Children can participate in a craft and enjoy a snack during the  Kick Off Reception! 15TH ANNUAL STORYWALK® AND MONARCH CITIZEN SCIENCE PROJECT KICK OFF IN HOLDERNESS   Holderness, NH — The 15th annual StoryWalk®, a cherished collaboration between Squam Lakes Natural Science Center, Holderness Recreation Department, and Holderness Free Library, with support from Meredith Village Savings Bank, is set to begin soon. The kickoff event will take place on June 27 at 10:00 a.m. at the Curry Place Gazebo, located behind the Holderness Post Office.   This year’s featured story is Mr. McGinty’s Monarchs by Linda Vander Heyden, inviting families to enjoy reading and nature while walking the StoryWalk® path.   In conjunction with StoryWalk®, the Science Center, supported by Squam Lakes Conservation Society, will launch a community citizen science project to monitor monarch butterfly larvae on milkweed. Starting June 30, interested participants are invited to join weekly monitoring sessions every Monday at 9:30 a.m. at the Pemi-Oxbow Preserve that straddles Holderness, Plymouth & Ashland.   By tracking the presence of monarch eggs and larvae, volunteers will contribute valuable data to the Monarch Larva Monitoring Project, a nationwide initiative to better understand monarch breeding, distribution, and population health. Community involvement is vital to these efforts, helping scientists and conservationists protect monarchs and their habitats for future generations.   Volunteers of all ages are welcome! Meet in the back left corner of the Plymouth State University Ice Arena parking lot at 9:30 on Monday mornings through the end of August. Our biggest concert is at Hesky Park in Meredith on July 4th at 7pm, setting the stage for the July 4th Fireworks. This has been an annual collaboration with the Meredith Rec. Department and the New Horizons Band. The Rain date is set for July 5th. The New Horizons Band will then travel to Sanbornton and perform on Saturday, July 12th at 9:30 am for their annual Old Home Day celebrating Sanbornton. July 22nd at 6:30 pm, The Putnam Fund will host the New Horizons Band in a Concert at the Belknap Mill Rotary. At the end of the season, the Band will bring their concert to the Tilton Veterans Home, the Belknap Nursing Home and the St. Francis Rehab. Center. Enjoy an evening of live music. A fun way to connect kids with agriculture, the outdoors, and healthier eating   Have fun with your children or grandchildren with our "Moulton Farm's Little Sprouts" program this summer!   Children ages 5 to 9, accompanied by a parent or grandparent, and with a guide from our Moulton Farm team, explore what's happening at the farm, learn how vegetables grow, and then get hands-on experience gardening and growing food.   Every week is different because what is happening at the farm changes so quickly during the season.     Children can attend one session, several sessions, or all seven sessions in a series. This year, two different series are offered. One series is on Tuesdays, and the other is on Wednesdays. Both series cover similar content and are held regardless of the weather. Are you curious about North America’s largest rodent species? Beavers live all around us and fundamentally shape our wetland ecosystems. Come join us at the Squam Lakes Association on Tuesday, July 8th, from 10am- 12pm, for a discussion about beavers and then a short kayak trip through Piper’s cove to observe the beaver dam. Participants will learn about how and why beavers make their dams and how these dams create important ecological niches for other wetland species. We will also discuss human/beaver conflicts and successes, including historic fur trapping and how ecologists are using beavers to restore degraded habitat.  Participants should meet in the SLA building at 9:45 to fill out liability forms and then gather in the great room to talk about the basics of beavers. Next, we will go down to the docks and launch kayaks into Piper’s Cove, where we will go explore our own resident beaver dam and take a closer look at how they are constructed. This will be an about 0.5 mile round trip, but we will take our time and meander at the beaver dam, so it will be a very leisurely paddle. SLA will provide all boats, paddles and life vests. SLA members often spot these beavers in the cove, so hopefully we might see one while we are boating in! Participants should bring plenty of water, as well as snacks, sunscreen and bug spray. Regular hours are 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (last trail admission at 3:30 p.m.) For nearly 60 years, Squam Lakes Natural Science Center has been a favorite New England family destination, bringing joy, connection, wonder, and discovery to generations of visitors through live animal exhibits, natural science education programs, guided Squam Lake Cruises and the vibrant charm of Kirkwood Gardens. The Science Center is Certified Sensory Inclusive by KultureCity. The 3/4 mile live animal exhibit trail features coyote, fisher, red fox, bobcat, black bear, mountain lion, river otters, white-tailed deer, various owls and raptors, and more. Plan at least two and a half hours to walk the animal exhibit trail, which meanders through open meadows, mature forests, and marsh boardwalks on a packed gravel path. Trail rates for 2025 are $28 for adults; $26 for seniors (age 65+); $22 for youth (ages 3-15); free for children 2 and under and Science Center members. The High Kings are Finbarr Clancy, Darren Holden, Brian Dunphy and newest member Paul O’ Brien. The High Kings formed in June 2007 when Brian, Darren, Finbarr and former member Martin Furey were asked to join a brand-new Irish ballad group by David Kavanagh after he had noticed a gap in the market for a band specialising in traditional Irish music. It didn’t take long during their first studio rehearsal for them to realise that the way their individual voices blended together meant that they were onto something special. The High Kings play 13 instruments between them, creating the unique sound and atmosphere that they still showcase to this day. This was confirmed when their self-titled debut album reached number 2 on the world Billboard Music chart. In March 2009 The High Kings played 5 consecutive sold out shows to a packed audience in Dublin’s Olympia Theatre. Children can participate in a craft and enjoy a snack during the  Kick Off Reception! 15TH ANNUAL STORYWALK® AND MONARCH CITIZEN SCIENCE PROJECT KICK OFF IN HOLDERNESS   Holderness, NH — The 15th annual StoryWalk®, a cherished collaboration between Squam Lakes Natural Science Center, Holderness Recreation Department, and Holderness Free Library, with support from Meredith Village Savings Bank, is set to begin soon. The kickoff event will take place on June 27 at 10:00 a.m. at the Curry Place Gazebo, located behind the Holderness Post Office.   This year’s featured story is Mr. McGinty’s Monarchs by Linda Vander Heyden, inviting families to enjoy reading and nature while walking the StoryWalk® path.   In conjunction with StoryWalk®, the Science Center, supported by Squam Lakes Conservation Society, will launch a community citizen science project to monitor monarch butterfly larvae on milkweed. Starting June 30, interested participants are invited to join weekly monitoring sessions every Monday at 9:30 a.m. at the Pemi-Oxbow Preserve that straddles Holderness, Plymouth & Ashland.   By tracking the presence of monarch eggs and larvae, volunteers will contribute valuable data to the Monarch Larva Monitoring Project, a nationwide initiative to better understand monarch breeding, distribution, and population health. Community involvement is vital to these efforts, helping scientists and conservationists protect monarchs and their habitats for future generations.   Volunteers of all ages are welcome! Meet in the back left corner of the Plymouth State University Ice Arena parking lot at 9:30 on Monday mornings through the end of August. Regular hours are 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (last trail admission at 3:30 p.m.) For nearly 60 years, Squam Lakes Natural Science Center has been a favorite New England family destination, bringing joy, connection, wonder, and discovery to generations of visitors through live animal exhibits, natural science education programs, guided Squam Lake Cruises and the vibrant charm of Kirkwood Gardens. The Science Center is Certified Sensory Inclusive by KultureCity. The 3/4 mile live animal exhibit trail features coyote, fisher, red fox, bobcat, black bear, mountain lion, river otters, white-tailed deer, various owls and raptors, and more. Plan at least two and a half hours to walk the animal exhibit trail, which meanders through open meadows, mature forests, and marsh boardwalks on a packed gravel path. Join us at the League of NH Craftsmen – Meredith Fine Craft Gallery on Sunday, July 13th 2025 from 9 am until 4 pm for a Feather Wool Tree Workshop with juried artist Jean Reed. These unique and whimsical trees are made from felted wool, wrapped over wire stems, and enhanced with winter berries. Students will be using 100% felted wool and will have a choice of colors to use. Trees made in class will be 18? tall, including a tree stand given with the kit. Embellishments such as lighting and ornaments will also be available. Felted trees aren’t just for Christmas or the winter holidays – they can also be made in colors that allow them to be a spring, summer or fall tree, or a unique gift! Students will need: Sharp fabric scissors (small ones, such as embroidery scissors are great), a tape measure, and a pencil. Students will also need to bring a lunch. Tuition is $130 per student. All materials are included in the cost. Space is limited and pre-registration is required. Those who wish to attend MUST do so by Thursday, July 10th. Join the Squam Lakes Association on Sunday, July 13, from 10am – 2pm, and learn how to identify aquatic invasive species. The Weed Watchers volunteer program enables anyone to help protect our lakes against the spread of invasive species by becoming an extra pair of eyes on the lake to spot and report potential invasions. After this training, you will be able to look for invasive species like variable milfoil on your own and know how to report sightings on Squam as an official Weed Watcher! We'll begin by meeting in the great room for a presentation, and then we'll kayak on Squam to practice. Volunteers should bring plenty of water, snacks, sunscreen, and appropriate clothing, as we will be out on the water for a few hours. The SLA will provide kayaks, life vests and aquascopes. Trained Weed Watchers will also have the opportunity to take out free kayak and canoe rentals to survey around the lake. Variable milfoil was first identified in Squam Lake in 2000. Our efforts hand-pulling and using a Diver Assisted Suction Harvester for removal have proven successful; there has not been a new infestation of variable milfoil identified on the Squam Lakes since 2007. Our Weed Watcher network is crucial for finding invasive blooms so we can stop the spread in its tracks. The Squam Lakes Association is dedicated to conserving for public benefit the natural beauty, peaceful character and resources of the watershed. In collaboration with local and state partners the SLA promotes the protection, careful use and shared enjoyment of the lakes, mountains, forests, open spaces and wildlife of the Squam Lakes Region.

Learn about the natural history of Squam Lake, look for majestic Bald Eagles, and listen for the haunting call of Common Loons. Hear about the people who have lived on its rocky shores surrounded by scenic mountains for over 5,000 years. Cruise on this pristine lake where nature reigns. All Squam Lake Cruises are 90 minutes in length on canopied pontoon boats. Binoculars are available for viewing or bring your own. Cruises depart on Route 113 across from the Science Center. Squam Lake Cruises are not recommended for children under age 5. Advance reservations required by purchasing tickets at nhnature.org.
