from 2 pm – 4 pm for a Felted Birch Landscape class with juried artist Hannah Gage. In this beginner-friendly class, fiber artist Hannah Gage will guide students through the process of creating a small (approximately 4x6 inch), simple, birch tree scene using needle felting techniques. The focus will be on layering wool to create clean lines and natural texture, capturing the distinctive look of birch trunks and forest elements. All materials, including wool and felting tools, will be provided for use during the workshop. Students will complete a finished felted piece that can be framed later. No prior experience is necessary—just an interest in learning a new fiber art technique. Students should bring water, and a snack if desired. Tuition is $40 per student, with a $25 materials fee paid cash or check to the instructor on the day of class. Space is limited and pre-registration is required. Those who wish to take the class MUST sign up by Sunday, August 24th. He was born in Seattle and raised in the Olympia area.
